Part II — The Price of Protection For several long seconds…

Nothing moved.

The Bonefang Alpha stood before the nursery with its massive body lowered into a defensive stance.Full novel: The Beast Walker — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Fresh blood continued to drip from the wounds left by its battle with the rival Alpha, forming dark crimson pools beneath its paws.

Its breathing had grown heavier, each inhale carrying the faint rasp of damaged lungs.

Yet it did not retreat.

Behind it, the three cubs huddled together beneath the tangled roots that concealed the nursery chamber.

Their frightened crimson eyes never left their father.

The Hollow Antler Tyrant remained equally still.

Its towering frame seemed almost unnatural beneath the pale glow of the mana crystals.

Dark mist drifted endlessly from the empty sockets of its skull, spreading across the stone like living smoke.

Wherever the mist settled, the ancient moss covering the ruins blackened and crumbled into dust.

Even the mana itself seemed to avoid it.

Drake watched from the shadows, unable to pull his eyes away.

“…What is that thing?” The relic answered after a long silence.

Unknown.

Drake frowned.

“I know that.” Another pause.

Then— Behavior…

predatory.

“…That’s all?” All archived information unavailable.

For the first time since the relic had fused with him, Drake realized something unsettling.

The relic wasn’t all-knowing.

It had limits.

Whatever stood before the Alpha…

Had never existed within its biological archive.

— The Hollow Antler Tyrant slowly tilted its skull.

The clicking sound echoed once more.

Click…

Click…

Click…

It wasn’t a roar.

It wasn’t even a growl.

The sound reminded Drake of dry bones striking together inside an empty cave.

It carried no emotion.

No anger.

Only curiosity.

The creature took another slow step forward.

CRACK.

Ancient stone shattered beneath its weight.

The Alpha answered immediately.

Its lips curled back, revealing rows of serrated fangs.

A thunderous growl rolled throughout the colony, powerful enough to shake loose fragments of stone from the ceiling.

The cubs whimpered.

But they did not run.

Instead, the eldest instinctively nudged its younger siblings farther into the nursery while repeatedly glancing toward its father.

Drake noticed something then.

The Alpha never once looked back.

It trusted them.

It trusted the eldest cub to understand.

“…They’re communicating.” The relic replied.

Social hierarchy confirmed.

Pack intelligence exceeds previous estimates.

Drake’s thoughts drifted back to every lesson he’d learned growing up.

“Monsters act only on instinct.” “Destroy the Alpha and the pack collapses.” “Never hesitate.

Monsters know neither love nor loyalty.” Standing before him…

Every one of those teachings fell apart.

The Alpha wasn’t fighting because of territory.

It wasn’t protecting food.

It wasn’t defending dominance.

It was protecting…

Its family.

— The Hollow Antler Tyrant suddenly inhaled.

The sound resembled an ancient tree pulling in the wind.

Then it exhaled.

Black mist surged from the hollow skull.

The cloud rolled across the colony floor like a living tide, swallowing bones, broken weapons, and abandoned dens in seconds.

The Alpha immediately stepped forward.

Its massive forelimbs struck the ground.

BOOM!

The impact shattered the stone beneath its claws.

A wave of pale mana erupted outward from its body, colliding with the black mist before it could reach the nursery.

The two forces met with a violent hiss.

Darkness against light.

Corruption against instinct.

For several heartbeats…

Neither advanced.

Then the Alpha’s wounds betrayed it.

Its legs trembled.

The pale mana flickered.

The black mist slowly pushed forward.

Drake clenched his fists.

“It’s too injured…” The relic answered quietly.

Correct.

“The battle yesterday…” Combat efficiency reduced by thirty-nine percent.

Drake’s eyes widened.

Thirty-nine percent.

Even wounded this badly…

The Alpha still radiated overwhelming pressure.

What would it have been like at full strength?

— The Tyrant clicked again.

This time…

It moved.

Without warning, its enormous body vanished.

Drake’s pupils shrank.

Too fast.

His eyes barely tracked the movement before— BOOOOM!!

The entire colony shook.

