Gu Jing Shen gently laid Su Jin Yue down on the bed before reaching out to touch her forehead.
The moment he felt the scorching heat beneath his fingertips, his expression darkened.
“Jin Yue?” Su Jin Yue’s lashes fluttered slightly, but she did not wake.
Her usually fair face was flushed from the fever, her lips slightly dry, and even her breathing had become heavier than usual.
Gu Jing Shen immediately took out his phone and called Qin Hao.
Qin Hao was a doctor, as well as an old friend from Gu Jing Shen’s hometown whom he had known for many years.
Although the two did not see each other often, they had always remained fairly close.
The call connected almost immediately, and Qin Hao’s sleepy voice came from the other end.
“Jing Shen?
What’s going on?” “Come over to my place.” Qin Hao froze.
Glancing at the clock, he realized that it was not even eight in the morning.
“What happened to you?” “My wife has a fever.
She just passed out.” There was a sudden silence on the other end.
A few seconds later, Qin Hao’s voice rose in disbelief.
“Wait!
What did you just say?” Gu Jing Shen frowned.
“My wife has a fever.” “You have a wife?” Qin Hao sounded as though he could not believe his ears.
He immediately bombarded him with questions.
“When did you get married?
Why didn’t I know?
Who is she?
How did you two meet?” Gu Jing Shen had absolutely no mood to explain.
“I’ll tell you when you get here.” “No!
At least you have to tell me…” Before Qin Hao could finish, Gu Jing Shen had already hung up.
Qin Hao stared at the darkened screen, his curiosity growing by the second.
Gu Jing Shen was actually married?
And he had kept it such a secret that even Qin Hao, his longtime friend, had been completely unaware.
Less than twenty minutes later, the doorbell of Gu Jing Shen’s apartment rang.
He immediately went to answer it.
Qin Hao stepped inside carrying his medical bag, his face still filled with curiosity.
“Where’s your wife?” “In the room.” Qin Hao followed Gu Jing Shen into the spare bedroom.
But the moment he saw the woman lying on the bed, he stopped dead in his tracks.
That face… There was something incredibly familiar about it.
Qin Hao stood there for several seconds, his gaze fixed on Su Jin Yue’s flushed face as he desperately searched his memory.
He was certain he had seen this woman somewhere before, but for some reason, he simply could not remember where.
“Why does she look so familiar…?” Qin Hao murmured under his breath, his brows drawing together.
He stepped closer and carefully studied Su Jin Yue.
Even while unconscious with a fever, her delicate features and refined air were impossible to conceal.
The more he looked at her, the stronger that sense of familiarity became.
Then, all of a sudden, a name flashed through Qin Hao’s mind.
“Su Jin Yue?” Qin Hao abruptly turned toward Gu Jing Shen in shock.
“Don’t tell me… she’s Su Jin Yue, the eldest daughter of the Su family?” Gu Jing Shen remained standing beside the bed, showing no intention of offering a lengthy explanation.
“Yeah.” That single word was enough to leave Qin Hao staring at him in disbelief.
He turned to look at the woman on the bed, then back at Gu Jing Shen, his expression as though he had just discovered something completely unbelievable.
He lowered his voice, but the astonishment in it was impossible to hide.
“She really is Miss Su?” “Yeah.” “You’re saying she’s your wife?” Gu Jing Shen gave a slight nod.
Qin Hao fell silent for several seconds.
Then he could not help blurting out, “Jing Shen, how on earth did you manage to marry her?” Gu Jing Shen said nothing.
Qin Hao still refused to let it go.
“The Su family and your family have never had much of a connection, and your social standing is worlds apart.
To put it bluntly, you’re practically a toad that somehow managed to eat the swan.” As he spoke, Qin Hao could not resist looking Gu Jing Shen up and down.
“You really kept this hidden well.” Gu Jing Shen shot him a cold look.
“Are you done?” Qin Hao immediately fell silent, although the curiosity in his eyes remained.
Gu Jing Shen paid him no further attention and urged, “Examine her first.” “Fine.” Seeing how serious Gu Jing Shen was, Qin Hao stopped joking.
He set his medical bag down and began examining Su Jin Yue.
After checking her temperature, examining her throat, listening to her lungs, and asking Gu Jing Shen about the symptoms she had experienced earlier, Qin Hao finally removed his stethoscope.
“It’s nothing serious.” Gu Jing Shen immediately asked, “You’re sure?” “Yeah.
It’s just an ordinary case of the flu.
She probably hasn’t been getting enough rest these past few days, and the chill made her body weaker, which led to the fever and fainting.” As he spoke, Qin Hao took out his prescription pad.
“Have her take the medicine I prescribe, get plenty of rest, and drink lots of water.
Keep monitoring her temperature throughout the day.
If the fever doesn’t come down or she develops any unusual symptoms, take her to the hospital.” Gu Jing Shen nodded.
“I understand.” After writing out the prescription and giving a few more instructions, Qin Hao packed up his medical supplies.
But just as he lifted his bag, he remembered the question that had been bothering him most.
He turned back to Gu Jing Shen.
“But…” Gu Jing Shen looked at him.
“What now?” “I still don’t understand.” Qin Hao leaned against the table, his face once again filled with curiosity.
“How exactly did you manage to marry Su Jin Yue?” “…” “She is the heiress of the Su family.
The two of you aren’t even remotely from the same social background, yet she’s now your wife.
It’s really hard to believe.” Gu Jing Shen calmly adjusted the blanket over Su Jin Yue.
“It’s a long story.
I’ll tell you when I have time.” “Tell me now.” “You think I look like I have nothing better to do?” Qin Hao was speechless.
He stared at Gu Jing Shen’s completely unfazed expression and could only shake his head helplessly.
“All right.
I’ll wait.” “See yourself out.
I’m not walking you out.” “You really are heartless.
I just finished treating your wife, and now you’re kicking me out.” Qin Hao picked up his medical bag and headed for the door, but before leaving, he still could not resist turning back to look at Gu Jing Shen.
“But I’m definitely going to hear the story of how you managed to marry Su Jin Yue.” Gu Jing Shen waved a hand dismissively, shooing him away.
Qin Hao left with a resigned expression.
The room fell silent once more.
Gu Jing Shen turned his gaze toward Su Jin Yue.
Seeing that she was still lost in unconsciousness, he pulled the blanket a little higher over her before sitting down beside the bed.
Outside the window, the morning sunlight remained soft and gentle.
But today, Gu Jing Shen had put all his work aside.
