Savannah’s POV

I woke to a thin ray of light cutting across my face.

My body ached the moment I tried to move.Full novel: The Mafia’s Final Possession; Love and Kill — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

I pushed myself up, but something yanked my arm backward.

Clank.

A chain dragged across the floor.

I froze and looked behind me.

My wrists were bound behind my back, the metal links disappearing into the darkness.

“Darn it.”

I shifted again, hoping to find a way to loosen it.

Clank.

The sound echoed through the room and I can’t make myself out of the chain.

I was already cursing inside my mind.

“Why is this thing so heavy and noisy?” I muttered.

A sudden light struck my face.

I squinted against it, trying to see through the brightness.

A tall man stood in front of me.

A scar ran beside his right eye, while a cigarette rested between his lips.

He glanced over his shoulder.

“Boss, the bitch is awake.” A smirk tugged at his mouth.

My chest tightened as my gaze tried to see their faces properly.

The cold, dusty floor pressed against my skin as I tried to move away from him.

Before I could, another man stepped forward and grabbed my face, forcing my head upward.

“We’ve met again, you traitor.” Recognition flashed through my mind.

Out of anger and annoyance I spat at his face.

Inferno’s expression hardened.

He slowly wiped his face with a tissue handed to him by the man dressed in black.

Then he looked back at me.

Smack!

My head snapped to the side.

Heat spread across my cheek as he aggressively slapped me accross the face.

“You filthy bastard.” His voice dropped into a growl.

“Let’s see if you can keep that attitude.”

He turned and walked away as his expression were hard and dark.

The door slammed behind him.

Silence swallowed the room.

I remained on the floor, my cheek pressed against the dust.

A weak chuckle slipped from my lips despite the ache running through my body.

“Fuck you motherfuckers!…”

I tried to move, but pain shot through my back and ribs.

My breath caught, and I clenched my teeth until the worst of it passed.

The room fell quiet again.

I rested my head against the floor and closed my eyes.

Then the chain shifted.

The metal brushed against my side.

“A-ah!” I flinched and pulled away.

Every movement made the ache in my back and ribs worse.

I forced myself to breathe slowly before trying to sit again.

Using what little strength I had left, I pushed against the floor with my feet.

My shoulder struck something hard.

Clang!

A piece of steel fell beside me.

I reached toward it with my fingers.

The edge caught my skin, leaving a small cut.

I pulled my hand back and followed the chain with my fingertips.

Then I felt something warm.

My breathing stopped.

Someone was there.

I leaned closer, straining my eyes against the darkness.

A faint breath reached my ears.

“We can’t get out of here.”It was a woman’s voice.

Her voice was cracked and trembling, barely louder than a whisper.

“I—I’m sorry?”

“I’m Yannah. What’s your name?”

I hesitated.

“Savannah.”

My hands were still bound behind me, just like hers.

I shifted closer until our shoulders nearly touched.

I lowered my voice trying to not get caught.

“Why are you here?”

A weak scoff came from beside me.

“Shouldn’t I be asking you that? Maybe we were both kidnapped.”

My brows pulled together.

She has an attitude even now in her our situation.

I studied the faint outline of her face.

“Are you part of his mafia hierarchy? A made woman, perhaps?” she asked.

Her breathing was uneven.

“And you’re asking me that?” I said.

“You’re not just some ordinary girl they dragged in here, are you?” she added.

I turned toward her.

“What do you know about the mafia?” My brows creased trying to read her in the dimness of the room.

She gave a tired laugh.

“And you’re not a complete fool either.”

Her voice softened.

“Nice to meet you… under these circumstances.”

“He kidnapped me to frame my father,” she continued.

“But he wasn’t updated that my father doesn’t even recognize me anymore. We never cared about each other for a long time.”

The bitterness in her voice lingered between us.

I lowered my gaze as I kept listening to her.

“And you?” she asked.

“Were you an ex-ally of this mafia?”

My shoulders sank.

“I’m not.” I snapped.

I swallowed as she waited for my answer.

“He kidnapped me and used my friend to blackmail me into gathering information about his biggest enemy. I helped my friend escape instead.”

“Nice tactic.”

She shifted her legs until they brushed against mine.

“I don’t know if they’ll find us here. But…”

Her voice faded.

“I think they might be too late.”

My head snapped toward her.

“Who?”

I paused.

“Is it your father?”

“No.” She breathed out slowly.

“My Donnas will find us.”

There was something strange about the way she said it.

Like she wasn’t certain she’d still be here when they arrived.

“But there’s no guarantee I’ll make it.” Her voice had grown weaker.

I leaned toward her.

“Hey.”

She didn’t answer, my hands started to get cold when silence creep in between us.

“Yannah, are you okay?” My voice were trembling as I tried to check on her.

“Maybe.” A short silence followed.

Then she whispered, “Can you trust me even though we just met?”

Something tightened in my chest, as my vision adopted the dimness of this room I tried to read her.

