After a peaceful night.

After being taken care of by Shao Wenye for a day and a night, Wen Yu didn’t cause any trouble. In the following days, Wang Xuemeng and her husband gradually felt at ease and fully entrusted their son with taking care of her.

Of course, they weren’t completely hands-off. Wang Xuemeng still prepared breakfast and dinner at home every day and brought them to the ward. As for lunch, they could only rely on the hospital cafeteria.Full novel: The Pretty Military Wife of the 1970s — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Eggs were available every day, and meat was ensured once a day as well. The portions weren’t large, but they never treated the patient unfairly.

Wen Yu thought to herself that if it weren’t because she had injured her leg, if others knew she was living like this, she might even be accused of “bourgeois indulgence.”

Half a month passed like this before Wen Yu was finally discharged.

Even with people taking care of her, staying in the hospital was still far from comfortable.

At this time, a package from Shanghai arrived for Wen Yu. Inside were 500 yuan, two bags of milk powder, and a letter.

She couldn’t help but suspect—did her father give her all his savings?

Wen Yu felt complicated. It seemed she had to recover quickly, then find a job. If she kept relying on her family like this, she wouldn’t even have the face to meet anyone.

When settling the hospital bill, Wen Yu insisted on paying it herself. In addition, she also gave 200 yuan to Shao Wenye’s mother for daily expenses.

She couldn’t let them both spend money and effort. That would be too embarrassing.

Wang Xuemeng didn’t want to accept it. In her heart, they were already family—why be so distant?

But seeing Wen Yu’s firm attitude, she could only accept it so she could recover in peace.

After discharge, Wen Yu still returned to the Shao family, staying in the same room as before.

Mainly because she had nowhere else to go.

“Wenwen, just lie down and rest first. Don’t rush to get out of bed. But even when lying down, you still need to move your hands and feet—otherwise you might develop some illness.”

Wang Xuemeng thought for a moment but couldn’t quite remember what it was called, only vaguely recalling that bedridden patients needed to exercise lightly.

Wen Yu nodded repeatedly. “I understand, Auntie. You should go take care of your own things. Don’t worry about me.”

“Alright. I’ll bring your meal later… Auntie will send it over.”

“Okay, thank you for your trouble.”

“We’re family, no need for formalities.”

After she left, Wen Yu carefully sat up and picked up the letter from the table.

In the letter, her father described his recent situation and told her to focus on recovering in the courtyard and not worry about home. Upon learning that Shao Wenye had been taking care of her in the hospital, he even said she could give him a chance and observe him properly. If she still felt he wasn’t a qualified husband, then she could come home.

Wen Yu read slowly, occasionally pausing to think over the meaning behind the words. It took her a full ten minutes to read it carefully from start to finish.

She found it strange—her father had always been stubborn. Why had he suddenly changed his attitude toward Shao Wenye?

However, she agreed with her father’s evaluation of him. He valued responsibility too much, sometimes to the point of neglecting those around him. But that didn’t necessarily make him wrong either.

After a long silence, she put the letter away. Even she, as the person involved, couldn’t sort everything out clearly—so she would leave it to time.

Time would reveal everything.

In Wen Yu’s heart, Shao Wenye’s careful care hadn’t erased her previous doubts.

She wasn’t sure that if another urgent situation arose, would he still choose Xu Wan first?

And she wasn’t sure whether, in that moment, she could truly understand and accept him without resentment.

Knock, knock, knock—

Wen Yu’s eyes flickered. Only one person in the Shao family knocked like that—Shao Rong.

She decided to ignore it.

Anyway, the door was closed. With that little kid’s height, he couldn’t open it.

“Open the door!”

The commanding tone made Wen Yu twitch her lips. Were all kids this arrogant these days?

She suddenly felt playful and replied, “Why don’t you open it yourself?”

Shao Rong was clinging to the door, tiptoeing as hard as he could, his little face red from effort—but he still couldn’t reach the handle.

“Open it for me!”

“Why should I open it for you?”

Wen Yu wasn’t stupid. The kid clearly disliked her. If she let him in and he touched her injured leg, all her recovery would be wasted.

She couldn’t afford to offend him, but she could avoid him.

“If you don’t open it, I’ll hate you even more!”

“Then hate me. I don’t care about your liking anyway.”

The blunt reply made Shao Rong burst into tears. Why didn’t she care?

When he said he didn’t like Grandpa and Grandma, they always got sad…

“I hate you!”

Wen Yu sneered. “Good. I don’t like you either.”

Shao Rong had never been treated like this before. He burst into loud, earth-shaking tears that echoed through the courtyard.

Soon, Wang Xuemeng’s scolding voice came from downstairs.

“What are you doing up there? Didn’t I tell you not to disturb your aunt’s rest? You turned around for a second and you ran upstairs already!”

Before she could even go up, someone else arrived first.

Shao Rong was lifted by the collar.

“Stop causing trouble. If you keep disturbing your aunt’s recovery, I’ll deal with you.”

He looked up and saw his uncle’s dark, stern face—and immediately stopped crying.

His aunt had told him before: once his uncle got married, he would side with his wife, and there would be no place for him and his mother anymore in the family.

That was why he wanted to bully the new aunt while no one was watching—so she would get scared and leave.

But now, he didn’t dare anymore.

Quietly, he let himself be carried downstairs.

Inside the room, Wen Yu felt a flash of awkwardness.

She wondered—did anyone hear what she just said?

It felt great when she said it…

But she had almost forgotten—she was still staying in someone else’s house.
