Nicole and Ryder are waiting for us when we arrive.

I can see the guilt on Ryder’s face.

He thinks he let me down.

He didn’t.

“Take her to a bedroom and I’ll examine her there,” Nicole orders.

Ryder follows us.

“Ivy, what can I do to help?” Ryder asks.

I look at Theodore and then back to Ryder.

I don’t feel safe in this house.

“Stay near. After Nicole finishes we need to talk — privately.”

Theodore carries me into the room and sets me on the bed.

He looks at me concerned and leaves reluctantly.

“I’ll check on you later, Ivy.”

“What’s going on, Ivy? Someone really has it out for you,” Nicole says.

“How many times are they going to try and kill you? I’m thankful they failed — again!”

She gives me a hug.

“I think we both know it’s Tiffany.” Then I think a bit.

“What’s a bit crazy is, I was going to sign the divorce papers.

You would think she’d want me to finish so Theodore can be free of me and marry her.

But who ever expects Tiffany to act rationally.”

“The police say both Tiffany and Jonathan have alibis.

But we both know they can hire people to do their dirty work,” Nicole says as she takes a sample of my blood.

She takes out her testing kit.

She puts drops of my blood into each of the small tubes.

“It’s what I thought,” Nicole says.

“Phenobarbital.

Your wolf will help you recover completely from any complications so I you’ll be fine.”

“I can’t stay here.

I need to get away from these people,” I say.

“Ryder can stay in the room with you, Tiffany won’t be able to get at you. I just think it’s best to stay here for now. After you feel better ,you can move,” Nicole says.

She checks her watch.

“I’ve got to go.

I’ll check you in the evening.”

“Thanks, Nicole,” I say.

“Please tell Ryder to come in.”

Ryder comes and sits next to me.

“It’s not safe for you here, Ivy.

There are too many in Silver Claw who would love to see you dead.

We need to go home.”

“I’ll not be scared off by the likes of Tiffany and Jonathan.

We need to finish our business here before we go home.”

I tell Ryder he should not leave the room.

I’ll stay in this house only until I feel good enough to move then we’ll go elsewhere.

Once we finish the business negotiations, we’ll go home.

“Okay that sounds good,” Ryder says.

“A strange thing happened in the middle of all of this that I keep thinking about.

I saw Montague.

He was passing by the lawyer’s office just after you went in, before the shit hit the fan.”

“Not as strange as you might think, though.

I know Montague has business interests all over the country.

It could have been coincidence,” I say.

“Yes, maybe. Still it made me curious,” Ryder says.

“Do you think he and Dylan know about the deal we’re making with Silver Claw?”

“They could. Theodore basically announced it at the reception. Anyone in attendance could have passed the news one. My wolf sense tells me Montague is here on Dylan’s instructions to mess up our negotiations,” Ryder says.

“I don’t think that’s possible but we should not take any chances. As soon as I’m better we’re finishing this deal!”

Just then we hear noise outside the door.

Then the door bursts open.

It’s Tiffany followed by Theodore.

“Why are you in my home you lying bitch?!” Tiffany shouts wildly.

She is completely unhinged.

“You should know. Isn’t it you sent people to kidnap me and throw me in the sea? You’ve tried to kill me before and now you’ve tried again. Still I’m alive. The score: Ivy 2, Tiffany 0.” I laugh.

“I want this evil bitch out of my house — now!”

It’s clear Theodore is not pleased with Tiffany ordering him around, despite that he remains calm.

“Ivy will be staying here until she recovers.”

“No! I can’t live in the same house as Ivy! I won’t!” Tiffany screams at Theodore.

“I think you’re right,” Theodore says.

“You can’t live in the same house as Ivy.

It’s best you move home to your parents until Ivy leaves.”

“What?!

I’m the Luna of Silver Claw!

I will not be tossed aside like some rag!”

“A small correction,” I say, just to annoy her that little bit more.

“You were filling in for me. So since I’m back, I’m officially the Luna. You’re basically a side chick to the Alpha and really shouldn’t be living here in any case.”

She lunges for me and Ryder grabs her, lifts her off her feet, and drops her in the hallway.

He closes the door with her on the other side.

“You need to control your woman,” I say to Theodore.

He’s about to reply.

Then I can see him change his mind.

“You rest, Ivy.

I’ll sort Tiffany out.

Both her and Jonathan will be gone in the next hour.

She’ll not trouble you again.”

“She better not,” Ryder says.

“I’ll not be so kind on her second attempt…or is it the third?”

I can see Ryder has had enough of Tiffany and his patience is also wearing thin when it comes to the Alpha.

To stop Theodore from responding to Ryder in an insulting way which I can see is about to happen I cut in.

“Theodore, thanks again for saving my life. And for this bed for me to recover. Nicole has assured me that I’ll be better in a day or so. Then we’ll be out of your hair…and your house.”

Theodore’s face softens.

“There’s no rush. This is the Luna’s home. Everyone is happy to have you back.”

I think: obviously not everyone.

Ryder looks at me wanting me to correct Theodore’s words.

I say nothing more.

For today I’ll leave those words as they are.

Theodore has been kind to me, I can allow him this kindness too.
