Assessment Day.
At 5:40 AM, the lights in the A University library in Beijing were blazing.
The self-study area, which should have been deserted at this hour, was currently occupied by a dozen people, top students from various departments who had volunteered to accompany Xia Yaojin for her final sprint.
Chen Mo from the Physics Department was organizing formula cards. Su Qing from Chemistry was checking experimental steps. Zhao Mingyu from Biology was silently reciting technical terminology. Zhang Ming from Computer Science was debugging a simulation program and Wang Zhe from Math was… building a mathematical model for pre-exam anxiety.
“According to historical data, Jinjin’s sleep duration decreases by 23% in the 48 hours before a major exam, but her cognitive efficiency actually increases by 15%…” Wang Zhe pushed up his glasses, scribbling in his notebook.
“Can you stop analyzing?” Chen Mo said with a headache. “I get nervous just looking at formulas now.”
“This is science,” Wang Zhe replied solemnly.
Xia Yaojin sat in the middle of them, seven notebooks from different disciplines spread out before her. Her eyes scanned the pages rapidly, her right hand unconsciously twirling a pen.
She had been reading continuously for three hours. From 2:00 AM until now, she had barely looked up.
“Jinjin, take a break.” Su Qing handed over a cup of warm water.
“Thanks.” Xia Yaojin took it and took a small sip, her eyes still glued to the pages.
“Did you eat breakfast?” Chen Mo asked.
Xia Yaojin looked up blankly: “…Breakfast?”
Everyone exchanged a “just as I thought” look.
“I knew she’d forget,” Zhao Mingyu sighed. “I’ll go to the cafeteria and buy—”
“No need.”
A familiar voice came from the doorway.
Zhu Yawen walked in carrying an exquisite multi-layered lunch box. Her long hair was tied loosely behind her head, and though she wore no makeup, she was beautiful enough to make it hard to look away.
She walked straight to Xia Yaojin’s side and placed the lunch box on the table: “I brought breakfast.”
The lunch box opened, the first layer held steaming soup dumplings (xiao long bao), the second held golden fried eggs and bacon, the third was fresh fruit slices, and the fourth was warmed milk.
The aroma instantly filled the entire self-study area.
Xia Yaojin’s stomach gave an uncooperative “growl.”
Her face flushed, but she still didn’t put down her pen: “I… I’ll read a bit more.”
“No.” Zhu Yawen’s attitude was a rare display of firmness. “Eat first.”
She picked up the chopsticks, grabbed a soup dumpling, and naturally moved it to Xia Yaojin’s lips: “Open up.”
The self-study area went instantly silent.
Everyone stopped what they were doing, their eyes wide and round.
Xia Yaojin was also stunned. She looked at the dumpling near her mouth, then at Zhu Yawen’s serious expression, and her brain crashed again.
“The assessment starts at nine. You need to replenish your energy now, not keep consuming it.” Zhu Yawen’s voice was gentle but brook no refusal. “Be good, eat first before reading.”
Xia Yaojin’s gaze shifted between Zhu Yawen and the dumpling for five seconds, and then she actually opened her mouth.
Zhu Yawen smiled and fed the bun into her mouth, her movements as gentle as if she were taking care of something fragile.
Xia Yaojin chewed mechanically, her eyes still on her notebook, but her cheeks had taken on a faint pink hue.
“Have some milk.” Zhu Yawen picked up the warm milk cup and held it to her lips.
This time Xia Yaojin didn’t hesitate; she took a sip right from her hand.
A white milk stain remained at the corner of her mouth, but she was completely unaware, still muttering to herself: “There seems to be a problem with the derivation of this formula…”
Looking at her serious profile and that bit of milk on her lip, Zhu Yawen’s gaze turned so soft it could practically melt.
She put down the cup, pulled out a tissue, and gently wiped the milk from Xia Yaojin’s mouth.
The movement was so natural and so tender that Xia Yaojin didn’t even realize what had happened, still frowning as she pondered the formula.
Meanwhile, the others in the self-study area were practically suffocating.
Chen Mo’s phone hit the floor with a “clatter.”
Su Qing covered her mouth.
Zhao Mingyu’s glasses slid to the tip of his nose.
Zhang Ming wrote a line of code wrong.
Wang Zhe’s mathematical model… completely collapsed.
“I… I’m going to get some air.” Chen Mo was the first to stand up, stumbling his way out.
“Me too!” The others hurriedly followed.
Thirty seconds later, only Zhu Yawen and Xia Yaojin were left in the self-study area.
