Lena could tell from her breathing, which hadn’t yet found the slow rhythm of sleep, and from her fingers, tracing idle circles on her stomach.

Their kiss had ended a few minutes ago, but neither of them had said a word.

The room was warm, the lamplight low, and the villa so quiet that Lena could hear water trickling into the pond in the garden.

“Lena,” Yuki whispered.

“I’m here.”

“I’ve…

I’ve never done it before.” Her fingers stopped.

“I’d never even kissed anyone before tonight.”

Lena turned onto her side to look at her.

Yuki’s cheeks glowed red even in the half-dark.

“Me neither,” she admitted.

Yuki blinked.

“Really?

You?

But you’re…

like this.”

“Until yesterday, I wasn’t like this,” Lena said with a small laugh.

“Until yesterday, I was a girl who served coffee and nobody noticed.

I’ve never touched anyone.

And nobody’s ever touched me.”

Yuki looked at her for a long time.

Then she rose up on her elbow, and her black hair fell like a curtain around their faces.

“Then…” She swallowed.

“Then we’ll be each other’s first.”

It wasn’t a question.

It was a decision.

And it was hers.

*Ding.*

[Yuki Sato has made a decision.]

Lena didn’t look at the screen.

She looked only at Yuki.

“Are you sure?” she asked.

“We don’t have to rush.

We have all the time in the world.”

“I’m sure.” Yuki’s voice trembled, but her eyes didn’t.

“I don’t know how to explain it.

I’ve only known you a few hours.

But when I opened the door and saw you, it felt like I’d been waiting for you my whole life.” She smiled shyly.

“That sounds like something out of one of my books, huh?”

“It sounds perfect,” Lena said, and kissed her.

This time, the kiss wasn’t hesitant.

Yuki leaned over her, and her body, small and warm, fit against Lena’s like a puzzle piece.

Lena’s hands slid slowly down her back, traced her spine, paused at her waist.

Yuki shivered all over and let out a tiny sound into the kiss, a sound Lena wanted to hear again immediately.

She heard it again when her lips moved down to Yuki’s neck.

And again, louder, when they moved lower still, to her breasts.

“Lena…” Yuki’s fingers tangled in her hair.

“That…

that’s…”

“Do you want me to stop?”

“No.

Don’t stop.

Please.”

They didn’t rush.

Neither of them knew what she was doing, and that was the most beautiful part.

They learned each other the way you learn a new street in a strange city: searching, making mistakes, laughing at the mistakes, trying again.

Yuki laughed out loud when Lena found a spot that tickled her, just above her hip.

Lena blushed for the first time that night when Yuki’s hands, bolder now, touched her where no one had ever touched her before.

“You’re so warm,” Yuki whispered in wonder, as if discovering something from her books.

Lena couldn’t answer.

Her breath had caught.

Her new body was sensitive in a way she had never imagined.

Every touch from Yuki sent waves of fire up her spine.

She caught her wrist gently.

“Wait,” she said, her voice hoarse.

“If you keep doing that, I won’t last.”

Yuki smiled, a new smile, bolder, one Lena hadn’t seen on her yet.

“Then you hold me,” she said, and lay back against the pillows, reaching her arms up toward her.

Lena rose above her, propped on her elbows, and looked down at her.

Yuki’s hair was spread across the white pillow like ink on paper.

Her lips were swollen from kissing.

Her chest rose and fell quickly.

“It might hurt a little, I think,” Lena said softly.

“If you want to stop, at any moment, just say so.”

“I’ll say so.” Yuki wrapped her arms around her neck.

“But I won’t.”

They went slowly.

Very slowly.

Yuki squeezed her eyes shut and dug her fingers into Lena’s shoulders, and for a moment neither of them breathed.

Lena held perfectly still, kissing her eyelids, her cheeks, the corner of her mouth, whispering her name again and again.

“Are you okay?”

Yuki opened her eyes.

They were wet, but she was smiling.

“Yes,” she breathed.

“I’m…

I’m really okay.

Don’t be scared.

Keep going.”

And the pain faded, and what came after had no name in any language they knew.

They moved together, clumsy at first and then more and more naturally, as if remembering something they’d forgotten.

Yuki clung to Lena’s back, her legs wrapped around her waist, and every sound that left her lips was Lena’s name, broken into pieces.

Lena had lost all sense of time, of the room, of the world.

There was only the heat, Yuki beneath her, her eyes that never left hers for a second.

When the wave took them, it took them almost together.

Yuki cried out, loudly, then hid her face in Lena’s shoulder, embarrassed and laughing at the same time.

Lena trembled all over, forehead pressed to hers, unable to speak.

*Ding.*

Lena closed the screen.

She didn’t need it to know.

She could see it in Yuki’s eyes, which looked at her as if she were the whole world.

They stayed wrapped around each other for a long time, in the tangled sheets, until their breathing calmed.

“I didn’t know it could be like that,” Yuki said finally, her head back on Lena’s chest.

“In books, they always write it like something…

more distant.

More poetic.”

“It wasn’t poetic?”

Yuki laughed.

“I hit my head on the headboard.”

“Twice,” Lena agreed.

“And you were lying on my hair.”

“Sorry.”