The Alpha had intercepted the attack.

Its shoulder slammed against the Hollow Antler Tyrant’s chest, forcing the enormous creature backward through three ancient stone pillars.

Rock exploded across the cavern.

Dust filled the air.

The Alpha didn’t stop.

It lunged again, driving its jaws toward the Tyrant’s throat.

The Tyrant twisted unnaturally.

Its elongated arm swung downward.

CRASH!!

The claw struck the Alpha’s back with terrifying force.

Several of the pale armor plates shattered instantly.

Blood erupted across the stone.

Drake’s heart lurched.

The Alpha staggered but refused to retreat.

Instead, it bit down harder.

Its enormous jaws clamped onto one of the Tyrant’s skeletal forearms.

CRACK!

Bone splintered.

The Hollow Antler Tyrant released its first true sound.

Not pain.

Annoyance.

A deep vibration rolled from within the stag skull, causing the mana crystals throughout the cavern to flicker violently.

The Alpha used the opening.

Its hind legs drove powerfully against the ground.

With a roar that shook the ruins, it hurled both of them across the colony.

The two monsters crashed into the ancient Alpha’s throne.

Stone exploded.

The throne collapsed beneath their combined weight.

Drake remained frozen.

He had seen powerful monsters fight before.

Nothing like this.

Every collision reshaped the battlefield itself.

Centuries-old pillars shattered.

The ground split apart.

Entire dens collapsed beneath stray impacts.

The cubs cried out.

The Alpha heard them.

Even while locked in combat…

Its crimson eyes flicked toward the nursery.

Just for an instant.

That single glance cost it.

The Tyrant’s claws pierced deep into the Alpha’s shoulder.

The beast roared in agony.

Drake instinctively stepped forward.

“No—” He stopped himself.

His breathing grew ragged.

His human heart demanded he help.

The Bonefang instincts demanded the same.

But another voice whispered louder.

Reality.

He wasn’t strong enough.

Not yet.

If he joined now…

He would die.

The relic spoke.

Survival probability: 4.3%.

Drake lowered his head.

He already knew.

— The Hollow Antler Tyrant slowly withdrew its claws.

Dark blood poured from the Alpha’s shoulder.

Still…

The Bonefang refused to fall.

It staggered backward until it once again stood before the nursery.

Exactly where the battle had begun.

The Tyrant watched silently.

Then…

It looked past the Alpha.

Toward the cubs.

Everything inside Drake froze.

The Alpha noticed.

Its entire posture changed.

Until now…

It had been defending.

Now…

It became desperate.

Its growl deepened into something primal.

Something ancient.

Not the roar of an Alpha.

The cry of a parent who had realized its children were the true target all along.

Drake felt tears sting the corners of his eyes before he even understood why.

The relic remained silent.

No analysis.

No biological report.

Only silence.

Even the ancient intelligence inside him seemed to recognize what was unfolding.

The Hollow Antler Tyrant lowered its skull.

Its empty eye sockets fixed upon the nursery.

Then it took one slow step forward.

The Alpha answered with another.

The distance between them closed.

One fought because it hungered.

The other…

Because there was nothing else left worth living for.

Drake slowly rose from the shadows.

His claws trembled.

His instincts screamed at him to remain hidden.

His heart screamed louder.

He looked at the Alpha.

Then at the frightened cubs.

Then…

He remembered Luna.

The promise he had made beside her hospital bed.

“I’ll always protect you.” His fingers slowly curled into fists.

The crimson mark beneath his skin pulsed once.

The relic finally spoke.

Host emotional state unstable.

Recommendation…

A pause.

Longer than any before.

Decision belongs to the host.

Drake looked toward the battlefield.

For the first time…

The relic had not told him what was efficient.

It had not calculated survival.

It had left the choice entirely to him.

Drake took a slow breath.

Then another.

His fear remained.

So did his resolve.

He stepped out from the shadows.

The Alpha noticed him.

So did the Hollow Antler Tyrant.

For a brief heartbeat…

The entire battlefield fell silent.

A human…

Had chosen to stand beside a monster.
