The colossal shadow looming over Julian didn’t strike.

It hovered for three agonizing seconds, its crimson eyes burning through the haze of ozone, before the dark energy simply folded back into the Prince’s boots.

Julian gasped, his knees giving out as he collapsed onto the cool, cracked marble floor, unconscious once more.Full novel: The Villainess and Her Bimbo System — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The volatile magic current had settled into a low, steady purple thrum, stabilized by the siphon, leaving the inner sanctuary of the ruined temple drowning in heavy, suffocating silence.

Roxanne sat flat on her ass in the dust, her legs feeling like lead pipes.

Her palms were raw and blackened from driving the Key into the core, her tattered dress smelled like a burnt tire, and every muscle in her back twitched from pure physical exhaustion.

Ever since she’d died in her old world and gotten dragged into this medieval fantasy nightmare, she hadn’t gotten a single solid hour of sleep.

Not one.

She’d been stabbed, chased by monorails, dragged into Hell, and forced to execute cringy theater lines, all on zero rest.

“Is everyone done almost blowing up the world?” Roxanne wheezed, wiping a streak of black soot across her forehead with the back of her wrist.

“Because if another ancient god wakes up in the next five minutes, I am going to lie down and let it eat me.” Nobody answered immediately.

The silence was thick, charged with a strange, heavy tension that had nothing to do with monsters or dimensional rifts.

Ethan was the first to move.

His divine reserves were completely shot, but he dragged himself over to her side anyway, his white priest robes trailing through the dirt.

His silver staff clattered uselessly onto the floor as he dropped to his knees right in front of her.

His hands, trembling violently and slick with his own blood, hovered over her scorched arms.

“Roxanne…” Ethan’s voice was barely a whisper, hoarse and raw.

“Don’t move.

Please.” A faint, golden light flickered at his fingertips, a basic healing spell, tiny and pathetic compared to his usual blinding radiance.

He pressed his palms gently against her burnt skin.

The cool, soothing warmth made Roxanne wince, but she didn’t pull away.

Above Ethan’s messy silver hair, his golden text box hovered, soft and steady: Target: Ethan (High Priest of the Sun) Affection Level: 68% (Devoted / Raw Relief / Quiet Guilt) True Thought: She handled dark antimagic to save us all while I stood by, helpless.

My hands are sacred, but they feel completely useless right now.

“Stop it, priest,” Roxanne muttered, though her tone lacked its usual venom.

“You look like you’re about to pass out yourself.

Save your magic before your brain leaks out your nose.” “Let me do this,” Ethan insisted, his silver eyes looking directly into hers with a quiet, stubborn intensity that made her chest feel strangely tight.

“Just…

let me help you.

Please.” Before Ethan could apply another thread of magic, a heavy, leather-clad hand reached out and firmly grasped the priest’s wrist, pulling him back.

Alistair stood over them.

The Vanguard Commander had unclasped his heavy, divine-rigged cloak, his broadsword finally sheathed at his hip.

His pristine silver armor was scratched and covered in grey soot, but his dark eyes were fixed entirely on Roxanne.

Without a word, he unrolled his thick, fur-lined tactical cloak and draped it over her trembling shoulders.

The weight was heavy, smelling of steel, leather, and cedar, instantly blocking out the drafty night air blowing through the shattered sanctuary roof.

“Commander–!” Ethan started, his brow furrowing.

“You’re draining the last of your spiritual core, High Priest,” Alistair said gruffly, stepping in between Ethan and Roxanne.

He unclipped a small leather pouch from his belt, pulling out a roll of clean, white linen bandages and a bottle of clear medicinal salve.

He dropped to one knee, his massive frame completely shielding Roxanne from the draft.

“Let a soldier handle simple wounds.” Roxanne blinked, looking up at the stern, unreadable face of the commander.

“Alistair, I swear to God, if you try to put a strap on my arm—” “Quiet,” Alistair growled softly.

He didn’t wait for her permission.

He reached out, his calloused fingers surprisingly gentle as he took her hand.

He didn’t flinch at the soot or the blood.

Gently, meticulously, he unscrewed the salve and began dabbing cooling paste onto her raw palms.

His fingers brushed against her wrist, right where her pulse was jumping wildly.

Above Alistair’s head, his magenta box flared softly in the dim light: Target: Alistair (Imperial Vanguard Commander) Affection Level: 63% (Profound Relief / Deeply Affected / Possessive Restraint) True Thought: Her hands are so small.

She throws herself into cosmic fires without a second thought, and I have to watch it happen every single time.

I want to lock her in my estate where nothing can ever touch her again.

Roxanne felt her face flush hot under the soot.

“You’re…

you’re pressing too hard,” she muttered, attempting to pull her hand back, but Alistair’s grip held firm, not tight enough to hurt, but absolute in its insistence.

“Hold still, Roxanne,” Alistair murmured, his thumb lightly stroking the uninjured skin of her wrist.

“You’re safe now.

The threat is gone.” “How touching,” a smooth, dark voice purred from the shadows of the altar pillar.

Lucifer leaned against the broken marble, casually twirling a silver pocket watch between his long fingers.

His suit coat was slightly rumpled, his silk tie loosened just a fraction, revealing the pale skin of his throat.

He looked like a wealthy nobleman relaxing after an entertaining theater production.

“A knight playing nursemaid and a priest offering pious tears,” Lucifer chuckled, his crimson eyes glittering in the dark as he looked down at Roxanne.

“And yet, my little bird came to me when the world was about to end.

She knows who actually gets things done.” Alistair didn’t look up from bandaging her fingers, but his jaw clenched tight enough to pop.

“She used you as a tool, demon.

Do not confuse necessity for affection.” “Is that what you tell yourself to sleep at night, Commander?” Lucifer cooed, taking a slow step closer.

He reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulled out a pristine, silk handkerchief embroidered with gold thread, and tossed it casually into Roxanne’s lap.

“Wipe your face, little bird.

You look like a chimney sweep.” “I will shove this handkerchief down your throat, Lucy,” Roxanne snapped, though she instinctively picked it up and dabbed at her cheek anyway.

It smelled like expensive lavender and clove.

From the dark corner behind the altar, a low, raspy chuckle echoed.

Malakai slunk out of the shadows, dragging his feet.

His left arm was still heavily mutated, sharp, pitch-black feathers covering his skin down to his clawed fingers, the faint blue-green lines of dragon rot pulsing beneath the plumage like toxic veins.

He leaned heavily against a fallen pillar just a few feet from Roxanne, his amber eyes hooded, dark circles bruised beneath his pale skin.

“Look at you,” Malakai muttered softly, a crooked, tired smirk touching his lips.

“Surrounded by a full holy guard and a demon lord, and you’re still threatening to choke people out.

Never change, sweetheart.” Roxanne looked at his mutated arm, her brows drawing together.

“Malakai…

your arm.

It looks like shit.” “Feels like shit too,” Malakai admitted, slumping down until he was sitting on the marble next to her, his shadow wing dissolving into fine black dust.

He leaned his head back against the stone, his eyes turning to look at her through his messy dark hair.

“But I’m alive.

You pulled us out of the void, little bunny.

I owe you one.” Above Malakai’s head, his box flickered with a quiet, steady amber glow: Target: Malakai (Shadow Assassin) Affection Level: 55% (Quiet Devotion / Painful Awareness / Fiercely Protective) True Thought: I’m a monster now.

My arm is rot and shadow.

But she looked at me first when we landed.

That’s enough.

That’s more than I deserve.

Roxanne stared at the four men gathered around her in the quiet, ruined sanctuary.

Ethan was watching her with raw, exposed devotion, his bloody hands resting on his knees.

Alistair was carefully wrapping the linen tape around her knuckles, his large thumb lingering over her skin just a second too long.

Lucifer was watching her with a predatory, intensely intrigued smile from a few feet away.

And Malakai was sitting right beside her, his shoulders practically touching hers, his dark presence a grounding weight against the cold floor.

Even Julian, lying unconscious nearby, was breathing steadily, his face finally peaceful now that the dragon shadow had retreated.

Roxanne let out a long, shuddering breath, her eyes practically drooping shut.

“Listen here, you useless disaster squad,” she rasped, her voice thick with exhaustion.

“I am not moving another inch.

I am covered in grease, my dress feels like an oily rag, and if I don’t get a bath and five hours of sleep right fucking now, I am going to murder all four of you in your sleep.” Alistair looked up from her hand, a rare, faint softening around his eyes.

“The temple inner quarters were protected by divine wards.

They’re intact.

There are clean baths and royal guest rooms.” “Then carry me or move out of my way,” Roxanne snapped, though her head was already heavily tilting sideways.

Without a second word, Alistair slid one arm beneath her knees and the other around her back, effortlessly scooping her up into his arms like she weighed nothing at all.

Roxanne was too damn tired to kick him.

She simply let her head drop against his heavy armor shoulder, her eyes instantly slipping shut as the warmth of his cloak wrapped around her like a blanket.

As Alistair carried her toward the inner corridors, Lucifer casually trailed behind, while Ethan supported a staggering Malakai, and two Imperial guards were summoned to carry the unconscious prince.

An hour later, the silence of the temple’s private bathhouse was blissfully quiet.

Roxanne washed off the layers of soot, dragon grease, and silver ash in hot, steaming spring water, scrubbing her skin until it was raw and pink.

When she stepped out, she absolutely refused to touch another torn, frilly aristocratic gown.

Instead, she looted the guest wardrobe, throwing on a simple, crisp white cotton tunic shirt that fell down to her mid-thighs, loose navy drawstring pants, and a soft silver silk robe left open over her shoulders.

It was oversized, completely un-princess-like, and wonderfully comfortable.

She stumbled into the master guest chamber, barely making it to the massive, velvet-draped four-poster bed before her knees gave out.

She collapsed face-first onto the pile of silk pillows, wrapping the heavy blanket around herself like a burrito.

Within seconds, her mind drifted off into the deepest, sweetest sleep she’d had since dying in her past life.

*CRACK.* Her eyes snapped open.

It wasn’t a monster.

It wasn’t an explosion.

The heavy oak door to her private bedchamber hadn’t been kicked in, it had been silently picked.

Standing in the faint, silvery moonlight spilling through the window were two distinct figures who had clearly snuck past Alistair’s guards posted in the hallway outside.

Malakai, holding a quiet daggers-edge to the door latch, stepped silently into the room, his shadow magic completely masking his footsteps.

And right behind him, gliding in with a amused, predatory quiet, was Lucifer, carrying a glass of dark wine.

Roxanne sat up in bed, her fresh white shirt collar falling slightly off one shoulder, her messy dark hair sticking up in every direction as she glared at them through bleary eyes.

“Are you two fucking insane?!” Roxanne whispered-yelled, clutching the blanket to her chest.

“I’ve been asleep for like twenty minutes!

Get the fuck out of my bedroom!” Malakai smirked, closing the door behind them with a soft click, his amber eyes trailing slowly down her comfortable, oversized shirt before rising back to her face.

“Relax, sweetheart.

We’re not here to fight.” Lucifer took a slow sip of his wine, his gaze locking onto her bare collarbone with an unhurried, dangerous intensity.

“We simply realized…

the Commander and the Priest are currently arguing in the hall over who gets to guard your door.” The Demon Lord leaned against the bedpost, tilting his head.

“And we prefer to negotiate without an audience.”