“It was perfect,” Yuki whispered.

“It was the most perfect thing that’s ever happened to me.”

Lena kissed the top of her head.

Then she reached over to the nightstand and picked up something she’d left there earlier, when they’d handed her the villa’s paperwork.

A small silver key on a ring with a cherry blossom charm.

She placed it in Yuki’s palm and closed her fingers over it.

“What’s this?”

“The key to the house,” Lena said.

“Our house.

I want you to have it.

No matter what happens, no matter who comes, this is your home too.

Forever.”

Yuki looked at the key.

Her lips trembled.

“Forever?”

“Forever.”

Yuki pressed it to her chest, the way she had held the Kawabata novel when she opened the door of 304, except now it wasn’t a shield.

It was a treasure.

“I’ll never leave you,” she said.

“Never, Lena.

I promise.”

And she fell asleep like that, naked on Lena’s chest, the key clutched in her fist.

Lena stayed awake a little longer, stroking her hair.

*Interesting,* Lena thought, and drifted off smiling.

Morning poured into the room through the enormous windows, golden and warm.

Lena woke with Yuki still curled on top of her and the scent of her hair everywhere.

They stayed in bed much longer than they should have.

When they finally got up, Yuki walked a little funny and blushed every time Lena noticed.

“Don’t look at me like that,” she mumbled, hiding her face behind her coffee mug.

“Like what?”

“Like you’re proud of yourself.”

“I am,” Lena said, and Yuki threw a pillow at her.

After breakfast, Lena pulled Ayaka’s card out of her bag.

“Today,” she announced, “we’re going shopping.”

“Shopping?” Yuki looked down at her baggy gray sweater.

“I don’t need—”

“You do.

And I need clothes for school.

Classes start tomorrow.”

Ayaka answered on the first ring.

When she heard Lena’s voice, she went silent for two seconds, just like at the boutique.

“I’ll close the shop for you,” she said.

“The whole day.”

They took a taxi, because Yuki looked at the Ninja as if it were a dragon.

The Ginza boutique was empty, a little “Closed for Private Appointment” sign on the door, champagne in an ice bucket, and Ayaka waiting for them in a dress that made her waist look even slimmer than yesterday.

Ayaka’s eyes went to Lena first, then to Yuki, who was holding Lena’s hand.

Something passed over her face, a small shadow, and then it was gone.

“Welcome,” she said, more calmly this time.

“Tell me what you’d like.”

“For her,” Lena said, nodding at Yuki, “whatever she likes.

Anything she looks at for more than two seconds, we’re taking.”

“Lena!”

“For me, clothes for university.

Skirts.

Only skirts.”

Ayaka raised an eyebrow.

“And for the cold days?”

“Thicker skirts,” Lena said, and Ayaka laughed for the first time, a real, surprised laugh.

The next hour was a whirlwind of fabric and color.

Yuki, who at first stood in the corner like a lost kitten, slowly started trying things on.

A cream knit dress.

A pale blue shirt.

A dark green skirt that suited her so perfectly that Lena whistled when she put it on, and Yuki ducked back into the fitting room out of embarrassment.

Lena picked out an entire school wardrobe for herself.

Pleated skirts in black, gray, plaid, and navy.

A leather mini for motorcycle days.

White shirts, knit vests, a long camel coat for winter, black knee-high socks, and patent leather shoes.

Every outfit more elegant than the last, and every outfit with a skirt.

At the end, Ayaka stood behind her in front of the big mirror, straightening the collar of her shirt.

Her fingers lingered on Lena’s neck a second longer than necessary.

“You’ll be the most beautiful girl at the entire University of Tokyo,” she said softly to the mirror.

“And you’ll be the only one who knows what I’m wearing underneath,” Lena said with a smile.

Ayaka blushed all the way down to her neckline.

[Ayaka Mori, 29 | Attraction: MAX | Relationship: Friend]

Yuki stepped out of the fitting room at that moment, in the dark green skirt, and saw them.

She didn’t look angry.

Just a little thoughtful.

When Ayaka went to the register, she came over and took Lena’s hand.

“She likes you,” she whispered.

“I know.”

“Will…

will she come live with us someday too?”

Lena studied her carefully.

“Would you mind?”

Yuki thought about it.

She pulled the silver key with the cherry blossom out of her pocket and looked at it.

“No,” she said at last.

“I was the first.

And I have the key.” She smiled.

“That doesn’t change, right?”

“Never,” Lena said.

They returned to the villa in the afternoon, the taxi stuffed with bags and a delivery truck from the boutique following with the rest.

Yuki filled half the closet with her new clothes and the other half with books, because the library was still empty.

That evening, Lena hung her outfit for the first day on the closet door.

A black pleated skirt.

A white shirt.

Black knee-high socks.

And nothing else underneath.

Lena smiled and switched off the light.

Yuki was already in bed, naked under the sheets, the key on the nightstand beside her.

When Lena lay down, she came to her at once and rested her head on Lena’s chest, in her place.

“Tomorrow’s the big day,” she murmured.

“Tomorrow,” Lena agreed.

Outside, Tokyo glittered.

And somewhere out there, in Hongo, a university full of girls was waiting, without knowing a thing.
