Wen Chengxi had just brought Niannian into the Wen residence when he noticed she was a little tense. He carefully arranged her on the sofa.
“Niannian, wait here for a moment. I’ll ask the butler to bring you some milk. Are you hungry?”
Niannian nervously clenched her little fists and said obediently, “I’m not hungry yet. Dad Wen, you can go ahead. I’ll behave.”
For some reason, she felt that once they entered this house, Dad Wen had become much more serious.
His smile wasn’t as warm anymore.
That made her even more uneasy.
Wen Chengxi didn’t notice her thoughts and smiled. “Alright, sit here for a bit. I’ll go upstairs and greet the old master. The milk will be here soon.”
Niannian nodded and watched him go upstairs.
Then she looked around the enormous, palace-like mansion.
It was the biggest house she had ever seen.
Even the chandelier above her head was so huge she didn’t even know how to describe it.
So this was where Dad Wen lived—a real knight’s castle.
Just like in the photos they took today, where Dad Wen was the knight.
While she was thinking, a servant brought over a glass of milk.
Niannian was startled but quickly said softly, “Th-thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” the servant replied kindly and left.
Niannian took small sips of the milk.
Just as she finished half of it, a cold, aged voice came from upstairs.
“Why are you back?”
Niannian immediately looked up.
She heard Dad Wen respond respectfully, “It’s your birthday in two days, Grandpa. Filming just finished, so I came back to celebrate.”
Old Master Wen gave a faint, indifferent reply.
Seeing his grandfather’s attitude, Wen Chengxi felt a little disappointed, but quickly adjusted himself.
“I also brought a child back,” he continued. “She was kidnapped by traffickers and hasn’t found her biological parents yet. We were partners on the show, acting as father and daughter.”
He paused.
“I feel we’re destined, so I want to adopt her as my goddaughter.”
Old Master Wen said flatly, “Your matters, you decide yourself.”
“Yes, sir.”
Wen Chengxi bowed slightly and left the study.
As he went downstairs, he saw Niannian looking up at him with worried eyes.
He forced a smile and hurried down.
Niannian had just finished her milk. “Dad Wen… you don’t look happy.”
“Do I?” he laughed lightly. “Dad Wen is very happy!”
But Niannian shook her head seriously. “If Dad Wen is unhappy, you can tell me.”
The smile on Wen Chengxi’s face faded into a bitter one.
He patted her head. “It’s nothing… I just feel like Grandpa doesn’t like me more and more.”
He wasn’t as outstanding as his older brother, but he worked hard.
Even in the entertainment industry, he never acted recklessly.
Yet he didn’t know what he needed to do to earn his grandfather’s approval.
Niannian pressed her lips together, wanting to comfort him—but he quickly changed the subject.
“Alright, enough of that. Let’s not talk about it.”
He stood up and called the servants to prepare a room for her.
“Come on, I’ll show you around the house.”
The Wen ancestral residence was massive—three connected villas, built over a century ago. Though slightly old, it carried a quiet, restrained elegance.
By the time they finished the tour, it was already dinner time.
The servants prepared a meal and even brought a special child seat for Niannian.
She sat obediently beside Wen Chengxi.
“Is Great-Grandpa not coming to eat?” she asked.
She only knew about Old Master Wen.
“The old master isn’t hungry,” the butler replied. “He has some matters to attend to. Please eat first, Second Young Master.”
Wen Chengxi was used to eating alone in the Wen family, so he didn’t mind.
“What about Big Brother?” he asked.
“The eldest young master went out this afternoon.”
He nodded and turned to Niannian. “Let’s eat then. You must be tired after walking around?”
Niannian shook her head. “Not tired at all!”
She ate obediently.
But she soon noticed something—two dishes were placed separately, with an empty seat and utensils set aside.
“Those are Grandpa’s favorite dishes,” Wen Chengxi explained lightly.
The old master was traditional and frugal. Even in a wealthy family like theirs, he rarely ate separately prepared meals unless he intended to join.
But tonight… he didn’t come down.
Maybe… he really didn’t want to eat with him again.
Wen Chengxi sighed inwardly.
After dinner, he took Niannian upstairs. A nanny helped her bathe, and he returned to his room.
Old Master Wen put down a thick stack of documents and removed his reading glasses.
“Get the kitchen to reheat the food,” the butler suggested cautiously. “It’s almost nine.”
“No need,” the old man said calmly. “I’m not hungry.”
The butler hesitated.
Old Master Wen walked downstairs.
Then he suddenly paused.
His gaze landed on a small child sitting neatly at the dining table.
It was Niannian.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
He looked at her face—and frowned.
