It was indeed an egg.
About the size of a chicken egg, weighing just under a hundred grams when held in the hand. Its shell felt harder and thicker than an ordinary eggshell and as it rested in his palm, it radiated a gentle warmth.
Lu Jiu crouched in the bathroom, holding this egg, his inner turmoil already far beyond what a simple “what the hell” could express.
“111… I’m still human, right?” he asked, sounding unusually calm.
111, however, was anything but calm. It was astonished, no, downright exhilarated.
“You’re not human! You’re a zombie now!”
“…I’m a zombie human, not some zombie bird, right?!”
“But you’re a Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex! If you think about it carefully, doesn’t it make perfect sense for a big dinosaur to lay a little dinosaur egg?!”
How does that make any sense at all?!
The corner of Lu Jiu’s eye twitched violently.
He looked at the object in disbelief from every angle. It was, without question, an egg, not some bizarre, evolved version of zombie excrement.
But how exactly had he laid,
Suddenly, he clutched his lower abdomen.
“That strange organ… don’t tell me it’s for laying eggs?!”
111 perked up immediately. “I.. I… I’ll scan you again!”
One minute later,
“Jiujiujiu! That unknown organ has expanded! It’s stretched into the exact size and shape of an egg. This egg must have been incubated inside there before!”
Case closed.
So he really had been pregnant after all. That man had indeed succeeded in one shot, it was just that fate had chosen to grant him an utterly absurd method of reproduction this time.
Lu Jiu shut his eyes tightly, wishing he could simply faint on the spot.
An egg, theoretically, was meant to be incubated.
But how to incubate it, that became a serious problem.
“How do hens usually do it?” 111 pondered. “They put the egg under their butt…? Jiujiu, why don’t you give it a try?”
“…………”
Could he pretend he didn’t hear that?
“Go on, try it, try it!”
The little system’s voice grew increasingly excited, fully entering spectator mode.
Lu Jiu took several deep breaths…
He’d rather have a swollen belly!! A pregnant zombie would only offend other people’s eyes, this situation, on the other hand, was pure suffering for himself alone!!
…With an expression of sheer agony, he carefully placed the small dinosaur egg on the floor. After adjusting the angle again and again, he cautiously lowered himself to sit on it…
Roll, roll… roll, roll.
Lu Jiu looked down.
The little dinosaur egg had rolled right out from under him.
“It can move!” Lu Jiu declared, both shocked and entirely justified. “It’s not meant to be incubated by sitting on it!”
“Whoa, you’re right,” 111 said, equally amazed.
Lu Jiu quickly grabbed the clever little egg back.
The “clever egg” lay obediently in his palm. After a moment’s thought, he brought it up and pressed it against his chest.
In the next second, something strange happened,
From the eggshell extended fine, silvery threads. They adhered to Lu Jiu’s chest, connecting the two of them. A faint light flickered along the threads and the small dinosaur egg seemed to begin drawing nutrients from his body.
So that’s how it works… this is how it’s incubated?
Lu Jiu let out a breath of relief.
“Hiss… it’s taking nutrients from you but where are your nutrients coming from?” 111 asked, puzzled. “You’re a zombie, you can’t really digest or absorb food properly. If what you take in can’t keep up with what it absorbs, will you turn into a dried up corpse?”
The corner of Lu Jiu’s mouth began twitching uncontrollably again.
“Let it absorb for a while first.”
He leaned back against the wall.
“Let’s see if it stops on its own once it’s had enough.”
On that summer night, in the deserted bathroom,
Lu Jiu quietly held his own egg against his chest and closed his eyes.
…….
Reality proved that Lu Jiu would not turn into a dried corpse.
However, the limited nutrients in a zombie’s body were not enough to properly sustain the small dinosaur egg.
At midnight, the eggshell had still been gleaming brightly.
By the next morning, it had turned slightly yellow, looking faintly withered.
The tiny silver tendrils shifted restlessly across Lu Jiu’s chest, pressing here, pressing there, then shrinking back in confusion, as if wondering: Where are the nutrients? Where have father’s nutrients gone?