I let out a slow breath.

“Fine.”

“Who are you?” She shifted closer.

My chest tightened as my breathing went heavier.

“W-what do you mean… who am I?”

“That asshole wouldn’t personally deal with someone innocent and ordinary. Are you a mafia’s daughter?” she asked as her voice keep falling apart.

“No.” The answer came too quickly.

“I—I mean, it’s confidential.” I added as my voice can’t avoid to tremble.

“Come on.” Her voice was barely holding together.

“It’s just us here. A sister should be able to trust another sister.”

She paused.

“And I can save you.”

A small laugh escaped me.

“You’re exhausted. Get some rest, Yannah.”

I rested my head against the wall.

“Save your strength. If we get a chance to run, we’ll need it.” I snapped.

“No.” Her voice suddenly became more desperate.

“Please don’t avoid the question, Savannah.” Her faint voice became steady and sharp as if she was saving her strength to make it clear.

I hit the back of my head lightly against the wall.

Trying to think and observe her.

I couldn’t tell her everything.

But at the same time keeping it from her felt wrong.

I drew in a breath.

“I’m a former agent.” The words barely left my mouth.

“He caught me. And my undercover was exposed.” I looked down at the chains around my wrists.

“But that was a long time ago. I’m not an agent anymore.”

I swallowed as if saying the word would only remind me that day.

“They fired me.”

I closed my eyes.

Images of the organization flashed through my mind.

The thing’s they hid from me while I was living naive and fool.

“Can I ask you for a favor?” She suddenly asked that left my expression unfazed.

I opened my eyes.

“What is it?”

She turned toward me.

“I don’t think I’m going to make it.”

My stomach dropped.

“Why are you saying that all of a sudden?”

I tried to keep my voice steady.

“You said your people would come for us.”

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she whispered two words.

“Promise me.”

My chest tightened as her words keep giving me meaning and purpose.

“Promise you what?”

“If something happens to me…” Her voice was broke.

“Keep your word.” She repeated.

I stared at her.

“Replace me if you make it out.”

She took a shaky breath.

“Do it for me. Will you?” A cold feeling settled in my stomach.

“Why are you talking like this?”

I leaned closer.

“You said someone would come for us.”

She remained silent.

“Promise me.” I stared into the darkness.

Something about her words didn’t sit right.

Still, I couldn’t leave her with nothing.

“Fine.”

I exhaled.

“But you have to promise me something too.”

She looked at me.

“We’re getting out of here together.”

I forced a small smile at her.

“Okay?”

She nodded.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

My eyes slowly adjusted to the darkness.

Then I finally saw her face.

Bruises marked her skin.

My breath caught as she stopped moving.

“Yannah…”

I shifted closer.

My bound hands were useless.

I couldn’t even reach for her.

I nudged her with my foot.

“Yannah?”

Theres no response that made my chest keep on pounding then I tried calling her name again.

“Yannah, wake up.”

Her body barely moved.

My fingers trembled behind my back.

“Come on…”

Her eyes opened slightly.

Tears gathered at the corners of her eyes.

“T-told you…”

Her voice was so faint I almost missed it.

“I-I told you…”

“Don’t sleep.” My voice cracked.

“You said someone would save us, didn’t you?”

Her lips barely moved.

“R-remember…”

She struggled to breathe between the words.

“Your promise.”

I nodded quickly.

“I remember.”

Her eyes slowly closed.

“Yannah?”

“Yannah?” I repeatedly calling her name but she didn’t respond anymore.

I stared at her chest and it wasn’t moving anymore.

“No…”

My breathing became uneven.

I leaned forward as far as the chains allowed.

“Please…” I begged yet I can’t do anything to save her.

“PLEASE!” My voice echoed through the room.

“SOMEONE HELP US!” I kept my eyes on her.

Then the door burst open.

A man dressed in black stormed inside and grabbed her body.

“Where are you taking her?” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

Another man crouched beside her and checked for signs of breathing.

My heart pounded.

Pleading that she was just exhausted but my face went in terror.

“She’s still alive, isn’t she?” They were silent and no one of them make a sound.

“Answer me!”

I crawled toward them, dragging the chain behind me.

One of the men pulled out a tactical knife and pointed it toward me.

I stopped.

“Why do you care about her?” His eyes narrowed.

“Shut your mouth, or you’ll end up just like her.”

My eyes widened.

“What?”

A cruel laugh came from behind him.

Before I could move, the man attacked Yannah.

I froze.

The world seemed to stop.

“No…”

My face went cold and horrified.

The men didn’t react.

They simply stood there as if what they had done meant nothing.

“FUCK OFF!” I fought against the chains.

“DON’T TOUCH HER!” I tried crawling toward her.

A hand shoved me backward aggressively that made my head struck the hard wall.

Pain exploded through my skull.

The room felt tilted as the men’s voices became distant.

My vision blurred.

I tried to keep my eyes open but darkness finally pulled me under.
