Part III — A Choice Beyond Instinct The colony fell silent.
Not because the battle had ended.
Because something impossible had just happened.
A human had stepped onto the battlefield.
Drake slowly emerged from behind the shattered pillar, his eyes never leaving the Hollow Antler Tyrant.
Every instinct inside his body screamed at him to run.
His heartbeat hammered against his chest, and his legs felt heavier with every step.
He was terrified.
Not ashamed.
Not uncertain.
Terrified.
The creature standing before him was unlike anything he had ever encountered.
Even the relic—an ancient organism capable of analyzing the bloodlines of monsters—could not identify it.
That alone should have been enough reason to flee.
Yet he continued walking.
One step.
Then another.
Until he stood several meters behind the Bonefang Alpha.
The Alpha turned its head slightly.
Its crimson eyes met Drake’s once again.
There was no hostility in that gaze.
Only confusion.
Why…?
That single question seemed to echo from the beast’s eyes.
Why would something so weak willingly step onto this battlefield?
Drake smiled bitterly.
“I’ve been asking myself the same thing.” — The Hollow Antler Tyrant slowly lowered its massive skull.
Its empty eye sockets settled upon Drake.
For the first time…
It acknowledged his existence.
A clicking sound echoed from within its skull.
Click…
Click…
Click…
The sound was slow.
Almost curious.
As though examining an insect that had wandered somewhere it did not belong.
Drake felt the crushing pressure immediately.
His knees trembled.
His breathing became difficult.
The mana surrounding the Tyrant was overwhelming.
It wasn’t merely powerful.
It was ancient.
Heavy.
As if countless deaths had been compressed into a single existence.
The relic reacted instantly.
Foreign mana invading host.
Mana circulation disrupted.
Cellular degradation beginning.
Drake’s pupils shrank.
“What…?” Pain spread through his body.
His skin burned.
The cuts on his arms—already healing only moments ago—suddenly reopened.
Blood flowed freely once more.
His muscles felt weaker with every passing second.
The Hollow Antler Tyrant hadn’t attacked.
Simply standing near it…
Was enough to make living things decay.
— The relic’s voice echoed urgently.
Unique ability identified.
Designation assigned…
Rot Domain.
Drake gritted his teeth.
“So that’s why…” The black mist drifting around the Tyrant wasn’t ordinary mana.
It was corruption.
Plants withered beneath it.
Stone slowly cracked.
Even mana itself became unstable.
The Alpha was enduring this domain while already gravely wounded.
No wonder it was losing.
— The Bonefang Alpha stepped forward again.
Its massive body blocked Drake from the advancing corruption.
Instantly, the pressure surrounding him lessened.
The Alpha never looked back.
It simply stood there.
Shielding both Drake…
And its cubs.
Drake stared silently.
“…Why?” The answer arrived not from the relic…
But from the Bonefang instincts buried inside him.
Protect the young.
Protect the pack.
Even if the pack is small.
Even if the pack is weak.
Even if…
It is not your own blood.
Drake slowly lowered his eyes.
“Luna…” His sister had always done the same.
Whenever food was scarce, she insisted she had already eaten.
Whenever Drake returned injured from working dangerous jobs, she smiled and pretended not to worry.
She had always protected him in the only ways she could.
Perhaps…
Strength was never what made someone a guardian.
It was simply the willingness to stand in front of danger.
— The Hollow Antler Tyrant moved.
It disappeared.
The world exploded.
BOOOOM!!
The Alpha intercepted the attack just before the enormous claws reached Drake.
The impact launched both monsters through three massive stone pillars.
Ancient ruins collapsed around them.
Dust consumed the battlefield.
Drake instinctively shielded his face.
When the dust cleared…
The Alpha was bleeding heavily.
One of its pale armor plates had shattered completely, exposing crimson flesh beneath.
Its breathing had grown ragged.
One foreleg trembled violently.
Yet…
It stood.
Always…
It stood.
— The Tyrant clicked once.
Then attacked again.
Its elongated arm swept across the battlefield with impossible speed.
The Alpha ducked beneath the strike before lunging forward.
Its jaws closed around the Tyrant’s shoulder.
CRUNCH!
Dark blood splattered across the ruined colony.
The Tyrant twisted unnaturally.
Its free arm slammed downward.
The claw struck the Alpha’s side.
A sickening crack echoed throughout the cavern.
The Alpha was thrown across the colony.
Its enormous body crashed into the remains of the ancient throne before finally coming to rest.
The cubs cried out together.
Drake took a step forward.
“No…” The Alpha slowly pushed itself back onto its feet.
One leg no longer supported its weight properly.
Its breathing had become little more than painful gasps.
Even so…
It limped forward.
Back toward the nursery.
Back toward its children.
Drake felt his vision blur.
It wasn’t giving up.
It couldn’t.
— The relic suddenly spoke.
Host observation complete.
Drake frowned.
“What?” Bonefang Alpha behavior recorded.
New instinctive pattern available.
He blinked.
“What are you talking about?” A brief pause followed.
Then the relic answered.
The archive has begun learning behaviors…
Not merely biology.
Drake’s heart skipped.
Until now, he believed the relic only copied flesh.
Blood.
Mana.
DNA.
Now…
It was learning ideals.
Behavior.
Instinct.
Sacrifice.
The realization terrified him.
What exactly…
Had attached itself to his soul?
— The Hollow Antler Tyrant slowly turned away from the Alpha.
Its empty sockets settled upon the nursery.
The cubs.
Drake’s breathing stopped.
The Alpha roared louder than ever before.
Not from dominance.
Not from rage.
From desperation.
It threw itself forward once more.
The Tyrant answered by releasing an enormous wave of black mist.
The Rot Domain expanded instantly.
The colony began dying.
Ancient vines crumbled into ash.
The glowing mana crystals embedded throughout the walls dimmed.
Even the stone itself began cracking beneath the corruption.
Drake fell to one knee.
Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.
The relic reacted.
Host cellular decay increasing.
Emergency recommendation…
Retreat immediately.
Drake remained where he was.
His eyes never left the cubs.
The eldest had positioned itself before its younger siblings exactly as its father had done.
Its body shook uncontrollably.
Yet it refused to move aside.
Drake smiled sadly.
“So that’s where you learned it…” — He slowly stood.
Every instinct told him he would die.
Every calculation agreed.
The relic spoke again.
Estimated survival probability…
A pause.
1.9 percent.
Drake laughed quietly.
“That’s…
somehow better than I expected.” The relic remained silent.
Drake closed his eyes.
Images flooded his mind.
Luna sleeping peacefully beneath white hospital sheets.
The Alpha shielding its children.
The eldest cub standing before its siblings.
Even knowing it could not win.
Drake opened his eyes.
Fear remained.
But something stronger had appeared beside it.
Resolve.
His right hand burned.
The crimson mark spread beneath his skin like flowing magma.
The relic spoke one final sentence.
Not as a command.
Not as an analysis.
Almost…
As a question.
Will the host fight?
Drake looked toward the Alpha.
Then toward the Hollow Antler Tyrant.
He slowly transformed.
Bones shattered.
White armor erupted from beneath his skin.
Power surged through every muscle.
When the transformation ended…
A second Bonefang Ravager stood inside the colony.
Smaller.
Far weaker.
But standing nonetheless.
The Alpha looked at Drake.
Their crimson eyes met.
This time…
The old guardian did not look confused.
It gave the slightest nod.
One warrior…
Acknowledging another.
Then…
Both Alphas charged.
Straight toward the Hollow Antler Tyrant.