Lu Jiu immediately felt a pang of tenderness.
He decided to go out and search for other sources of food.
In the shops within the ruins, there were dust covered, expired supplies. In the cracks of the roads, wild grass and flowers grew untamed and if all else failed, the area was occasionally visited by animals that had not yet turned into zombies.
He planned to try them all, one by one, to see what the little dinosaur egg needed.
At daybreak, most of the zombies retreated into the buildings on either side of the street to rest. Only a few “ever reveling” and “tireless” ones continued wandering slowly outside.
Drones from the human bases began their diligent morning surveillance.
Different models hovered through the air, some with red painted wings, others with green painted bodies.
When they encountered one another, they would even circle around each other, as if greeting: “Hey, you’re here again,” “Morning, bro.”
There was not the slightest trace of rivalry or tension between them.
Lu Jiu rummaged through a residential building and found a worn out waist pouch. He placed the small dinosaur egg inside it and tied it securely around his waist.
Sneaking through the interiors of several buildings, he leapt across gaps where he could. When he could go no further, he stepped out into the sunlight… and began pretending to be a fool.
Eyes vacant, movements sluggish.
He blended perfectly with the real zombies around him, shuffling slowly toward the central shops of the ruins.
Buzz, buzz, buzz.
A drone suddenly flew over.
It had red painted wings.
It circled around to face Lu Jiu, hovering at eye level as it stared directly at his face.
After observing him for a while, it gradually descended and stopped at his waist.
It seemed particularly interested in the extra pouch he had today.
It looked extremely curious.
A vein bulged on Lu Jiu’s forehead.
…Who the hell was this gossiping busybody?
Expressionless, he swung his hand. His bone like claw shot toward the drone at lightning speed!
Buzzbuzzbuzzbuzz!
The drone hastily retreated, narrowly avoiding the strike.
It slowly rose into the air and began drawing cheerful circles, as if calling over another base’s “bro” to come take a look at the Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex’s newest fashion accessory.
Lu Jiu’s patience snapped.
He suddenly leapt up, moving faster than the human eye could follow and slammed the insolent drone out of the sky with a single strike!
With a loud smack, it crashed to the ground, splitting into two pieces.
…Not far away, a green bodied drone immediately veered off and flew into a nearby building.
Only an idiot would provoke a Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Better run, better run.
Finally free from the drones’ surveillance, Lu Jiu snorted and resumed walking with exaggerated swagger.
Daylight slowly stretched on.
The sun slowly climbed to its highest point, then gradually began to sink.
Ten kilometers away from the ruins,
As dusk fell, several off road vehicles sped into a massive “city.”
They drove through crisscrossing streets before finally coming to a stop in front of a building at the center of the city.
A group of people stood guard at the entrance. When they saw the tall, handsome man step out of the lead vehicle, they immediately went up to greet him.
“Boss!”
A gust of wind swept through, tousling He Lin’s black hair.
He strode forward, leading the group behind him into the command building.
Among those who had come to welcome them was a man in his forties.
He followed behind He Lin and asked, “I heard you nearly ran into trouble this time?”
Glancing back at Zheng Yu, who trailed at the end of the group and was currently speaking with his subordinates, the man frowned. “Why is Old Zheng so careless? Are you alright?”
“If I weren’t, I wouldn’t be standing here right now,” He Lin replied casually with a faint smile. “How’s the base been these past few days?”
“Pretty good.” The man straightened his expression and began reporting the recent situation.
Base No. 1 had three people in charge, He Lin, Zheng Yu and this man, Xu Lin.
After finishing his brief report, Xu Lin asked about the results of their expedition.
One of He Lin’s subordinates immediately jumped in, talking animatedly.
“There’s a ton! After we left that target supermarket, Boss said we should head further north to take a look and guess what, Brother Xu? We found a whole commercial street there! There were convenience stores, clothing shops, everything! All the supplies we gathered are in the vehicles behind us, you’ll see once you take a look.”
Xu Lin’s face lit up with joy. “That’s good, that’s good.”
