The emergency exit slammed shut behind Team Seven as they burst into the narrow underground corridor.

Everyone was breathing heavily.

Ryan leaned against the cold concrete wall, one hand pressed firmly over the cut on his shoulder.Full novel: where our hearts began — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Blood had stained the sleeve of his dark jacket, though thankfully the wound didn’t appear deep.

Ariana immediately knelt beside him.

“Sit down.”

Ryan tried to shake his head.

“It’s only a scratch.”

“It doesn’t matter,” Ariana replied firmly.

“You still need treatment.”

Professor Hayes opened the small first-aid kit mounted on the wall.

“Ethan, hold the flashlight.”

“Noah, help me.”

Within minutes, Ryan’s wound had been cleaned and bandaged.

He flexed his shoulder carefully.

“I’ve survived worse.”

Noah raised an eyebrow.

“I have a feeling that’s not a story for today.”

Ryan gave a faint smile.

“No.”

“It isn’t.”

Once everyone had caught their breath, Professor Hayes looked at Ryan seriously.

“It’s time.”

“No more half-truths.”

“You owe us an explanation.”

Ryan nodded.

“You’re right.”

He looked at Ethan first.

“After the robotics finals two years ago, everyone believed Daniel disappeared because he couldn’t live with the failure.”

He paused.

“That wasn’t true.”

Ethan remained silent.

“He left because he uncovered something dangerous.”

Ryan reached into his backpack and carefully removed an old notebook.

Its black cover was worn, and the edges of its pages had turned yellow with age.

“I’ve carried this everywhere.”

He handed it to Ethan.

“It belonged to Daniel.”

Ethan accepted it carefully, almost afraid to touch it.

Inside were engineering sketches, handwritten notes, and ideas for improving Project Genesis.

Near the center of the notebook, a folded photograph slipped out.

Ariana picked it up.

It showed the original Robotics Club standing together after winning a regional competition.

Everyone was smiling.

Daniel stood in the middle with his arm around Ryan’s shoulder.

Professor Hayes stood behind them, looking much younger.

For a brief moment…

They looked like a family.

“What happened to all of you?” Ariana whispered.

Ryan looked down.

“We trusted the wrong people.”

They continued walking through the underground corridor until they reached an old storage room.

Ryan unlocked the rusted door with a small key.

Inside, the room had been transformed into a secret hideout.

Maps covered the walls.

Newspaper articles were pinned together with red string.

Photographs of the university, the old clock tower, and Sublevel B hung side by side.

On one table rested every chess piece Team Seven had found.

The black knight.

The white queen.

The white bishop.

Beside them stood an old laptop.

Noah’s eyes widened.

“You’ve been investigating this by yourself?”

Ryan nodded.

“For two years.”

“Why didn’t you go to the police?” Claire asked.

“I tried.”

“No one believed me.”

“And after Daniel disappeared…” This chapter was copied from g.com without permission.

“…people started watching me.”

“So I disappeared too.”

Ryan switched on the laptop.

A digital map of Northfield University appeared.

Several underground tunnels stretched beneath the campus.

“I’ve spent years mapping every hidden passage.”

He zoomed in on one particular area.

“This.”

He pointed to a room beneath the medical research center.

“Is where Project Genesis was developed.”

He clicked another location.

“And this is where the stolen research was copied.”

Ariana studied the map carefully.

“There are so many hidden rooms.”

Ryan nodded.

“The university is older than most people realize.”

“Many of these tunnels were built decades ago.”

Professor Hayes frowned.

“And someone has been using them ever since.”

Meanwhile…

Far above ground…

Dr.

Samuel Bennett stood inside his office, looking through the large window overlooking campus.

A knock came at the door.

“Come in.”

A tall woman wearing a navy suit entered.

“Sir.”

“They escaped.”

Dr.

Bennett didn’t seem surprised.

“I expected they would.”

“The students are getting closer.”

“They’ve found Ryan.”

Bennett folded his hands behind his back.

“Good.”

The woman looked confused.

“Good?”

“They’ve reached the point I wanted.”

She frowned.

“I’m not sure I understand.”

Bennett smiled faintly.

“You don’t need to.”

His answer only deepened the mystery.

Was he truly an enemy…

Or was he playing a much more complicated game?

Back in the hideout…

Ryan opened another folder.

“This is what Daniel discovered before the competition.”

Inside were copies of confidential financial records.

Research funding agreements.

Corporate contracts.

Ethan scanned the documents.

“They were trying to sell the technology.”

Ryan nodded.

“Project Genesis wasn’t just a university project.”

“It had attracted international attention.”

“Medical companies offered enormous amounts of money.”

Ariana looked shocked.

“So someone sabotaged the competition…”

“…to steal the research?”

“Exactly.”

“But the theft failed.”

Professor Hayes looked at Ryan.

“Because Daniel hid the original data.”

Ryan smiled.

“And that’s why they’re still searching.”

Claire had remained unusually quiet throughout the conversation.

Finally, she spoke.

“My father…”

“I knew your father.”

Claire’s eyes widened.

“You did?”

“He wasn’t one of them.”

“He discovered the truth too late.”

“He resigned to protect you.”

Tears filled Claire’s eyes.

“For years…”

“I thought he abandoned his career because he failed.”

Ryan shook his head.

“He sacrificed it.”

“So you could grow up safely.”

Claire lowered her head, unable to hold back her tears.

Ariana quietly walked over and hugged her.

Claire froze for a second before slowly hugging her back.

“I’m sorry,” Ariana whispered.

Claire smiled through her tears.

“Thank you.”

In that moment…

The distance between them disappeared.

They were no longer rivals.

They were friends facing the same danger.

As evening approached, Ryan handed Ethan a small metal key.

“This belonged to Daniel.”

“What does it open?”

Ryan smiled.

“I honestly don’t know.”

“He only told me one thing.”

Ryan looked directly at Ethan.

“‘Give this to my brother when he’s ready.'”

Ethan closed his fingers around the key.

For the first time in years…

He felt close to Daniel again.

Not through memories.

But through the path his brother had left behind.

Suddenly…

Noah’s laptop beeped loudly.

“I found something!”

Everyone hurried over.

He had connected to the university’s old maintenance network.

One security camera had unexpectedly come online.

The footage showed a hidden hallway beneath Sublevel B.

A heavy steel door stood at the end.

Above it were two words painted in faded black letters.

GENESIS VAULT

Ryan’s smile disappeared.

“No…”

Professor Hayes looked alarmed.

“What is it?”

Ryan stared at the screen.

“I’ve searched for that vault for two years.”

“I thought it had been destroyed.”

Ethan looked at the key in his hand.

Then at the screen.

Then back at the key.

His heartbeat quickened.

“Do you think…”

Ryan slowly nodded.

“I think your brother knew exactly where the original research is hidden.”

Silence filled the room.

If the Genesis Vault still existed…

Then so did the evidence that could expose everyone responsible for the sabotage.

Outside, thunder rolled across the evening sky.

Inside a hidden control room somewhere beneath the university, an unknown figure watched the same security footage on another monitor.

The person slowly picked up a black rook chess piece and placed it beside the others.

Only two pieces remained missing.

The endgame was approaching.

And for the first time…

Both sides knew exactly what the other was searching for.
