Shen Junhuai looked at her appearance and felt a headache coming on. “You have kept this hidden for so many years; why are you willing to speak up now?”
Xie Cangyue’s expression shifted. “To get the surgery for my mother.”
Shen Junhuai had reviewed Xie Xiangxue’s medical records. He assumed the other party wanted a better treatment environment for her. “I will have Xuan Zuo make arrangements to move her to our private hospital first.”
Xie Cangyue thought for a moment and said, “Do not put her in a single room; she likes it when things are a bit more lively.”
Shen Junhuai replied, “You can choose the room yourself when the time comes.”
Xie Cangyue observed Shen Junhuai’s expression and said, “Also, I do not intend to tell her about this right now; it would do her no good. As for the Shen family, I will leave it to your arrangement.”
“I am already an adult, so whether or not I return to the Shen family holds little meaning, nor do I have any intention of seizing Shen Zhaoran’s things. If you wish, you can destroy this report right here.”
From beginning to end, she had only one goal: to ensure Xie Xiangxue could successfully undergo surgery.
Xie Cangyue’s attitude was clear. Shen Junhuai remained silent for two seconds before saying, “What is yours will not be taken away.”
They had been unaware before, but now that they knew, he certainly could not let Xie Cangyue continue living in such hardship.
“Where are you living now?”
Even if she did not say it, Shen Junhuai likely knew, but she answered honestly, “In the company dormitory.”
“Huiying has been on a strong upward trajectory these past two years, but it is still lacking in some areas. You can come directly to Hengyu,” Shen Junhuai offered her another path, “of course, if you want to go to another company, I can have someone arrange it.”
Xie Cangyue said, “Let us go with Hengyu.”
Shen Junhuai asked, “Do you have any requirements for a place to live?”
Xie Cangyue thought about it. “Somewhere close to the hospital where I can cook.”
“Understood.” He stood up and said, “I will send you back.”
Xie Cangyue replied, “Forget it; your car is too conspicuous. I will take a taxi.”
Shen Junhuai did not argue. He simply transferred a sum of money to her card, saying, “For the taxi fare.”
Xie Cangyue was stunned. Brother, where did you get my card number? And you transferred so much money—do you want me to take a taxi to the United States?
The two walked out of the coffee shop side by side, and Xie Cangyue asked one more question, “If I join Hengyu, what position will I be in?”
“An entry-level position.”
“Fine.” She knew Shen Junhuai had also started from an entry-level position.
She asked again, “Shen Zhaoran must have interned as well, right? Was she also in an entry-level position?”
Shen Junhuai paused. “In a sense.”
“What does ‘in a sense’ mean?”
“She was my assistant.”
“Such blatant nepotism.”
“I vaguely remember that your assistants were all men?”
“Yes, they still are.”
Shen Junhuai kept this matter suppressed and told no one until, days later, Xuan Zuo delivered the information regarding the car accident, the final destination of the donor heart, and Xie Xiangxue’s latest medical reports.
This case was easy to investigate and very clear; every situation was laid bare.
Shen Junhuai sneered, “Look at what the Feng family has done. Feng Junzhe hit and killed someone, and in turn, forced the victim’s family to donate their heart to him.”
Xuan Zuo asked, “Do you need me to intervene?”
Feng Junzhe had just finished his surgery and was lying in the hospital. It would be quite reasonable for him to pass away due to post-operative rejection.
Shen Junhuai replied, “Let Xie Cangyue make her own decision when the time comes.”
He had realized by now that Xie Cangyue was a person of strong will.
“How is the search for an apartment going?”
“Miss Xie chose the apartment in the southern part of the city. She moved in today. Madam Xie Xiangxue’s transfer procedures have also been completed, and a consultation with experts has been arranged. However, the situation is not optimistic; the advice given is to perform surgery as soon as possible.”
Shen Junhuai rubbed his temples while continuing to review other documents.
The investigation into the original baby swap was mostly complete. The next step was to think about how to tell Shen Chengshan and Xia Qiaoya about this, as well as how to tell Shen Zhaoran.
He closed the files and asked, “What is she doing now?”
Xuan Zuo replied, “Still packing her luggage at the apartment.”
Shen Junhuai instructed him to inform the driver that he was going to see Xie Cangyue to discuss business. He had just sat in the passenger seat when he received a message from Shen Zhaoran, asking why they were still not off work were they still working overtime in meetings?
Xuan Zuo felt awkward. How was he supposed to answer? That his boss was going to visit his other sister? He felt a sense of cheating on his partner while being caught by the legal spouse. This was too difficult.
It was late when Shen Junhuai returned home. The butler knew he had not eaten dinner and told the kitchen to prepare some. Shen Zhaoran, who had been watching the stairs, knew her brother had arrived and quickly headed downstairs.
“Why are you so late today? It is almost the New Year; is the company really that busy?”
“I went to handle some matters.”
Shen Zhaoran followed behind him, mentioning which dishes the kitchen cooked well, and added that Dad had returned home as well, arriving only a step earlier than him. Although Shen Junhuai responded to every sentence, Shen Zhaoran always felt he was distracted.
“Is the situation difficult to manage?”
“It is nothing. Do not worry.”
Shen Zhaoran nodded and sat down to eat with him. She did not eat much, mostly keeping him company.
In the evening, Xia Zeyu invited Shen Zhaoran to play a game together. While Shen Zhaoran was busy racking up kills, the other three members of the Shen family stood in Shen Chengshan’s study, staring at several documents in silence. Since Shen Junhuai had brought these reports before them, it meant he had verified them carefully.
Xia Qiaoya clearly had an emotional breakdown; her voice was hoarse. “I should never have gone there back then.”
Shen Chengshan was slightly better off, but not by much. After a while, he calmed down and asked, “Was it artificial or accidental?”
Xia Qiaoya then looked up at Shen Junhuai.
Shen Junhuai had considered this question at the time. Knowing Xie Cangyue would resent him asking Xie Xiangxue, he simply sent people to their hometown, Qingcheng, to investigate.
He stated the conclusion directly, “It was accidental. Because, relatively speaking, Zhaozhao looked more like a premature baby.”
The hospital was filled with disaster victims, and there were not enough doctors and nurses. No one had made name tags for the newborns. Furthermore, neither Xia Qiaoya nor Xie Xiangxue had anyone watching over them, which led to the intern nurse swapping the babies.
Xie Cangyue’s physical condition at the time was a bit too healthy for a premature infant.
Shen Junhuai had also investigated Xie Xiangxue. Her health was poor, and she could not even leave her bed after giving birth. She only had her neighbor, Chen Fang, by her side, with no opportunity to learn Xia Qiaoya’s identity, let alone have the intent to swap babies.
Xia Qiaoya asked with red eyes, “Is she doing well?”
Shen Junhuai handed over another document. “Her foster parents divorced very early on. She lived with her foster mother; although the family was poor, the foster mother treated her very well.”
Xia Qiaoya shed tears while reading. Shen Chengshan did not need to look to know Xie Cangyue had not lived an easy life. He wiped Xia Qiaoya’s tears and instructed, “Do not tell Zhaoran yet. We will meet her before making any plans.”
After all, Xie Cangyue had lived outside for over twenty years. Shen Chengshan did not know her personality; rushing to bring her home might cause conflict with Shen Zhaoran.
Xia Qiaoya felt even sadder thinking about Shen Zhaoran. When she was born, she was like a little kitten, small and pitiful. How could it be that after raising her with such difficulty, she was not her biological child?
Many people could not sleep that night, but the two people at the center of the incident had exceptionally good sleep quality. One was because the problem she worried about most had finally been resolved, and the other was completely unaware.