Xia Yaojin finally figured out the formula and nodded with satisfaction. She looked up only to find everyone was gone.
“Where are they?”
“Maybe they went to prepare for the exam,” Zhu Yawen said without a flicker of emotion, picking up a piece of fried egg. “Have some more.”
Xia Yaojin obediently opened her mouth, her eyes drifting back to the notebook.
Zhu Yawen patiently finished feeding her breakfast and watched her drink half the cup of milk before finally packing up the lunch box with satisfaction.
“Alright, you can read now,” she said. “But you must stop at 8:30. Rest for half an hour before entering the exam hall.”
“…Okay.”
Xia Yaojin buried her head back in the books, and Zhu Yawen sat quietly beside her, keeping her company.
Outside the window, the morning light gradually brightened.

15th Floor (President Su himself): Approved. Also, the photos were well-taken; remember to send me the original files.
16th Floor (Everyone): THE PRESIDENT IS WISE!!!
Inside the library, Xia Yaojin finally put down her pen.
At 8:29 AM, she concluded her review right on schedule.
“Finished?” Zhu Yawen asked.
“Yes, I’ve covered everything I could.” Xia Yaojin rubbed her eyes, showing a rare trace of exhaustion.
“Nervous?”
Xia Yaojin thought for a moment and shook her head: “Not nervous. I’ve prepared everything that needs preparing, the rest I’ll leave to my ability.”
Zhu Yawen smiled: “That’s the Xia Yaojin I know.”
She took a small box out of her bag: “This is for you.”
Xia Yaojin opened it. Inside was a brand-new fountain pen. The body was deep blue with tiny silver specks, like a night sky.
“An exam pen. I wish for your writing to be inspired, as if guided by the gods,” Zhu Yawen said.
Xia Yaojin picked up the pen, it had an excellent feel and moderate weight. She tested it on some scratch paper, the ink flowed smoothly and the handwriting was crisp.
“Is it expensive?” she asked.
“Not expensive. What matters is that it’s easy to use.” Zhu Yawen paused. “And… I wanted to give you something to cheer you on.”
Xia Yaojin looked at her for a long time before whispering, “Thank you. I like it very much.”
She carefully tucked the fountain pen into her pencil case along with her other exam supplies.
“Let’s go, it’s time to head to the exam hall.” Zhu Yawen stood up.
The two walked out of the library together. The morning sun spilled over the campus, making everything look vibrant and full of life.
A large crowd had already gathered outside the exam hall not just examinees, but many students who had come spontaneously to cheer her on.
Seeing Xia Yaojin and Zhu Yawen appear together, the crowd erupted into suppressed cheers.
“Go, Jinjin!”
“Wenwen is with her! There’s definitely no problem!”
“Top student for the win!”
Xia Yaojin felt a bit embarrassed, but more than that, she was moved.
Zhu Yawen walked her to the entrance of the exam hall and gave her a brief hug, a fleeting embrace that broke as soon as they touched.
“Good luck,” she whispered into Xia Yaojin’s ear. “I’ll be here waiting for you.”
“Okay.” Xia Yaojin nodded and turned to walk into the hall.
Her back was straight, her steps firm.
Zhu Yawen stood at the door, watching her disappear at the end of the hallway, the smile on her lips lingering for a long time. The surrounding students wanted to swarm over but didn’t dare disturb her, only watching from afar with faces full of “I’m shipping this” excitement.
Meanwhile, on the forum…

10th Floor (Entire School): Can’t wait!!!
Inside the hall, Xia Yaojin sat in her seat, checking her stationery.
That deep blue fountain pen lay quietly on the desk, shimmering with fine light under the sun. She picked it up, feeling its weight and texture, a wave of warmth rising in her heart.
The proctor began distributing the exam papers.
Xia Yaojin took a deep breath and unscrewed the pen cap.
The assessment had begun.
Outside, Zhu Yawen sat on a bench under the shade of a tree, took out her laptop, and began working. From time to time, she looked up toward the exam hall, her gaze tender. The sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled shadows over her.
This morning, because of a feeding gesture, a fountain pen, and a hug, had become exceptionally warm.
The entirety of A University was waiting for one person’s triumphant return.
Waiting for the top student who created miracles.
Waiting for the girl who finally began to accept the kindness of others.
Waiting for the future that belonged to Xia Yaojin.
Time ticked away, second by second.
The story continues.
That was a very heartwarming conclusion to the “pre-exam” phase! The school president jumping into the forum drama was a great touch.
