You Miao wandered aimlessly along the street for a long time. It wasn’t until the rain began to fall that he finally ducked beneath a storefront awning to take shelter.
Sweat and rainwater mingled together, along with the lingering floral scent that man had left on him. The resulting smell clinging to his body could hardly be described as pleasant.
On top of that, he was wearing a shirt cut low enough to expose a large expanse of his chest. The passersby who had also stopped to avoid the rain couldn’t help letting their gazes linger on him for an extra second or two.
You Miao gripped his collar tightly, trying to cover the exposed skin. He tugged awkwardly at the hem of his shirt as well, attempting to pull it down a little. Standing alone in the corner, he thought about waiting until the rain eased before going to buy a new set of clothes to change into.
He pulled out his phone, intending to check the time, only to realize that the already low battery had completely drained. The device wouldn’t power on at all.
After fiddling with it for a while, he let out a soft sigh and slipped it back into his pocket. Lifting his head to look at the sky, he saw that the rain was coming down even harder.
It was the height of summer. When a sudden downpour arrived, the temperature dropped noticeably. Coupled with the wind, You Miao began to feel faintly chilled.
He wrapped his arms around himself. One by one, the other people sheltering from the rain were picked up by family or friends. Soon, he was the only one left. The sky darkened gradually and he stood there, staring at the empty street being washed clean by the heavy rain.
A slow, inexpressible sense of despair crept up from the bottom of his heart, along with a deep longing for his parents. He had no idea how he had ended up here, nor whether there was any possibility of returning.
His last memory was of eating and chatting happily with a few of his senior and junior martial brothers. They had been in high spirits and had a little alcohol. When he opened his eyes again, he was in this unfamiliar place, having become someone named Zhou You.
And he still had to face being… with a man.
At the thought, his chest tightened painfully. A wave of cold revulsion swept over his entire body, making him feel even colder. At the same time, nausea churned within him. Both psychologically and physically, he felt profoundly uncomfortable.
You Miao frowned deeply, praying that the rain would stop soon. He needed to buy a clean set of clothes as quickly as possible and change out of what he was wearing. He also had to buy a new pair of shoes. The pointed leather shoes left behind by the original owner were extremely uncomfortable.
If he could find a place to take a shower, that would be even better. He didn’t know where the original owner’s home was, who lived there or what kind of people they were and there was that Fang Xinyu.
They had agreed to meet after nine o’clock at a bar called “Jiudianban.” He had no idea where that bar was, whether it was far away, what kind of person Fang Xinyu was or whether he would be easy to get along with.
Staring at the falling rain, You Miao’s mind drifted through these trivial concerns. Then he thought about underwear, he needed to buy a new pair of that too. The moment the thought surfaced, the calm expression he had just regained faltered and his brows knit together again.
The sudden rainstorm lasted for more than half an hour. Finally, just as the sky grew completely dark, it stopped.
The previously deserted street gradually filled with people once more. Voices rose, car engines hummed and the crackling sizzle of charcoal fires came from the roadside barbecue stalls. The sounds of tables and stools being set up echoed through the air. Other snack vendors also began opening for business.
Although You Miao was quite hungry at that moment, his eyes scanned the night market for clothing stalls instead.
After passing through the snack street, he finally found, on an adjacent road, several vendors selling clothes and shoes.
For a fleeting moment, the familiar sight of such a night market made him feel as though he had never transmigrated at all but when he sat down at a shoe stall to try on a pair and caught sight of his reflection in the mirror, the illusion shattered.
Staring at the unfamiliar face in the mirror, he froze slightly, his emotions tangled and indescribably complex.
“Handsome guy, how is it? Does it fit?”
The shoe vendor’s voice pulled him back to reality. You Miao steadied himself. “It fits. Could you make it a bit cheaper, boss?”
“Cheaper than thirty? How can I go any lower?” The vendor, who looked to be around forty, frowned at him. “If I sold these in a shop, they’d be at least over a hundred. I’ve just set up my stall and you’re my first customer. For an opening sale, I’ve already given you a very low price. It costs me forty just to stock them.”
You Miao wasn’t skilled at bargaining. His phone was dead and he only had seventy yuan in his pocket. He took off the shoes and glanced at the others on display. “Then how much is the cheapest pair you have?”
The vendor couldn’t help but laugh. “You young people think even thirty is expensive?” Despite his words, he still picked up another pair for You Miao. “This is the cheapest. Discounted. Twenty but there’s only one size left.” He glanced at the sole and smiled. “Well, what a coincidence. Size forty two.”
