Zombies were unlike humans; they didn’t know how to walk down stairs.

The current zombies were all of the lowest level, so when David Sinclair reached the top of the stairs, he tumbled straight down.

Rolling all the way to the first floor, he ignored the pain and immediately crawled toward the people still standing at the door.Full novel: Waiting Out the Apocalypse in Luxury — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

His guttural roars filled everyone’s ears.

On the third floor, Sean Kane heard the commotion as well.

Just as he was about to head down, Caleb Grant stopped him.

“Ginny Jarvis will handle it.

If you go down now, you might draw the zombie back up.”

Hearing this, Sean stayed put on the third floor.

Once David stumbled out of the villa and into the yard, Ginny turned to Cecilia Sinclair.

“Say your final goodbyes to your dad.”

Cecilia dropped to her knees, bowing her head to the ground toward David.

“Dad…

WAAH…

Dad…”

But the mutated David showed no reaction whatsoever.

He just kept dragging himself forward, baring his teeth and reaching out, desperate to feast on human blood.

Ginny kept a close eye on the distance between the two of them.

Beside her, Clark Chandler and the other two had already backed away several steps.

It wasn’t until Cecilia knocked her head against the ground for the fourth time that Ginny fired a single shot into David’s temple.

David thrashed twice before his arms dropped.

His limp hand fell right in front of Cecilia’s eyes.

Instantly, she burst into agonizing wails.

Ginny felt incredibly thankful that they had chosen this newly built residential complex.

Aside from them, only four or five other units were occupied, and those were just filled with renovation workers; the actual homeowners hadn’t moved in yet.

This meant the gunshot wouldn’t attract massive hordes of zombies.

Right now, however, Cecilia’s loud cries had drawn over two zombies.

They relentlessly scratched at the gate outside, snarling and roaring.

Everything that happened tonight completely shattered everyone’s worldview.

In the past, they watched zombies in movies and video games for entertainment, even casually critiquing their designs.

Now, faced with real zombies right in front of them, they only felt their scalps tingle with sheer terror.

David’s corpse was already emitting waves of a foul, bloody stench.

Ginny looked at Cecilia, who was hugging David’s hand and crying so hard she was on the verge of collapsing.

Ginny ultimately swallowed the words she had been about to say.

Sean and Caleb came down from upstairs and walked over to Ginny’s side.

Ginny looked at them and said, “Officer Grant…”

“Just Caleb is fine,” Caleb corrected with a frown.

Honestly, the title “Officer Grant” sounded extremely grating to his ears.

“Uh, okay.

You help guard the house.

Sean and I need to go out for a bit.”

“It’s not safe outside.

You two—”

Ginny shook her head.

“We have to go.

There are some things we must settle.”

Hearing this, Caleb didn’t argue further.

However, after a moment of thought, he offered, “I’ll go too.

Sean can drive, and I’ll back you up.”

This time, Ginny didn’t refuse.

Clark watched the group leave and joked to Timmy, “Do you think they just ran off on their own and abandoned us?”

He immediately received an eye roll from Timmy.

“It’s obviously much safer here.”

Clark rubbed the tip of his nose.

He just wanted to crack a joke to lighten the mood.

The atmosphere was simply far too tense right now.

Mason Ryder crouched beside Cecilia, keeping a close eye on her condition.

Half an hour later, Cecilia’s agonizing wails had subsided into silent, tearful sobs.

Mason continuously wiped away her tears and handed her tissues.

“My dad…

what are we…

going to do with his body?” she asked between gasps, looking at the people beside her.

“Miss Kane said to wait until they get back,” someone answered.

“They’ll probably cremate him.

Otherwise, the foul stench will linger.”

“Okay.

You guys go inside.

I’ll stay here with my dad.

This smell…

really isn’t pleasant.

I’m fine, don’t worry!”

Clark quickly interjected, “It’s fine, we’ll stay with—”

Before he could finish, Timmy dragged him inside.

“You idiot, she obviously wants some alone time to say goodbye to Mr.

Sinclair.

Why would you stay outside?” As he spoke, he rapped Clark on the head.

