When Director Yang secretly returned to his office, he pushed open the door and saw Xu You already sitting in his chair, brewing tea.
Director Yang immediately put on a flattering smile.
“Haha, what brings my most beloved junior niece here?”
Xu You shot Director Yang a sideways glance without saying a word, simply sitting there and watching the old man put on his performance.
After awkwardly acting for a few lines and realizing Xu You wasn’t playing along, the old man could only take out the ointment for bruises.
“I just went to the base to demand an explanation for you, but they said the case involves a lot of people and it’ll take a few more days before they can clear your name.”
Xu You was surprised.
How could a case involving nothing more than a patient concealing her medical history have become so complicated?
“This is the ointment for bruises that the old chief gave you. Where are you hurt? How come I didn’t know? Have you gone to get yourself checked?”
Xu You shook her head.
“I don’t need to. Regiment Commander Peng only shoved me, and I accidentally bumped into the gurney.”
“Then this ointment will work well for you. I heard it’s specially made for the old chief. Apparently, the old chief suffered quite a few injuries when he was young, and now that he’s older, everything hurts. This ointment makes him feel much better. He shows it off everywhere he goes.”
Xu You looked at the familiar bottle, tugged at the corner of her mouth, and didn’t refuse.
“I’m leaving.”
She picked up the bottle of ointment, drank the rest of the tea in her cup, and walked out briskly.
“You’re just leaving like that? You’re not going to make a fuss?”
Xu You couldn’t help rolling her eyes.
“I know what matters and what doesn’t.”
She reached the door, then turned back.
Director Yang’s face fell.
“I knew you weren’t that magnanimous. Go ahead, tell me how you plan to torment me.”
Xu You said, “Write me a certificate of marital status.”
“You’re getting married?!!!”
“Mm. I have some free time recently, so I figured I might as well get married.”
Director Yang had originally wanted to persuade Xu You to calm down, but Battalion Commander Chen didn’t seem too bad. His mother seemed a little difficult to deal with, but Xu You only got stronger when faced with stronger opposition. She should be able to handle it.
Director Yang wrote the certificate for her.
“Remember to give me some wedding candy.”
“Mm.”
Xu You left, walking lightly. It was obvious that she was actually looking forward to the marriage.
This was good too. At least he hadn’t failed his senior brother’s request.
She had lost the position of department director, but at least she had gained a husband.
Xu You returned to the emergency department. Everyone was busy working in an orderly manner. When they saw her, they simply greeted her briefly before returning to their tasks.
With two additional people in the emergency department, everyone’s workload became much lighter, and they also had to rearrange the shifts.
Dr. Pan painfully gave up some of his beloved night shifts, while Xu You was assigned ten night shifts.
Xu You continued treating patients as usual.
Some patients refused to let Xu You treat them, and Xu You didn’t force them. She simply had Head Nurse Zhu Lin assign them to other doctors.
Yet whenever Dr. Pan and Dr. Yu took over those patients, they would turn around and ask Xu You,
“Dr. Xu, this patient’s condition is a little tricky. How should we handle it?”
A warm current flowed through Xu You’s heart.
With the medical staff in the emergency department openly showing their support for Xu You, the patients also began to wonder whether those rumors were actually false.
Otherwise, why would all these doctors and nurses keep asking Dr. Xu for advice?
And if Dr. Xu really harmed people, how could she still be allowed to continue treating patients at the hospital?
By the afternoon shift, although the patients still looked wary when they saw Xu You, at least they were no longer refusing her treatment.
At the end of the shift, Dr. Pan asked her concernedly,
“Xiao Xu, how did you feel today?”
Xu You replied, “Thanks to all of you, I was busy all day. My mouth is completely dry now. I just want to squat under a faucet and drink water.”
“Hehe, we’re all in the same department. How could we let you enjoy all the benefits alone? We have to share both the good times and the hardships.”
Xu You patted Dr. Pan on the shoulder.
“Director Pan, you’ve only been in the position for one day and you already have quite the air of a director. Not bad. You even know how to comfort a colleague who’s suffered a setback at work.”
Dr. Pan stammered nervously.
“Well… I’m only the acting director. Once these three months are over and your name is cleared, this position will definitely be yours.”
“Tsk. Our Director Pan has even learned how to make empty promises? Trying to get me to work myself to death for the department? Forget it. I’m getting off work right now.”
Hearing the relaxed tone in Xu You’s voice, Dr. Pan finally confirmed that she hadn’t taken the matter to heart.
After learning that the department director’s salary was 130 yuan a month, he realized he couldn’t bear to give up the position so easily. He genuinely needed the money. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have shamelessly monopolized all the night-shift allowances before.
On her way to the cafeteria, Xu You ran into her good friend Wang Shu.
Wang Shu put an arm around her shoulders and looked her over carefully.
“I thought you’d secretly hide somewhere and cry after losing the department director position.”
“Not a chance. I know that when it comes to promotions, ability and luck are both indispensable.”
Xu You glanced at Wang Shu.
“Just like you. As long as your teacher doesn’t retire, you’ll be stuck at the attending physician level for the rest of your life, earning seventy-five yuan a month.”
Wang Shu let out a howl.
“I’m going to fight you! Why do you always have to rub salt into my wounds? I can’t exactly assassinate my teacher and usurp her position just to become department director, can I?”
“Wang Shu, my good student. Quite ambitious, aren’t you?”
The gynecology department director’s eerie voice came from behind Wang Shu.
“Come on. Tell me exactly how you plan to assassinate your teacher.”
“Teacher, let me explain…”
Wang Shu was dragged away by the gynecology department director, and Xu You finally got some peace.
After eating her fill, Xu You lazily walked back toward the dormitory.
Thinking about how she was about to get married, she deliberately detoured to the service station and bought two pounds of White Rabbit wedding candies.
Xu You was in a good mood. For once, she went to the washroom and carried back a bucket of hot water. After taking a warm bath, she drank her traditional Chinese medicine.
Then she had a good night’s sleep.
The next day, Xu You had just gotten up when she heard knocking at the door.
It was Chen Qingsong.
“Comrade Xu You, I’m about to leave on an urgent mission. When I come back, we’ll get married.”
Xu You nodded considerately.
“Okay. Be careful.”
“Wait for me to come back.”
Chen Qingsong squeezed Xu You’s hand before turning around and leaving briskly.
Xu You watched his tall figure stride away. She returned to her room, washed up, and got ready for work.
Then she noticed a large bag of White Rabbit milk candies sitting on the table.
After thinking about it, she put the candies into a drawer.
After drinking her traditional Chinese medicine, Xu You went to work.
Ever since she suspected that the mysterious man from her dreams might be Chen Qingsong’s superior, Xu You hadn’t stopped taking her traditional Chinese medicine.
On the third day after Chen Qingsong left on his mission, a middle-aged woman with a head full of white hair stormed into the emergency department.
“Xu You, you shameless woman! Get out here!”
Head Nurse Zhu Lin immediately came out.
“This is a hospital. Please keep your voice down!”
“I’m looking for Xu You! Tell her to come out! After killing my son, she still wants to get married? How dare she!”
Xu You walked out of the resuscitation room and saw Liang Jin’s mother, Song Jiang.
Because her only son had died, Song Jiang had literally aged into a white-haired woman from grief.
Xu You was dazed for a moment.
It had been two years since she had last seen Senior Brother Liang’s mother, Song Jiang.
Back when she and Senior Brother Liang got married, Song Jiang had been very happy and had even given her a large red envelope.
