Xu You didn’t take what happened that afternoon to heart and went to work on time the next day.
There was still more than half an hour before the seven o’clock shift change.
“Dr. Pan, I’ve had enough rest these past two days. You should go home early and get some rest.”
Dr. Pan looked at her worriedly.
“Xiao Xu, are you really okay?”
“I’m fine. I can handle something this minor.”
After saying that, Xu You prepared to take the next patient.
Unexpectedly, the patient said, “I don’t want her treating me! I heard that she actually harmed a patient just to prove her medical skills and secure the position of department director.”
Dr. Pan was furious.
“Rumors can hurt people badly. If you don’t want Dr. Xu to treat you, then go line up at the outpatient department.”
“Can’t you treat me?”
“My shift is over!” Dr. Pan snapped back angrily.
Xu You patted Dr. Pan’s shoulder reassuringly.
“If they don’t want me treating them, I’m actually happy to have some peace and quiet. But what about you? Aren’t you afraid the patient will report you?”
“What am I afraid of? If I get reported, then I can enjoy some peace and quiet together with you.”
Then, the moment Dr. Pan got home, someone came to summon him to the director’s office.
Xu You was there too.
Director Yang immediately launched into a scolding.
“Old Pan, it’s not that I’m criticizing you, but why is your mouth so sharp? Why did you have to offend a patient and get them to report you to me?”
Dr. Pan secretly glanced at Xu You and muttered under his breath, “Are you a jinx? You said I’d get reported, and I actually got reported.”
Xu You gave Dr. Pan an apologetic look.
“I didn’t realize my mouth was that accurate.”
Dr. Pan sighed.
“Forget it. Back when I was in surgery, people used to report me all the time, saying I was too rough when changing their dressings. They acted like I’d murdered their fathers.”
Xu You tried and tried, but eventually couldn’t hold back her laughter.
“And you still have the nerve to laugh! Do you even understand that if no patients are willing to see you and nobody believes in you, you won’t be able to stay here either?”
Xu You shrugged indifferently.
“Whatever. If this place won’t keep me, there’s always somewhere else that will. My master may not have many talents, but he has plenty of fellow disciples. Next time, I’ll just go work at my Uncle Yan’s hospital.”
Director Yang couldn’t help but tap Xu You on the forehead.
“Look at you. There are obviously plenty of tactful ways to resolve conflicts.”
Xu You said, “My master said that among all his fellow disciples, you’re the one who causes the most trouble. He also said you once said that you came here to treat illnesses and save people, not to smooth things over and play peacemaker. You’re not even that old. How did all that sharpness from back then get worn away?”
Dr. Pan’s eyes widened.
He never would have guessed that Xu You had connections too!
Director Yang rubbed his temples in frustration.
“No wonder when I recruited you to the military hospital, your master practically wanted to set off firecrackers.”
Xu You rubbed her nose.
“It wasn’t quite that exaggerated.”
“Enough. Go back to work. If those patients don’t want to see you, then it means their conditions aren’t urgent. They don’t have life-threatening problems, so just tell them to go line up at the outpatient department themselves.”
Dr. Pan glanced at Director Yang.
That was exactly what he had said moments ago, yet he had been scolded for it.
“What are you looking at? I’ll deduct your salary if you keep staring.”
Dr. Pan immediately looked away and decisively left.
He knew very well that he had escaped a salary deduction this time because of Xu You.
If Xu You hadn’t openly exposed her relationship with Director Yang in front of him and treated him like one of their own, Director Yang probably would still have punished him according to the rules.
“Xiao Xu, thank you this time.”
Xu You waved her hand.
“Don’t mention it. You were speaking up for me too. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have reported you.”
Xu You returned to the emergency department.
Apparently, quite a few patients were afraid that she might silently treat them to death, so the emergency department was unusually quiet.
Xu You was more than happy to enjoy the peace and dug out an old neurology textbook she had kept at the bottom of her storage box.
After meeting Wu Qingsheng at the guesthouse that day, she had wanted to study more about this field.
Xu You continued going to work at the hospital every day. Only a handful of patients with genuinely urgent conditions dared to seek treatment from her.
