The million-yuan check never made it out of Lu Chi’s hands.
Sitting in the car, he couldn’t help staring at it over and over.
“A-Chuan, does she think it’s too little?”
A-Chuan, the head of the bodyguard team who had earlier invited Zhao Yinuo into the car, sat in the passenger seat. Hearing the question, he calmly replied, “Sir, I don’t know.”
“If you don’t know, why did you answer?”
Lu Chi looked up and glared at him before lowering his head to stare at the check again.
“But I told her to write whatever amount she wanted, and she still refused. Why?”
Not only had she refused the money, she had actually thanked him.
Sure enough, his personal charm was even more irresistible than money.
That damn, impossible-to-contain charisma of his.
Through the rearview mirror, A-Chuan watched Lu Chi’s expression. The corners of his lips twitched upward ever so slightly before he quickly pressed them back down, wisely keeping his mouth shut.
Lu Chi was perfectly capable of answering his own questions. There was no need for him to butt in.
Sure enough, less than two seconds later, Lu Chi put down the check. After thinking for a moment, he said, “Interesting.”
No one responded.
After a brief silence in the car, Lu Chi suddenly spoke again.
“A-Chuan, three minutes…”
“Understood, sir.”
A-Chuan responded instantly.
Three minutes. He wanted the complete background information on that woman, right?
There was no one in the world who understood that line better than A-Chuan.
“I wasn’t finished.”
Lu Chi sounded displeased.
“Why didn’t you ask which woman?”
They had been Lu Chi’s trusted aide and right-hand man for more than a decade. Did he really need to ask?
A-Chuan sighed inwardly but dutifully played along.
“Sir, which woman are you referring to?”
Lu Chi hesitated for two seconds.
“The number-one beauty in traditional Chinese style. I’ve seen her now. She really does look exactly like she does in the magazine photos.”
The pictures hadn’t been heavily edited or misleading. She really was quite beautiful.
With looks like hers, she was admittedly a little lacking compared with him, but there weren’t many women who could actually look better than her.
Lu Chi sighed.
People as beautiful as him were simply too rare in this world.
Hearing that Lu Chi wanted information on Tang Wan, A-Chuan calmly replied, “Understood, sir. I’ll look into it.”
As a public figure, Tang Wan wasn’t the only one whose information was readily available online. Even some information about her manager, Zhao Yinuo, could be found publicly.
Of course, information online could be a mixture of truth and rumors. But when it came to a professional like A-Chuan, anything he dug up was guaranteed to be accurate—and he could do it incredibly fast.
By the time Lu Chi returned to his mansion, took a shower, poured himself a glass of red wine, and had just begun idly swirling it around, A-Chuan had already brought him two files.
“Sir, here’s the information you asked me to investigate.”
Lu Chi uncrossed his legs and put down his wineglass, looking at A-Chuan in confusion.
“Two files?”
“One is for Miss Tang Wan, the number-one beauty in traditional Chinese style. The other is for Miss Zhao Yinuo, the woman you took to the hospital today.”
“So her name is Zhao Yinuo. That’s a pretty good name.”
After casually complimenting her, Lu Chi immediately frowned and scolded him.
“Why did you investigate her?”
A-Chuan thought to himself:
Because I’m a professional.
“Don’t you need it, sir?”
A-Chuan reached out, looking as though he intended to take the file back.
Lu Chi glanced at him and calmly snatched Zhao Yinuo’s file first.
“Twenty-four. Quite young…”
He flipped through the information.
“She graduated from the University of Finance and Economics. She even used to work at the Su Group. Why did she suddenly become a manager?”
Lu Chi rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
“Could it be because she’s passionate about this industry?”
“Based on my assessment, it may have something to do with Su Muyang, her business partner,” A-Chuan couldn’t help reminding him.
He had actually highlighted this piece of information in the file.
Unfortunately, Lu Chi’s eyes seemed capable of seeing only whatever information he wanted to see. Everything else went straight past him.
A-Chuan dutifully added, “There are rumors online that Tang Wan and Su Muyang are dating, and Miss Zhao Yinuo is Su Muyang’s manager.”
A-Chuan could investigate anything that had already been exposed online. But when it came to deeply private matters that the people involved were actively trying to keep secret, he couldn’t obtain solid evidence and could only make deductions.
He reminded Lu Chi, “Tang Wan and Su Muyang are indeed unusually close. Their relationship is clearly not ordinary.”
“It doesn’t matter. Su Muyang isn’t a threat.”
Lu Chi said it casually, as though the matter wasn’t worth a second thought. Other than himself, no one else was worthy of entering his eyes.
He spoke with complete confidence.
“Even married couples can get divorced. They’re only dating. Naturally, they can break up too.”
A-Chuan fell silent.
The boss could do whatever he wanted. There was no point trying to stop him anyway.
Leaving the files behind for Lu Chi to read at his leisure, A-Chuan clocked out and left.
He was already accustomed to things like this, so everything that had happened today seemed perfectly ordinary to him.
But for Zhao Yinuo, it had been a completely different story.
When Zhao Yinuo returned home, she collapsed onto her bed. She spent a long time going over everything that had happened in her head, but she still couldn’t figure out how the evening had somehow developed into such a bizarre situation.
She simply couldn’t make sense of it.
Unable to sleep, Zhao Yinuo finally climbed out of bed, turned on her computer, and began searching for all kinds of information about Lu Chi.
This time, she wasn’t merely skimming through whatever information she could find. She dug into every possible clue and refused to overlook even the smallest detail.
But it quickly became obvious that the information about Lu Chi available online had been deliberately cleaned up.
Even after searching foreign websites, she couldn’t find anything particularly useful.
In the end, she had no choice but to resort to the oldest method of all—calling people she knew and asking around.
“Hello, President Zhang? This is Zhao Yinuo. We have a collaboration with Shengxing Entertainment, and I wanted to ask you about President Lu…”
In the end, Zhao Yinuo failed to uncover Lu Chi’s actual background.
But she did manage to find out quite a bit about his preferences.
Lu Chi liked signing handsome men and beautiful women. Acting ability wasn’t important. As long as they were good-looking, he was willing to pour resources into them.
Lu Chi also loved investing in melodramatic dramas.
The more outrageous and over-the-top the plot, the more money he was willing to throw at it.
