Jiang Minyu was sent straight to the hospital after being struck by an overzealous fan who chased his car.
The fan was detained on the spot after calling the police themselves but Jiang Minyu had suffered a fracture to his lower leg. A cast was put on immediately.
The doctor said it would take around ten weeks before it could be removed and even after that, the injured leg would still need time to recuperate. He wouldn’t be able to move as freely as before right away.
As a result, all of Jiang Minyu’s scheduled work for the next three months was completely canceled.
Something this unlucky would sour the mood of even the most mild tempered person, let alone someone with a fiery disposition like Jiang Minyu.
When it first happened, he flew into a rage. After being transferred to the ward, he continued to explode with anger.
The manager stood to the side with a lowered head and a forced smile, carrying the crushing pressure of investors, advertisers, variety shows and film projects on his shoulders, not daring to utter a single harsh word.
Back when this manager was in charge of the entire boy group Jiang Minyu belonged to, he had already found Jiang Minyu difficult to control because of his impulsive temper. On top of that, Jiang Minyu’s outstanding looks had led the manager to push him into various dinner engagements. After Jiang Minyu was acknowledged and taken back by the Li family, he was deliberately kept behind, becoming the easiest outlet whenever there was anger to vent.
Just as Jiang Minyu was in the middle of venting his frustration, Li Yang pushed the door open and walked in.
With just a glance from the man, the manager hurried out without a word, not even sparing a look at Jiang Minyu’s expression. Jiang Minyu let out a cold laugh, lifted his gaze toward Li Yang and said, “What are you here for?”
Li Yang looked back at him. “You were in a car accident.”
Jiang Minyu sneered. “As if you really care.”
Li Yang replied evenly, “We are father and son.”
Two statements. Two pieces of utter nonsense.
A fire burned in Jiang Minyu’s chest, flaring up the moment he saw Li Yang. “Is our father–son relationship really that good, that my getting into an accident warrants you coming to see me in person?”
Li Yang didn’t respond. Instead, he called the doctor waiting outside and spoke with him for a few moments.
Afterward, he turned back to Jiang Minyu. “This ward isn’t private enough. You’ll be transferred to a VVIP room shortly. News of the accident is already online. During your recovery period, you don’t need to worry about losing resources. Public opinion is being managed and there will always be better opportunities.”
“Stay here and recover properly. In a few days, you’ll be discharged and return home. There will be top tier caregivers and nutritionists assigned to you. Rest. I’m leaving now. I’ll come see you again on the day you’re discharged.”
The man stood tall by the bedside, looking down from above, like a mountain.
And to Jiang Minyu, he truly was a mountain, one that provided a place to shelter yet whose face could never be clearly seen no matter how near or far.
Jiang Minyu felt suffocated. He watched Li Yang walk to the door. Just as he reached it, Li Yang suddenly turned back.
“There’s something I need to tell you,” Li Yang said. “I’m seeing someone. He’s pregnant with my child. I’ll be making this public soon. In a few months, you’ll have a younger brother or sister.”
Jiang Minyu froze.
A rush of emotions flashed across his face, shock, bitterness, pain.
In the end, he raised sharp barbs and calmly, mockingly attached them to his words. “Didn’t you just message me earlier to lecture me? Aren’t you the same? Everyone says you’re clean and self disciplined, so how does someone who’s supposedly so clean end up getting a lover pregnant, one you’ve been hiding who knows where?”
Li Yang corrected him. “He’s not a lover.”
“Then why haven’t you gotten married?”
“We will. Once the child is safely born, we’ll hold the baby’s one month celebration and the wedding together, three days in total.”
Jiang Minyu went silent. After a moment, he asked softly, “President Li… do you still remember what my mother looked like?”
Li Yang asked in return, “Ever since the day you were brought back into the family, it’s been as if you’ve been waiting for me to break down in tears and repent to you. Would that make you feel better? But I can’t do that.”
Jiang Minyu smiled. “No wonder my mom always said you were cold hearted.”
In Li Yang’s memory, his breakup with Jiang Minyu’s mother, Madam Jiang, had been peaceful, without any real conflict. He didn’t refute it. After thinking for a moment, he said, “Lingyu, you resent me but in your own eyes, what kind of person do you think you are? The things you did to Ran Fan, do you think that wasn’t cold hearted as well?”
The room fell into a sudden, deathly silence.
Li Yang turned and left. After taking a few steps, he saw Ran Fan waiting outside the ward.
He naturally wrapped an arm around Ran Fan’s waist and said, “It’s nothing serious. The injury’s on his lower leg. With some time to recover, he’ll be fine.”
Ran Fan replied, “The nurses outside already told me.”
Li Yang asked, “Do you want to see him?”
Ran Fan shook his head. “No.”
“Really not?”
Li Yang spoke slowly, lowering his gaze as he quietly looked at his much younger lover, the former lover of his own son.
Ran Fan also lowered his eyes. After a moment, he shook his head again and looked up at Li Yang. “Let’s go home.”
The two of them walked side by side, hands clasped. Along the way, people glanced at them from time to time but they walked their own path, indifferent to the stares of the outside world.
The night wind had turned cold.
The scorching summer had quietly passed and autumn had already arrived.
Suddenly, Li Yang spoke. “It’s already been three months.”
Ran Fan paused, glanced at Li Yang’s profile, then turned his head away.
In Li Yang’s peripheral vision, he vaguely caught sight of the skin on Ran Fan’s neck tightening, proof of his nervous discomfort.
Li Yang quickly understood why. Long ago, during a casual conversation, a doctor had once mentioned that the first three months of pregnancy were not suitable for intimacy.
For the sake of monitoring Ran Fan’s condition at night, the two of them had already moved into the same room but all contact between them stopped at contact, nothing more.
Li Yang explained, “I’m not implying anything.”
Ran Fan grew even stiffer. Excessive awareness often made embarrassment and shame deepen instead of easing.
Li Yang watched as Ran Fan’s ears visibly flushed red. He laughed, softly at first, then the sound gradually lengthened.
“Fanfan,” he called. “If I really were implying something… what should we do?”
Ran Fan answered, his voice as faint as a mosquito’s buzz. “There are risks.”
“I know,” Li Yang said. “I won’t trouble you. I just need you to help me a little, would that be all right?”
At that, Ran Fan turned his head slightly. His face was flushed red yet his gaze met Li Yang’s directly. His voice was gentle as he spoke, “…All right. I’ll do it seriously.”
