Afterward, we began cleaning the workroom.
Marina had already removed the dangerous objects while I worked in the living room, so I could start immediately.
Since this was the one place I hadn’t cleaned the previous day, it looked as though it would take longer than the living room. However, Marina felt responsible for causing the mess and was also curious, so she joined me.
“…Erik, do you have a cleaning-related skill? Your movements are so smooth and quick. You’ve cleaned about twice as much as I have.”
“No. I only possess one special skill, so I don’t have anything like that.”
“Really? Simply possessing a special skill is impressive. Are you sure you should tell people so casually?”
“My special skill is unknown and difficult to understand, so I don’t know whether it’s something I should hide.”
That was the honest truth. I’d asked about it during the ceremony, but no one knew the details. I wanted to investigate it in the capital, but visiting the library cost money I couldn’t yet spare.
“I see. What’s the skill called?”
“[Fixed EXP].”
“Fixed experience…? Judging by the name, perhaps the amount of experience needed to level up is fixed.”
“I don’t know. I’m planning to leave the city today, so I hope to test it.”
One reason I wanted to go outside was to investigate [Fixed EXP].
We continued cleaning while we talked. The workroom wasn’t large, but the quantity of objects made organizing it time-consuming. Even so, we finished in about two hours, leaving me plenty of time to go outside before noon.
“Erik, thank you so much! Without you, I would’ve been forced to live in that terrible mess!”
“Marina, this is too much money!”
The request offered one silver coin, yet Marina tried to give me four more as an additional reward.
“It’s fine. I may be terrible at cleaning, but I earn plenty as an alchemist. I’m good at business and have savings!”
“Then why not live somewhere better or hire a servant?”
“…I hired someone to clean for me before. But I made messes so quickly that it broke her spirit and she quit.”
Marina’s mood darkened as she answered.
“What about you, Erik? I’ll pay you properly. Would you like to work as my servant?”
“That’s a very attractive offer, but I want to succeed as an adventurer, so I must decline. I don’t mind coming occasionally as a request, though. If you’re ever in trouble, submit another one and I’ll clean for you.”
“Oh! I’m going to hold you to that promise! If you break it, your big sister will be terribly sad and cry!”
“I-I promise! So please back away!”
Marina’s face crept closer and closer while she spoke, and I turned my head aside as I shouted.
“Hee hee. You really are a boy, Erik.”
“Don’t tease me! I’m leaving!”
“I’ll probably submit another request next week, so I’m counting on you!”
She called that after me as I left.
I returned to the Adventurers’ Guild, where Reina processed the completed request.
“You received another additional reward.”
“Yes. She said it was because I did such good work. I only cleaned, though. Is it really all right to accept this much?”
“I think so. Building good relationships with clients is part of an adventurer’s work. Some adventurers cultivate regular clients and receive recurring requests from them.”
“Would that person still count as an adventurer?”
Reina smiled at my question.
“There are many ways to work as an adventurer. As you continue, you’ll gradually understand.”
“Perhaps I will.”
Before I left the city, Reina gave me several warnings. Monsters around the capital had recently become more active and were ranging beyond their normal territories, so I needed to remain vigilant.
I planned to visit a forest west of the capital. Reina explained which monsters lived there and how to deal with them before I left the guild.
“…So this will be today’s workplace.”
After leaving the capital, I walked for several minutes and reached the western forest. Low-level monsters such as goblins and slimes lived there.
“The gates close about an hour after the first evening bell.”
I’d asked beforehand when the capital’s gates closed. They shut around seven in the evening, so I decided to prepare to return as soon as the six-o’clock bell sounded.
With that in mind, I entered the forest.
“This matches the medicinal herb in the book.”
My first task was gathering herbs for my request. I decided to complete that before experimenting with my special skill.