Clark rubbed his head, finally realizing his mistake, and gave Timmy a sheepish grin.

After Mason came inside, he grabbed two throw pillows, went back out to place them beside Cecilia, and only then returned indoors.

Meanwhile, Ginny and her group hadn’t taken the heavy-duty truck from before; instead, they opted for an SUV.

In the car, Ginny stared ahead with a dark expression, remaining completely silent.

Sean was also in low spirits; he knew what they had to face.

In the back seat, Caleb was never one for words to begin with.

The silence in the car was practically terrifying.

After exiting the highway, the number of zombies on the road surged.

The moment they heard the engine, many of them started shambling toward the noise.

Fortunately, these zombies had all just mutated, and Sean drove fast enough to shake off a good number of them.

Still, there were always a few trailing closely behind.

Upon entering the urban district, they saw zombies wandering the streets, cars smashed into one another, and heard the occasional bloodcurdling screams of people being bitten.

The sight sent chills down the spines of the three people in the car, leaving them covered in goosebumps.

Seeing the survivors around them, Ginny and the others were completely powerless to help.

If they got out of the car now, they would be immediately swarmed and eaten alive by the zombies.

As they ventured further into the city center, their progress slowed down significantly.

Their path was constantly blocked by abandoned vehicles in the middle of the road, survivors begging for help, hordes of zombies, and thugs setting up roadblocks to ambush people.

Sean had no choice but to constantly take detours, doing his best to avoid crowded areas.

Each of them was armed with iron rods, steel pipes, or wooden clubs.

Ginny even noticed that the man leading the pack was holding a half-meter-long machete.

“Drive straight through,” Ginny ordered.

As soon as she spoke, Sean slammed on the gas pedal.

It was only when they were right in front of the men that he realized the ground was covered in steel spikes.

He was forced to slam hard on the brakes.

Through the window, Ginny saw the men smiling smugly.

“Boss, there’s a broad inside!

Hahaha, looks like we won’t have to worry about getting lonely, haha…”

The leader stroked his chin, staring lecherously at Ginny in the passenger seat just two meters away.

“Hey gorgeous, why don’t you come down and chat with us?

Haha.” With that, he pointed his machete right at her.

Ginny couldn’t be bothered to waste time.

She opened the sunroof, popped out of the car, and aimed her gun at the sleazy men in front of her.

“B-Boss, that broad’s got a…

a gun!

A gun…” The blonde man next to the leader went weak in the knees at the sight of her weapon, desperately grabbing onto his boss’s shirt hem.

The leader took off his sunglasses, staring in shock at Ginny’s gun.

He felt a wave of fear, but he maintained a tough front.

“Tch, who are you trying to fool?

Trying to scare me with a toy gun?

Heh.

Boys, get ‘er!

Drag that bitch out here!

Once I’m done with her, she’s all yours, haha!”

He started walking forward.

Behind him, a young man wearing glasses saw the situation and wisely stayed put.

Another man with a buzz cut brandished a baseball bat, stepping up to point it at Ginny.

“You stupid bitch, if you know what’s good for you, roll your ass down here and lick our boss’s boots!

Haha!”

Ginny looked at the human trash before her and immediately shot the leader right between the eyes.

“You talk too much.

What a waste of time.”

“AH!

B-Boss…” The buzz-cut man dropped his baseball bat, his legs giving out as he fell to his knees in front of the dead leader, whose eyes were still wide open in shock.

The others were equally horrified.

They were just small-time street thugs; when had they ever seen a scene like this?

Instantly, they all collapsed to their knees, begging for mercy.

A few even threw down their weapons and fled for their lives.

“Clear the steel spikes off the road.” After giving the order, Ginny ducked back through the sunroof and sat down in the passenger seat.

The remaining men hurriedly swept the steel spikes to the side of the road with their bare hands.

Even when the sharp metal sliced their palms, they didn’t dare to stop.

“Let’s go, Sean.”

These low-level grunts were destined to die young anyway.

With only those pathetic weapons in their hands, they’d be completely useless once the zombies evolved.

Sooner or later, they would become zombie chow.
