Looking at Xiaoyao fast asleep, Mu Yining felt an extra ray of comfort in her life, even though she was not yet fully prepared to let others enter her world.
Xiaoyao was a good child, possessing abilities that ordinary kids could never match. With proper guidance, he would certainly survive in the apocalypse. She hoped his parents in heaven would watch over him and bless him to grow up safely.
It was already twelve o’clock noon, and the sun shone far brighter and hotter than usual. Staring at the crimson sun right before her eyes, Mu Yining felt that even sighing would be a waste of breath. She recalled from her past life that during the first three days after the outbreak, the weather was wildly unpredictable: blistering hot during the day, and dropping to unbearable freezing cold at night. In August, people were still dressed in summer clothes, and countless individuals were frostbitten or crippled by the extreme temperatures. It was only because she happened to be hiding inside a car with Shen Mingxuan back then, with enough heater power to carry them through.
Thinking about it now was still laughable—to think she had endured five years with a piece of scum, she would have been better off freezing to death right at the start.
The downtown area was filled with screaming and honking everywhere. Though done out of a desperate cry for help, people failed to realize how many zombies their ignorant actions were drawing in. Mu Yining sped up, heading toward the next gas station. Mo Yao’s appearance had disrupted her original plans, so now she could only reorganize her route while collecting supplies along the way.
However, unexpected surprises never announce their arrival in advance!
On the wide road, a black car sped along at top speed. The engine’s roar attracted the roadside zombies, but before they could even chase after it, the vehicle had already vanished without a trace.
This was only the first day. The number of zombies was still small, and they had not yet evolved to a certain stage, nor had humanity ever thought about uniting to wipe them out. Most people acted out of sheer terror; seeing scenes straight out of movies occur in a civilized, harmonious society made it genuinely difficult for people at this stage to pick up a knife and kill them. Yet, there were also a few desperate outlaws who felt that the arrival of the apocalypse marked the era of their dominance.
Just like the group of people currently blocking the road in front of Mu Yining’s car.
A total of seven men stood in a line right in the middle of the road. One look was enough to tell that these guys were mere street hooligans on ordinary days—or even criminals who had wielded knives and shed blood.
The leader of the group sported a beer belly and a shaved head. Even more ridiculous was the blindingly flashy thick gold chain around his neck. Dangling a cigarette from his mouth, he held a baseball bat in his hand.
Flanking him on both sides were three young, inexperienced brats, each exuding a thuggish aura with blatant contempt and arrogance written all over their faces.
“Boss, we’ve stopped several cars already. This one looks promising—it actually pulled over! But just one isn’t enough for us seven brothers. When will we ever get out of this damn place?” the tall, skinny guy next to the beer-bellied leader said timidly.
“Are you fucking stupid? If we stop this one, can’t we just stop another? Huh? I told you to learn more on ordinary days, but at the critical moment you can’t even secure a damn car, you useless piece of trash…” The beer-bellied man cursed profusely, clearly having reached the end of his patience with his subordinate’s stupidity.
Looking at the seven fools in front of her—oh no, seven people, though they truly weren’t bright in any sense—their conversation had entered Mu Yining’s ears word for word. She simply couldn’t fathom: they had the guts to block cars, but lacked the guts to break into one? Were all those cars parked along the street just decorations to them? What was this—the story of the seven little fools?
Mu Yining slowly brought the car to a halt. Looking at Xiaoyao who was still fast asleep, she calmly took a sip of water, locked the car doors, and stepped out with Alan.
“Yo, it’s a little beauty! We brothers sure got lucky today—look at how pretty that face is, hahaha! Long legs, just my type!” The beer-bellied leader couldn’t take his eyes off Mu Yining the moment he saw her, his face filled with lust, while his henchmen beside him were practically drooling.
Seeing them, Mu Yining felt… seriously, gross.