At that moment, You Miao felt as though he had finally encountered a small stroke of luck. He took the shoes and tried them on. They fit perfectly and he couldn’t help smiling faintly. “I’ll take this pair. Thank you.”
He pulled out the seventy yuan from his pocket, a fifty and a twenty and handed the twenty to the vendor.
The vendor gave him an extra look, his gaze inevitably drawn to the marks visible on You Miao’s chest. A look of surprise flickered across his face.
Noticing the direction of his eyes, You Miao quickly pulled his shirt tighter, his expression slightly embarrassed. He picked up the shoes and was about to leave.
“Hey, handsome! The clothing stall over here is mine too. Want to buy a T-shirt?” the vendor called out. “Three for a hundred. Great quality. In a store they’d sell for a hundred each. I get them straight from the factory but the quality’s the same.” He turned and shouted, “Wife! Pick out two T-shirts for this handsome guy!”
“Coming!” A fair, plump woman with a smiling face stepped out from behind the racks.
“No need for two. One is enough,” You Miao hurriedly said.
The female vendor smiled gently. “Then have a look yourself, handsome. If you want to try them on, there’s a fitting area behind there.”
You Miao glanced at it. It was just a makeshift space with a piece of cloth hung up as a curtain.
There was no need to try on a T-shirt. His eyes drifted to another rack of pants. “How much are the pants?” he asked, then added, “Boss lady, if I buy a whole outfit, could you make it cheaper?”
“Sure. Take a look. See if there’s anything you like.”
The selection was simple. In the end, You Miao chose a white T-shirt and a pair of gray casual pants but when he heard that the total came to one hundred yuan, he decisively put them back down.
The boss lady laughed in exasperation. “No, handsome. The T-shirts are a hundred for three. I’m giving you one for thirty. The pants are eighty, I’m giving them to you for seventy. That’s one hundred total. Is that expensive?”
You Miao felt awkward and told the truth. “I don’t have that much money.”
The boss lady saw his handsome face flush red. He didn’t look like he was lying. “How much do you have, then?”
“Fifty.”
“…”
“I also need to buy a pair of underwear,” You Miao added softly, noticing that the stall also sold underwear and socks.
“…”
After saying that, he felt rather embarrassed but it was genuinely what he needed. If possible, he truly hoped to use the seventy yuan he had to buy a full set of clothes, from shoes to underwear.
It might be unrealistic but he remembered going to rural markets with his mother in the past. T shirts there cost ten yuan, pants twenty each, underwear five, shoes twenty, seventy yuan was more than enough for a complete outfit.
There should be similar prices here, shouldn’t there?
The city lights and the night market vendors looked no different from the world he had once known.
A faint look of wistful loss crossed You Miao’s face.
Forget it. I’ll check a few more stalls, he thought. He handed the clothes back to the boss lady, picked up the shoes he had bought and turned to leave.
“Hey, handsome, don’t go.” The boss lady looked both exasperated and helpless but also reluctant to lose the sale. “Let me ask my husband. Wait here.” She went over to the shoe stall and the couple conferred quietly.
Perhaps business was slow after the heavy rain or perhaps they genuinely wanted to make their first sale of the evening. Before long, the vendor walked over.
“Handsome, how about this? My wife and I really want to make our first sale. She said you also want to buy underwear. So here’s the deal.” He picked up a pair of black shorts from the rack. “Shorts, a T-shirt and a pair of underwear. Fifty yuan. What do you think?” Then he quickly grabbed a pair of underwear from the rack as well. “Pure cotton. I usually sell these for ten. Honestly, if you weren’t my first customer, I wouldn’t go this low. I’m just doing it to open the day.”
Although You Miao would have preferred to buy a pair of long pants, he was starting to feel a little cold, the reality of having only fifty yuan left meant he had no room to be picky.
He handed the fifty to the vendor. The man broke into a smile. “I’ll pack them up for you.”
“No need,” You Miao replied. “I’d like to change into them now. Thank you.”
The man laughed good naturedly. “The fitting area’s here.” He enthusiastically lifted the hanging cloth. “Just go in and change. There’s a wall behind it. Even changing your underwear is fine.”
You Miao thought to himself that the underwear really ought to be washed before wearing it but he politely said thank you and stepped behind the curtain.
The wall was damp from the rain and the ground beneath his feet was wet as well. There wasn’t even a stool in the makeshift changing area, so he could only stand while changing.
Having grown up in the countryside, You Miao wasn’t particularly fussy about such conditions, so he didn’t mind much. The vendor, however, was genuinely warm hearted. Just as You Miao took off his shirt and was about to remove his pants, the curtain was suddenly lifted again and a stool was pushed in, startling him.