In the apocalypse, supplies meant everything.
Even expired food was considered precious.
The subordinate continued, “Oh right, Brother Xu, we ran into the Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex at that supermarket!”
Xu Lin looked a little surprised. “It went that far? Oh, now that you mention it, there were a few days when we didn’t see it in the ruins.”
Like other bases, they sent drones to scout the ruins every day. They were already very familiar with several of the more aggressive zombies there.
Among them, the most representative one was the Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex.
This zombie had appeared in the ruins about half a year ago. In life, it must have been quite a handsome young man, well proportioned, with a slim, sharp face. A pity he had died… In its daily life, it wore an extremely flamboyant, exaggerated outfit, making it impossible to miss wherever it went.
It had a violent temperament and terrifying combat strength.
Whether it was a drone, a bird, or even a fly, if anything flew in front of it and provoked it, it would go berserk. Once that happened, it would chase its prey for miles without stopping, refusing to give up until it had killed it.
During online meetings between the various bases, they had jokingly given it the name: Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex.
The subordinate spoke with great excitement. “Yeah but that’s not the end of it, Brother Xu, you’ll never guess what happened next. The Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex is dead!”
That subordinate, the same young man who had been knocked flying in front of Lu Jiu that day and then fled in fright, was named Zhao Lushan.
Zhao Lushan said, “And guess who killed it? A mysterious handsome guy who called himself the Frenzied Triceratops! Hahahaha! Who even comes up with a name like that on purpose…”
Xu Lin froze. “The Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex isn’t dead.”
Zhao Lushan’s laughter cut off abruptly.
“…Huh?”
Xu Lin looked at Zhao Lushan, then at He Lin, who had turned his gaze toward him, completely confused.
“The Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex returned to the ruins six days ago. We even saw it again during drone surveillance yesterday evening. It just… for some reason changed its outfit…”
Zhao Lushan opened his mouth.
Six days ago?
Wasn’t that the very day they had arrived at the target supermarket?
He Lin narrowed his eyes thoughtfully, then shifted his steps and headed toward the surveillance room.
Base No. 1 possessed the largest surveillance room among all the remaining bases.
A massive screen stood at the front, divided into countless smaller grids, each displaying real time footage from different monitored areas.
As He Lin entered, all the staff inside immediately stood up to greet him.
Turning to the base consultant who hurried over, He Lin asked, “Have drones been sent to the ruins today?”
The consultant froze for a moment before quickly replying, “Not yet!”
“Then pull up the footage of the Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex from six days ago first.”
After a series of operations, all the small grids on the screen disappeared, replaced by a single enlarged surveillance feed.
Night.
A drone flew through the dark streets of the ruins.
It drifted along and at one moment, as it shifted its angle, it captured, by the faint glow of moonlight, a zombie standing at the third floor window of a nearby building.
The image flashed by in an instant but everyone in the surveillance room saw it clearly.
In the hollow sockets of that zombie’s face, a pair of round, murky eyes rolled about, that pair of eyes was the most distinctive feature of the Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Someone had once remarked that if it were still alive, those eyes would have been very beautiful.
But unlike what they remembered, the zombie in the footage was not wearing that flamboyant, aristocratic outfit. Instead, it was dressed in an ordinary black short sleeved T shirt and a pair of jeans.
Zhao Lushan stared in shock.
“…It really is it?! B… But how is that possible! When we ran into it at the supermarket that day, it was already the afternoon, at least three o’clock, right?!”
He turned his head, seeking confirmation from He Lin.
But the man simply narrowed his eyes at the screen, saying nothing.
So Zhao Lushan turned to Zhang Mu, the gloomy subordinate standing behind He Lin.
Zhang Mu gave a faint nod.
Zhao Lushan exclaimed, “How could a zombie possibly cover five kilometers in just half a day?!”
Indeed, they had once calculated the Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex’s maximum speed, in theory, it could run three kilometers in an hour.
But maximum speed was only theoretical, an ideal condition. It required the Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex to move without stopping, without being distracted for even a single second.
