The Golden Retriever leaped, its sharp claws tearing through a monster’s temple.

It scooped out a Demon Core, along with a glob of brains, and shoved it into its mouth.

It even smacked its lips from time to time, clearly satisfied with the Demon Core it had devoured.Full novel: Sword and Sanctuary — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Its expression grew more focused as it stared intently at the group of monsters fighting the mutant dogs.

The horde of monsters and the swift mutant dogs were locked in a chaotic battle, their frenzied roars echoing in a heart-pounding cacophony.

Feng Moxi’s heart stirred.

‘It’s obvious.

After devouring Zhang Tao’s flesh during the day, this Golden Retriever has already leveled up.

It’s sentient now, hunting for Demon Cores in pursuit of greater power.’

‘If this continues, it will only get stronger, and I’m afraid none of us will make it out alive.’

She looked at Chaoyang and said nonchalantly, “I have a feeling there’s something strange about all this commotion outside.

Could there be some kind of treasure involved?”

Chaoyang, ever the daring one, could no longer contain his curiosity.

“So, should we go take a look?”

The four bodyguards moved to the doorway without needing to be told why.

Sima Yue had already drawn his Tang Blade.

It was clear they all wanted to see what was happening.

Wan Yong glanced at the middle-aged woman and the young boy, then said in a low voice, “He Ping, you stay.

The rest of us will go take a look.” He Ping’s combat strength was decent, and he was both brave and clever.

No one in their group wanted anything to happen to him.

“Big Brother!”

“My mind is made up.

Be careful.” His tone was surprisingly firm, not wavering until He Ping nodded.

Luo Yunxi was also eager to go, but this time, Feng Moxi shook her head.

“Yunxi, you’re staying too.”

‘In the middle of a chaotic night battle, I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to protect her, and she’d get hurt.

Besides, her combat power is nowhere near enough.’

The group got ready.

Chaoyang pulled open the back door, and they slipped around to the side of the house.

They focused their eyes and saw the mutant dogs and monsters locked in a ferocious battle at the end of the street.

Of the dozen or so mutant dogs, only five or six remained, while a large circle of monsters lay dead on the ground.

Black blood flowed everywhere, but they were still tearing at each other.

The moment Feng Moxi and the others revealed themselves, the mutant Golden Retriever sensed them.

With a shake of its golden fur, the remaining five or six mutant dogs immediately stopped fighting.

They all bared their teeth and charged.

The pack of monsters also stopped their infighting.

Baring their fangs and claws, they began to lumber over, looking as if they intended to surround the newcomers.

Feng Moxi gripped her iron rod and met the charge of a slightly larger mutant dog.

Her Divine Sense remained locked onto the Golden Retriever.

She tried to use her Divine Sense to influence it, only to find she could no longer control its consciousness in the slightest.

The four bodyguards engaged the remaining mutant dogs, fighting as they retreated.

They formed a line, gathering at the small bridge, presenting a formidable front as if one man was holding a pass against ten thousand.

Although Wan Yong and his group were also fighting monsters, they stayed hidden at the side of the house, not exposing themselves too much.

As a result, only a limited number of monsters attacked them, and they were safe for the moment.

Meanwhile, Chaoyang and Sima Yue stood with their Tang Blades at the ready, positioned where the bridge met the house.

They watched the Golden Retriever with complete concentration, fearing its every move.

The Golden Retriever’s fur stood on end.

Its bloodshot eyes, like bronze bells, stared so intently at Feng Moxi that her scalp began to tingle.

“AWOOO!” Suddenly, the Golden Retriever howled.

It arched its back and shot forward, its four legs moving like a meteor.

With a mouth full of sharp, stinking, drool-covered teeth, it lunged straight for Feng Moxi.

Chaoyang and Sima Yue immediately swung their blades to intercept it.

The two moved as if they had cooperated a thousand times before.

One on the left, one on the right, one defending, one attacking.

Their two Tang Blades wove a seamless defense, somehow managing to block the advanced Golden Retriever.

No matter how the Golden Retriever charged and dodged, it remained entangled within their range.

Feng Moxi smiled faintly.

‘So this is what they mean by “soldiers against soldiers, generals against generals.” These two are no ordinary people.

Their fight with the Golden-haired Chief Instructor is truly something to watch.’

She brandished her iron rod with her right hand while forming a seal with her left.

A stream of Sword Qi shot from her hand, striking the head of the mutant dog she was fighting.

The mutant dog whimpered twice and collapsed, motionless.

“Huh!” A soft exclamation from Little Shadow echoed in her Sea of Consciousness.

“This dog is a mutant, too.

The energy from its Demon Core is a little stronger.” Little Shadow’s voice seemed to drift in from a great distance.

Feng Moxi nodded to herself.

She knew that later in the Apocalypse, not only mutant dogs, but even mutant fish and shrimp would have Demon Cores of varying grades in their heads.

The four bodyguards were also quick and efficient.

This time, they didn’t use their guns, silently fighting with their Tang Blades instead.

They were locked in a desperate struggle with the mutant dogs.

Although the Golden Retriever kept barking out “AWOO” commands, its underlings couldn’t find an opening to break through and disengage.

Due to the chaos of the fight, Chaoyang and the others gradually moved toward the center of the street.

On Wan Yong’s side, more and more monsters were gathering, beginning to surround them.

Their fight became difficult, but thankfully, they were pinned in a side alley and hadn’t suffered any casualties yet.

Feng Moxi saw that while Chaoyang and Sima Yue could block the Golden Retriever’s frantic attacks, they couldn’t defeat it.

She sighed, hefted her iron rod, and joined the fray.

The three of them formed a triangle, swinging their weapons to pin the lightning-fast Golden Retriever in the center.

“ROAR!” the Golden Retriever bellowed, swiping a massive paw at Feng Moxi’s face.

To its surprise, not only was Feng Moxi incredibly strong, but she was also exceptionally quick at dodging.

The Golden Retriever seemed to develop a grudge against Feng Moxi, targeting her specifically.

But unlike its daytime chase of Zhang Tao, Feng Moxi in her past life had been known as the number one escape artist due to her speed.

On top of that, her movements were now exceptionally fast after her Cultivation.

Time and again, she dodged just before its claws could strike.

“AH!” Suddenly, a pained cry came from nearby.

A middle-aged man from Wan Yong’s team had his arm bitten by a monster, and a spray of dark blood flew out.

The man’s cry attracted the attacks of even more monsters.

Wan Yong’s team fell into disarray.

Immediately after, another muffled grunt was heard.

It came from a young bodyguard named Shi Jin, who had been distracted for a moment.

A mutant dog had pounced on him, biting into his shoulder blade.

Blood instantly gushed from the wound.

Shi Jin, seeing things were going badly, used all his strength to wrestle with the mutant dog.

Amid his continuous screams of pain, the mutant dog was somehow killed.

But it was clear Shi Jin wouldn’t make it either.

Chaoyang’s eyes hardened, a fierce glint flashing within them.

Wan Yong dragged the injured man and quickly fell back.

The remaining few, clearly unable to hold their ground, retreated with him.

The defensive line was instantly broken, leaving Wan Yong’s group completely exposed.

They fought as they retreated, finally casting an apologetic glance at Feng Moxi’s group before helplessly fleeing into the distance.

The monsters that couldn’t keep up with them slowly turned back, moving to surround Feng Moxi and her team instead.

This put them in even greater danger.

The Golden Retriever relentlessly pursued Feng Moxi, its furious claws swiping at her face again and again, each attack more vicious than the last.