A single lightbulb hung overhead, suspended from a wooden stick, illuminating the cramped space clearly.
The vendor looked embarrassed and apologized repeatedly before hastily retreating. Laughing awkwardly, he added, “Even though you’re an alpha and I’m a beta, we’re both men, haha. No need to be shy.”
Alpha?
Beta?
The two words caught You Miao’s attention. The hotel receptionist had also mentioned “alpha.” What exactly did it mean?
And what about beta? Like the cartoon mouse who drives a tank?
With those questions lingering in his mind, You Miao finished changing and stepped out from behind the curtain. The vendor’s eyes lit up.
“Looks good! This outfit suits you much better than what you were wearing before, handsome.”
Not particularly adept at socializing, You Miao offered a polite smile and simply said, “Thank you.”
The vendor was talkative. Seeing that You Miao had changed into the new shoes as well, he complimented him a couple more times and asked whether he liked the clothes and shoes. He told him to come again in the future and promised a discount next time.
You Miao responded courteously and asked for a bag to pack the clothes and shoes he had taken off.
The vendor’s wife handed him two bags. As she did, she seemed to notice something and studied him for a few extra seconds. When You Miao had finished packing and was about to leave, she couldn’t help speaking up.
“I say, handsome, you’re an alpha. Don’t you use scent blocking patches or wear an inhibitor bracelet when you go out? Like this, it’s dangerous for both omegas and yourself.”
Alpha again.
And now new terms had appeared: scent blocking patches, inhibitor bracelet, omega.
You Miao’s steps faltered. He was just about to ask what she meant when the rain suddenly began pouring down again.
The vendor and his wife hurriedly began gathering their things in a panic. With no time to ask questions, You Miao stepped forward to help.
The rain had come swiftly.
All three of them were drenched in moments, like soaked chickens. Fortunately, they managed to rescue most of the clothes and shoes in time; only a small portion had gotten wet.
The vendor’s wife began complaining that her husband had been unwilling to spend money on a proper canopy and the two of them started arguing beneath the eaves.
You Miao stood awkwardly between them, trying to shrink his presence as much as possible.
He stared blankly at the now empty street blurred behind the curtain of rain. His clothes were soaked through. His stomach growled with hunger and his throat felt parched. He had been cold earlier but now a strange heat was rising within his body. He lifted a hand to touch his forehead. The couple’s argument made his head throb.
After about ten minutes, the rain lightened slightly.
By then, You Miao felt as though he were burning up. Just as he began to wonder whether he was developing a fever, several police cars suddenly appeared, the sound of tires splashing through muddy water shattering the quiet of the street.
The vehicles lined up in an orderly fashion and came to a stop. Doors opened and a group of uniformed officers stepped out.
Such an exaggerated and dramatic scene drew the attention of vendors sheltering from the rain, pedestrians and shopkeepers along both sides of the street. Heads poked out to watch.
It was undeniably a striking tableau. You Miao found himself looking over as well.
The door of the lead police car did not open immediately. Someone important seemed to be seated inside. Only when an officer walked up and held an umbrella over the door did it open and a man stepped out.
From You Miao’s angle, his face was obscured by the umbrella. All he could see was that the man was tall, with long legs and a straight, imposing posture. He wore a black uniform and a pair of black Martin boots, exuding an air of untouchable authority.
Surrounded by officers, the man began walking in You Miao’s direction.
The sound of boots stepping through muddy water seemed to land squarely on You Miao’s heart. For no discernible reason, his eyelid twitched. His gaze tightened, fixed on the approaching figure as the man walked steadily closer and finally stopped in front of him.
Beneath the black umbrella, the man’s face came into view at last. The moment You Miao met those icy eyes, he felt as though he had fallen into an abyss of frost.
Xing Hui’s lofty gaze rested on You Miao without a trace of warmth, laced with disdain. He reached out and gripped You Miao’s chin, forcing him to raise his face.
Disgusted, You Miao slapped his hand away, his expression darkening. “What are you trying to do?”
Xing Hui glanced at the hand that had been struck aside. The corner of his lips curved into a cold arc. “Overestimating yourself.” Then he ordered, “Take him away.”
Two officers stepped forward and seized You Miao. He struggled. “What exactly are you doing?”
“What am I doing?” A smile appeared on Xing Hui’s refined face. He bent slightly, leaning closer to You Miao. “Why, arresting you, an escaped rapist, of course.”
