He believed that they were just unlucky for a while and that the disappearance of their great misfortunes wasn’t because of their engagement, but simply because they didn’t have those misfortunes anymore.
He believed that their engagement just happened to be timed right with when they stopped experiencing life-threatening mishaps, which was why their parents believed the fortuneteller’s words.
Ren certainly thought the same thing as him, as Eli had only seen Ren for the last time on his own eighteenth birthday, and his mom had also mentioned that Ren hadn’t gone back home since then either.
Besides, he and Ren weren’t even as close as his mom claimed.
While they had indeed grown up together since their parents were friends and they were neighbors, they would just end up arguing every time they were together.
They weren’t close at all, so of course they certainly didn’t want to get married to each other just because of the nonsense of a fortuneteller that their parents believed.
However, both of them had always maintained a superficially close relationship with each other in front of their parents, as their families didn’t believe that they didn’t get along, no matter how many times they saw them arguing.
So, he couldn’t use that as a reason to stop their parents.
He also knew that their parents were just too worried about them, so he could only keep delaying it since they wouldn’t listen even when he cited many reasons why they should just cancel the marriage arrangement.
Since his parents wouldn’t agree to cancel the engagement, he could only keep delaying it until they were finally reassured that he and Ren didn’t really need to get married.
He had already succeeded for a year, and nothing had happened to him, and probably nothing had happened to Ren either, as he hadn’t heard anything bad about him from his mom or from Aunt Cess.
He hadn’t experienced any of the great misfortunes that the fortuneteller foretold, but his parents were still afraid of it and worried that he would die young, so he could certainly delay it more.
After a few more years, his parents and Ren’s parents would surely realize that he and Ren didn’t need to get married at all, and that what the fortuneteller said was complete crap.
They were still young, so such a delay in their marriage wouldn’t affect them at all.
Of course, if Ren, who was older than him, wanted to marry someone else earlier, then he would have to look for a solution to dissolve their engagement and convince their parents not to proceed with the marriage.
If Ren could convince their parents, Eli would be really happy, as he wouldn’t have to waste time listening to his mother’s nagging every time she called.
Even though he didn’t get along with Ren, he could give him a very generous gift for solving his problem.
But that bastard probably couldn’t think of anything, which was why he was also just avoiding it.
Before he could start cursing Ren in his mind for doing nothing, his door was knocked on to the sound of Sean’s loud voice.
“Eli! Why aren’t you out yet? We’re going to be late! I don’t want to give a bad impression to the school that we are assigned to!”
Eli quickly grabbed his bag and opened his door.
“I just ended the call with my mom and was just getting ready to head out.”
They immediately started heading down while talking to each other.
“Your mom’s calling you again? You should have gone back home during the break instead of staying in your apartment.”
“I certainly couldn’t. I didn’t want to be nagged at for the whole break, so it was better to just stay here and do a few online jobs. What about the others in the group?”
The apartment he was in was very close to their university, and most of the people renting in the building were also students from their school.
Sean and a few others took the same course as him.
As for Sean, he was also in the same major, so they immediately got closer compared to their other friends staying in the same apartment building.
As for the others he was asking about, they were the people they had to go with to the school they were assigned to.
“You haven’t read your messages yet? They’re already in front of our school; we can just pick them up. Jack and Mika also brought their cars, so we can just pick up the rest.”
“Okay,” Eli said, and then handed his car keys to Sean.
“Tsk. You don’t want to drive again?” Sean said, but still reached for the keys Eli was handing over.
“Of course I don’t. We’re already using my car, so of course I just want to sit in the passenger seat. If you don’t want to drive, then just give them to the others we pick up later.”
He was already contributing his car and the gas costs, so he certainly didn’t want to act as their driver as well, since that would just be more tiring.
There were others who would certainly be willing to drive, so he definitely wasn’t going to do it.
“Okay, I’ll drive, no need to bother the others. Fortunately, you have a 7-seater SUV. With Jack and Mika’s cars, it’s enough for all of us. If not, we’ll have to go back home, get our cars, and let others bring them here.”
Most of the students at their university were living in the dorms or in apartments near the school, so most of them didn’t bother bringing their own cars, as they could just walk or use the buses if they were a bit farther away.
Most of the people they were grouped with were also of the same type, so they hadn’t brought cars.
Unfortunately, the school they were assigned to was farther away, and public transport was inconvenient for them, especially since they had to travel back and forth from their university to their assigned school every half-day because of the other classes they still needed to attend.
