In the middle of the night, Su Jin Yue slowly woke from her feverish sleep.

Her fever seemed to have gone down considerably.

Her head was still a little heavy, and her body felt weak, but the unbearable heat she had felt earlier was finally gone.Full novel: Turns out, he always loved me — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

She slowly opened her eyes.

The soft, yellow light from the bedside lamp cast a hazy glow over everything around her.

Instinctively, she turned her head to the side, only to freeze in surprise.

Gu Jing Shen was sitting on the chair beside her bed.

His body was slightly hunched forward, one hand resting on the armrest while the other still held an unfinished book.

Perhaps he had waited beside her for too long and had fallen asleep without realizing it.

His usually cold and distant face looked strangely peaceful at this moment.

The dim light softened the sharp lines of his features, taking away some of his usual aloofness.

Su Jin Yue stared at him for a long while, surprise slowly filling her heart.

She had never expected Gu Jing Shen to be the one taking care of her.

A strange feeling briefly surfaced in her heart, but she quickly reminded herself that they were only husband and wife in name.

Gu Jing Shen might have stayed to look after her simply because it was his responsibility.

There was no reason for her to read too much into it.

Just then, Gu Jing Shen’s phone suddenly began to vibrate, startling him awake.

He frowned slightly, reached for his phone, and instinctively glanced toward the bed.

For some reason, Su Jin Yue immediately closed her eyes and pretended to be asleep.

Gu Jing Shen looked at her for a few seconds.

Seeing that she remained still, he finally stood up, took his phone, and walked out of the room.

The door closed behind him, and the room fell silent once more.

Su Jin Yue slowly opened her eyes.

She had never intended to eavesdrop, but the room was so quiet that Gu Jing Shen’s voice outside still carried faintly into the bedroom.

“It’s me.” Those two simple words made Su Jin Yue’s eyes widen slightly.

It’s me?

There was something strangely intimate about the way he had said it.

She couldn’t hear what the person on the other end was saying, but she could clearly hear Gu Jing Shen’s low voice in the quiet of the night.

“Why are you still awake this late?” The person on the other end said something, and Gu Jing Shen remained silent for a few seconds.

When he spoke again, his voice had softened, completely different from his usual cold and distant tone.

“We’ll talk about it tomorrow.” He leaned against the wall, his gaze unconsciously drifting toward the half-closed bedroom door.

He listened silently as the person on the other end said a few more words before letting out a quiet sigh.

“Okay.

I promise.

I’ll come see you tomorrow.

Now be a good girl and go to sleep.” Su Jin Yue lay on the bed, her expression gradually becoming complicated.

Who was calling him in the middle of the night?

And judging from the way he was speaking, the two of them seemed to know each other very well.

More importantly, it was most likely a woman.

Su Jin Yue frowned slightly.

If it really was another woman, then what exactly was her relationship with Gu Jing Shen?

A friend?

A business associate?

Or something more?

But soon, Su Jin Yue couldn’t help laughing at herself.

What am I even thinking?

Whether Gu Jing Shen had another woman had nothing to do with her.

From the very beginning, the terms of their marriage had been made clear.

Neither of them was required to have feelings for the other, and neither had the right to interfere with the other’s private life.

She didn’t love him, and he had never said that he loved her either.

Even if Gu Jing Shen really had another woman, she had no right to feel jealous.

But the two of them were still legally married.

If he really was involved with another woman, she should at least know about it.

Not because she cared.

She simply didn’t want it to become a source of trouble between them later.

Especially if that woman knew that Gu Jing Shen was already married and still continued seeing him, things could become very complicated.

A while later, she heard footsteps approaching.

The door opened, and Gu Jing Shen walked back into the room.

He glanced at Su Jin Yue lying on the bed before placing his phone on the table.

Perhaps thinking that she was still asleep, he said nothing.

He simply pulled the blanket over her and returned to the chair beside the bed.

Su Jin Yue closed her eyes, but this time, she couldn’t fall asleep.

Her mind was filled with all kinds of possibilities about the woman who had just spoken to Gu Jing Shen on the phone.

The next morning, Su Jin Yue woke to sunlight streaming through the curtains.

Her fever had completely subsided.

She sat up and touched her forehead.

When she realized that her body was no longer burning, she finally breathed a sigh of relief.

After changing her clothes, she stepped out of the bedroom.

The delicious aroma of food immediately drifted toward her, making her pause in surprise.

In the kitchen, Gu Jing Shen was preparing breakfast.

He was wearing a light gray dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

Several dishes were already waiting on the table.

Hearing the movement, he turned around.

His gaze lingered on Su Jin Yue for a few seconds before he asked, “You’re up?” “Yeah.” Su Jin Yue nodded.

Gu Jing Shen studied her complexion and asked, “How are you feeling?” “Much better.” “Still dizzy?

Any headache?” “No.” He nodded.

“That’s good.” Su Jin Yue pulled out a chair and sat down.

Gu Jing Shen brought over the last dish before taking the seat opposite her.

The two of them began eating breakfast.

The atmosphere was quieter than usual.

Su Jin Yue lowered her head and ate a few bites.

In the end, she couldn’t hold back any longer.

“Gu Jing Shen.” “Hmm?” Su Jin Yue looked up at him.

Her gaze lingered on his calm face for a few seconds before she slowly said, “Even though our marriage is only a contract, you have your own life and I have mine.

But I think you should still be a little more discreet.” Gu Jing Shen put down his chopsticks and looked directly at her.

After a few seconds of silence, he spoke in a calm voice tinged with confusion.

“If you have something to say, just say it.

Stop beating around the bush.” Su Jin Yue froze slightly.

After a brief silence, she continued, “Even though we’re husband and wife in name only, I think we should still respect each other’s dignity.

Don’t you agree?” Gu Jing Shen looked at her, his gaze deepening slightly.

“Are you saying I’m doing something that’s embarrassing you?” His question left Su Jin Yue momentarily at a loss for words.

She awkwardly tried to cover her tracks.

“I just wanted to remind you in advance.” Gu Jing Shen picked up his chopsticks again.

His voice was calm, but there was an unmistakable certainty in it.

“Don’t worry.

I won’t do anything that would embarrass Miss Su.”
