Wen Yu was staying in the hospital. Wang Xuemei and Shao Kai didn’t dare leave all the caregiving responsibilities entirely to Shao Wenyue, so after work they rushed over to the ward.
“Wenwen, how are you feeling today? Does your leg still hurt?”
“It doesn’t hurt much anymore.”
Bone fractures don’t heal that easily. The concern and heartache in the elders’ eyes were unmistakable—this time, Wen Yu had truly suffered.
As a man, Shao Kai wasn’t good with comforting words, so he could only show concern in other ways. “What do you want to eat? I’ll go buy it. Let’s not go home for dinner tonight—we’ll eat here with Wenwen.”
Wang Xuemei shot her husband a glance. “How is she supposed to answer that? You’re asking her like this, she won’t know what to choose.”
“Huh?”
What do you mean she wouldn’t know? The cafeteria only sells a few things anyway.
Seeing her husband’s confused expression, Wang Xuemei sighed. “Forget it, I’ll go buy it myself.”
Shao Kai immediately said, “I’ll go with you.”
After decades of marriage, they could read each other’s thoughts with just a look. Wang Xuemei also wanted to give the younger couple some time together. “Alright, come with me then.”
The two of them came and went in a hurry, leaving before Wen Yu even had time to say anything.
Being taken care of so attentively made Wen Yu feel a little embarrassed. She just wanted to recover quickly and not trouble others anymore.
As if reading her thoughts, Shao Wenyue suddenly said, “Don’t think you’re troubling us. We’re family.”
Wen Yu flushed. “Who’s family with you?”
“Whoever marries me is.”
There he went again—being shameless.
Wen Yu simply turned her head away and ignored him. Her mind was already a mess; she couldn’t sort anything out clearly.
She could only take things one step at a time.
After all, she was injured and couldn’t do anything right now.
Fearing Wen Yu would go hungry, Wang Xuemei and Shao Kai didn’t stay out long and quickly returned with food.
There was white porridge, steamed buns, and two side dishes—one meat and one vegetable. Simple, but generous in portion.
“The cafeteria food is too basic. I’ll cook at home and bring it tomorrow,” Wang Xuemei said.
Wen Yu quickly replied, “This is already very good. Balanced nutrition with meat and vegetables.”
In this era, many people still went hungry. Meat was something only eaten during festivals. Wen Yu might be delicate, but she wasn’t picky—she ate whatever was available.
Because she needed to stay in bed to recover, she chose to eat porridge since it was easier to digest.
After dinner came the issue of night care. Wang Xuemei asked Shao Wenyue, “How many days of leave did you take?”
“Five days.”
He had only managed to take leave because he had accumulated days off over the past few years.
“Then you’ll take care of Wenwen these few days. After your leave ends, I’ll take another week off. By the time that ends, Wenwen should be able to be discharged and recover at home.”
There was no better solution for now.
Wen Yu couldn’t return to Shanghai yet, and her father was also unable to take care of her due to health reasons. She could only rely on the Shao family.
After arranging everything and chatting a while longer, the two elders finally left after dark.
It was the first time both of them were staying overnight in the same space as someone of the opposite sex. Even though nothing would happen, their faces still turned slightly red.
Wen Yu cleared her throat. “There’s only one bed here. Where are you sleeping?”
“I’ll borrow a folding bed from the nurse.”
Shao Wenyue asked, “Ready to sleep?”
Wen Yu had already slept a lot during the day, so she wasn’t sleepy yet. But there was nothing else to do at night, so she nodded. “Let’s sleep.”
“I’ll go get hot water first.”
With that, he left holding the basin.
Wen Yu only managed to catch a glimpse of the bright red “double happiness” character painted on the enamel basin.
It was clearly prepared for their wedding—but now it was being used in a completely different way than originally intended.
Because of her leg injury, Wen Yu couldn’t move it, so Shao Wenyue used a hot towel to wipe her feet.
His large hands held her small foot. Her skin was fair, making his complexion look even darker by contrast.
The stark difference created a strong visual impact.
Shao Wenyue felt his throat go dry. He forced himself to stay composed, resisting the urge to linger.
Under the warm yellow light, his usually cold features softened considerably.
A man who could make Wen Yu fall for him at first sight naturally had an outstanding appearance.
As she looked at him, she unknowingly became distracted.
Shao Wenyue felt his chest tighten, his heartbeat thundering like a drum. He even worried she might hear it.
Only when her gaze shifted away did he finally relax.
Wen Yu liked cleanliness and usually insisted on bathing every day, but her current condition didn’t allow it. Shao Wenyue had taken care of her all day and didn’t want to push her further.
“You should wash up and sleep too.”
“Mm.”
He quickly brought over the accompanying bed and washed up before lying down.
The two beds were separated by a small walkway. Since they weren’t familiar with each other yet, the silence between them felt a little awkward.
At night, the bone pain intensified.
Wen Yu endured it silently so as not to disturb his sleep.
“If it hurts, you don’t have to endure it.”
The room was dark. Wen Yu wasn’t sure how he could tell. “It’s not that bad.”
Shao Wenyue had once thought she was delicate and unable to endure hardship.
But after everything that had happened, his perception of her had completely changed.
Being delicate didn’t mean being weak.
When faced with hardship, her resilience was no less than anyone else’s.
