After arriving at the guild, I went to Reina’s counter as I had the day before.

“You look like a proper adventurer today. But that’s more equipment than you could have bought with yesterday’s earnings. Where did it come from?”

“Amanda introduced me to Harold’s shop.”Full novel: Starting an Adventure at Age 10 — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“Oh! Hee hee… I see. Amanda must expect great things from you too. You truly are remarkable.”

Reina looked startled for an instant, then smiled. Once again, her changing expression caused a commotion throughout the guildhall.

“Reina, is this the novice adventurer I’ve been hearing about?”

A man approached us. He was large, with red hair that he’d grown somewhat long and tied behind his head. His eyes were the same red as his hair, and an aura of strength surrounded him.

“Master, did you come downstairs solely to confirm that?”

“Of course. I had to see the adventurer you acknowledged after all this time.”

The man Reina called Master stared intently at me.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Erik. And you are…?”

“Ah, sorry. Almost everyone in the capital knows me, so I forget to introduce myself. I’m Ryan, the guild master of the capital’s Adventurers’ Guild.”

“T-The guild master? I’m sorry!”

I hurriedly apologized, but Ryan laughed heartily.

“You don’t need to apologize for asking my name! More importantly, how did you win Reina’s approval? She’s good at her job but terrible with people. She’s so selective that almost no adventurers use her counter.”

He lowered his voice near the end so only I would hear—or so he thought. Reina heard him perfectly, and while Ryan couldn’t see her behind him, her expression was terrifying.

“Master, you were bold enough to insult me within earshot. In that case, I’ll inform your wife that you’ve been secretly drinking despite her prohibition.”

“W-Wait! You can’t tell her that!”

Ryan shouted pathetically, but Reina ignored him. Other staff members soon arrived and escorted him back upstairs.

“Is that all right? He’s the guild master, isn’t he?”

“He is, but he insulted me first. Besides, his wife asked me to keep an eye on him, so this is perfectly appropriate.”

Apparently, Ryan had caused trouble while drunk in the past. His wife felt completely forbidding alcohol would be cruel, so they’d agreed he could drink at home. He’d broken that promise by drinking at a tavern.

“Oh…”

“Erik, you’ll eventually learn to drink too, but never overdo it.”

I nodded, then asked to see the day’s requests.

Since I was wearing equipment, Reina had prepared several outside-city jobs as well.

“Wait, didn’t I accept this one yesterday?”

Among the papers was another domestic-help request from Marina. It was the same type of request I’d accepted the day before.

“After you left, she continued experimenting, got the proportions wrong, and made a terrible mess of the first floor. The client specifically asked for you if possible.”

“Understood. I’ll take care of that before hunting monsters.”

“Are you sure? Didn’t you wear your equipment because you planned to leave the city today?”

“I did, but I’d feel uncomfortable ignoring someone who treated me well. I’ll handle her request first, then go outside this afternoon.”

I accepted the domestic-help request and followed the same route as the previous day to Marina’s house.

“Erik! Thank you for coming—and I’m sorry!”

“It’s fine. I accepted the request for the reward too.”

When I rang the bell, Marina burst out of the building. Her robe was dirtier than yesterday, making it obvious that an experiment really had failed.

Inside, I found the living room and workroom in a terrible state.

“I’m sorry. You made everything so clean yesterday…”

“That’s all right. More importantly, the workroom is very dirty as well. Should I clean that today too?”

“Yes, please. There are dangerous items inside, so I’ll help you clean that room.”

“Understood. I’ll begin with the living room. While I do that, could you remove only the dangerous items from the workroom?”

“Of course!”

Marina began immediately. I went to the storage room, collected the cleaning tools I’d used yesterday, and started my work.

Only the living room and workroom were dirty this time, so I expected to finish before noon.

Although the mess came from a failed experiment, it wasn’t especially difficult to wipe away. Even stubborn stains weren’t a problem because Marina’s house contained numerous cleaning agents. Using them, I removed the stains and gradually restored the room.

“Marina, the living room is finished.”

“Already? It hasn’t even been an hour!”

She hurried out to inspect it. The furniture had been stained as well, but I’d wiped it clean, leaving the room even tidier than it was the previous day.

“Incredible. Perhaps I should request your cleaning services every week…”

“Every week? A house can’t become this dirty in such a short time.”

“Erik, you underestimate me. I’m exceptionally talented at making messes!”

For some reason, Marina declared that with immense confidence.
