“Phew… that got my heart racing…”
It all happened so suddenly that he didn’t even have time to ready his bow, but by making full use of his skills, Ren managed to defeat the magical beast and let out a relieved sigh.
It wasn’t the method he had originally planned, but he was still happy that he had managed to hunt a magical beast. Still, he hadn’t given up on defeating one with his bow.
Staying alert for magical beasts, he repeated a cycle—gathering Mana Berry leaves when he found them, and drawing his bow whenever he sensed movement or presence nearby.
As a result, he managed to land an arrow on a second horn rabbit. Though the finishing blow ended up being delivered with the small box, the fact that he had successfully hit two horn rabbits with arrows was a huge achievement for him.
“Even I… can fight… I can fight without a bow skill… If it were Ryan-niiue, who has the bow skill, he’d probably take down a horn rabbit in a single shot…”
Since childhood, he had trained with both bow and sword. All the boys of the Cream baronial house were taught from a young age, partly in hopes of acquiring combat skills, but also to protect themselves, their family, and their people from magical beasts.
Not gaining a combat skill had disappointed his parents—or so he believed.
Even so, when he shot a bow, he could still hit targets fairly well. Just because he lacked the bow skill didn’t mean he was completely incapable of using one.
He found that strange, but when he thought about how his eldest brother Ryan—who did have the Archery skill—could easily hit the bullseye every time, Ren figured the difference was probably just between being “really skilled” and “somewhat skilled.”
So as long as he wasn’t completely helpless with a bow, he wanted to make it a viable way to defeat magical beasts.
“Alright. Time to head back.”
After storing the second horn rabbit and the gathered Mana Berry leaves inside the small box, Ren turned back toward the village.
“Oh? No luck today?”
“Huh?”
As he was about to show his apprentice adventurer tag at the village gate, one of the guards called out to him.
“Well, things don’t always go your way. Better luck next time.”
After checking his tag, the guard gave him a friendly pat on the shoulder, and that’s when Ren realized—
(Ah! They think I came back empty-handed…)
The horn rabbits, the three-eyed eagle, and the Mana Berry leaves—everything was stored away inside the “small box.” That meant Ren looked just as light and unburdened as when he had first left the village. Even his bow was inside the box.
(…Wait, if I bring out a horn rabbit at the guild when I didn’t have anything with me, won’t that seem suspicious? …Huh? When am I supposed to take things out of the box…?)
Ren didn’t want others to see his “Small Box” skill. He still couldn’t forget the disappointed expressions on his parents’ faces during the Blessing Ceremony when he first received it.
He believed the skill had become more useful since then, but it still wasn’t a combat skill—and he didn’t want to be mocked for it.
(…Come to think of it, how am I supposed to take things out at the guild?)
Not having to carry heavy loads was convenient, but now he realized a problem—he couldn’t just casually summon the “small box” in front of others at the Adventurers’ Guild when it was time to turn in his materials.