Xu You continued to treat patients normally, directing them to the appropriate departments when necessary and handling emergency cases as required.
Xu You kept waiting for the investigation results.
But before any results came, two people were transferred to the emergency department.
Because of this, Director Yang specifically called everyone in the emergency department together for a meeting.
“Our military has thirty thousand personnel. Including their families and civilian employees, there are roughly fifty thousand people here. Recently, because of what happened with Dr. Xu, quite a few patients have reported to the base leadership that it has become inconvenient to seek medical treatment. The base leadership therefore places great importance on restoring order in the emergency department.”
Director Yang paused and glanced at Xu You.
Xu You’s expression remained calm.
Director Yang was extremely nervous, afraid that this ticking time bomb could explode at any moment.
He couldn’t bring himself to scold her, let alone punish her.
So he could only brace himself and continue.
“For this reason, I’ve transferred two capable people to the emergency department. I hope they can help the department quickly return to normal.”
Yu Jianbai was shy by nature and looked to be around twenty-five or twenty-six.
“Hello, everyone. I’m Yu Jianbai from internal medicine. I’ve been practicing medicine for three years. I hope everyone will take good care of me.”
Zhu Lin had a stern, expressionless face.
“I’m Zhu Lin. I’ve been a nurse in obstetrics and gynecology for twenty-nine years.”
Director Yang led the applause, welcoming the two of them to the emergency department.
“The emergency department now has three doctors and seven nurses. It’s beginning to take shape.”
“From now on, I appoint Zhu Lin as acting head nurse and Pan Qiwen as acting director. The probationary period will be three months. After three months, you’ll officially take the positions.”
The meeting room fell silent.
Everyone secretly glanced at Xu You.
Xu You swept her eyes over them.
“Why are you all looking at me? What do you think I’m going to do, flip the table?”
Xu You was the first to applaud.
The others didn’t dare clap.
The only sound in the meeting room was Xu You’s applause, making the atmosphere strangely awkward.
“Is there anything else? If not, I’m going back to work.”
Director Yang could only say, “Meeting adjourned.”
Xu You stood up and dragged her chair back with a harsh screech before striding out of the meeting room without looking back.
Dr. Pan timidly spoke up.
“Director, how can you appoint me as the director? I know my own abilities. I’m not as capable as Xiao Xu.”
Zhu Lin also agreed coldly.
“Director, since when have rumors been allowed to determine hospital appointments?”
Director Yang had been careful this time. Everyone transferred to the emergency department was someone who held a great deal of goodwill toward Xu You.
Director Yang sighed.
“I’m only a small hospital director. I still have to listen to the opinions of the higher-ups. If Dr. Xu is in a bad mood lately, please be a little more understanding.”
Everyone else nodded heavily.
After leaving the meeting room, Director Yang took a shortcut toward the base.
He was afraid Xu You would corner him and throw a sack over his head.
He didn’t see the old chief, but he did run into Regiment Commander Shen—Shen Xu.
Shen Xu said, “The old chief asked me to tell you that the case involves many people, so it can’t be concluded in the short term.”
The moment Director Yang heard that, he knew the matter was serious.
“Then our Dr. Xu is really being wronged. A young woman has had to endure so many misunderstandings, and she even lost the position of department director.”
Shen Xu paused.
“I’ll convey Dr. Xu’s grievances to the old chief.”
As he spoke, he handed over a bottle of medicinal ointment for bruises.
“The old chief knows everything that’s going on. He specifically gave this ointment to Dr. Xu.”
Director Yang had also noticed that Xu You had unconsciously been supporting her waist during the meeting.
He muttered quietly, “He thinks a little favor like this will win her over. When I recruited Dr. Xu, I originally promised her the position of department director. Now I don’t even dare meet her alone. I’m afraid she’ll beat me up.”
Shen Xu listened quietly without saying a word.
“Forget it. There’s no point telling you all this.”
When Director Yang quietly returned to his office, he pushed open the door—
and saw Xu You already sitting in his chair, calmly brewing tea.