That was practically impossible.
Zombies were not human; they couldn’t maintain that level of focus and self control. The slightest disturbance could distract them.
Moreover, for the Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex to return from that supermarket to the ruins in such a short time, it would have needed a clear destination and moved straight toward it but it was a zombie… Even if instinct might guide it back to a familiar area, it had no real cognition, it wouldn’t know where “home” was.
Under normal circumstances, that journey should have taken at least two or three days…
“But it did appear in the ruins that very night,” Xu Lin could only conclude.
He Lin studied the footage thoughtfully. After a moment, he said, “Pull up its surveillance footage from the following days.”
The staff immediately complied.
Morning, noon, afternoon, evening.
Again and again, they captured the Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex and again and again, the zombie appeared steadily within their surveillance footage.
There was no difference in its behavior compared to before. The only change was the clothes it wore.
However, zombies occasionally exhibited traces of human like behavior.
It seemed that remnants of instinct from their former lives lingered within their bodies. Sometimes they performed actions resembling eating; sometimes they would absentmindedly change their clothing.
So while the Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex changing outfits seemed strange, it was not entirely abnormal.
Zhang Mu, the gloomy subordinate, watched the footage in silence for a long time before speaking.
“Boss, before we left the supermarket that day, Zhao Lushan and I checked the clothing section on the first floor. We really didn’t see the Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex again but we did find the outfit it had been wearing on the ground.”
“Yeah, yeah!” Zhao Lushan immediately nodded. “At the time, we even thought that Frenzied Triceratops had some kind of weird hobby, like stripping the Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex naked before killing it…”
Everyone’s lips twitched.
So, on that day, the Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex had indeed appeared in that supermarket.
And then, somehow, almost miraculously, it had returned to the ruins by the time night fell.
He Lin folded his arms across his chest, his right index finger lightly tapping against his left arm.
His narrow eyes remained fixed, unblinking, on the figure in the footage, a figure that had once overlapped with the silhouette in his dreams, catching his attention, though only briefly.
After a moment, he spoke. “Send the drone over.”
The consultant hesitated. “Now? Alright! Actually, the R&D department just completed a new type of drone today. It’s extremely small, about the size of a mosquito and it’s nearly silent in flight. It shouldn’t attract the attention of those zombies anymore. We were planning to test it today anyway.”
The consultant gestured behind him.
Soon, someone from the R&D department hurried over, holding a controller in their hands.
“Where’s the drone?” Zhao Lushan asked.
“It’s already right in front of you,” the R&D staff member replied with a proud grin. “This drone is nearly invisible, very difficult for the human eye to detect!”
He Lin pulled out a chair and sat down.
With a gentle tone, he said, “Go ahead.”
“Got it!” The R&D personnel immediately began operating it.
On the large screen, the footage switched to the real time feed from the new drone.
It flew out of the building and headed toward the direction where dusk was settling.
In the ruins, after an entire day of trial and observation, Lu Jiu had finally figured out the situation with the small dinosaur egg.
First of all, as long as it was food, the egg could absorb nutrients from it.
It didn’t matter if the food was expired or rotten, the little tendrils would still latch onto it eagerly, absorbing with enthusiasm and the egg would immediately regain its plump, glossy appearance.
But this egg… just like a human, once it had enough, it started getting picky.
It became a picky eater.
Lu Jiu held out a shriveled red date toward it. The tendrils touched it for barely a second before retracting immediately.
“No red dates?” Lu Jiu raised an eyebrow. “They’re full of nutrients!”
The little dinosaur egg’s tendrils curled up tightly, clearly expressing its disdain.
Lu Jiu then handed over a dried up apple. The little dinosaur egg paused for a moment before choosing instead to press its tendrils against its father’s chest.
…It would rather suck on its shriveled dad than a shriveled apple.
Lu Jiu felt both speechless and amused.
Watching coldly, he grabbed a bag of chips from the shelf and held it out.
This time, the egg’s tendrils eagerly latched onto it at once, pressing and kneading against the plastic packaging with great enthusiasm.
Lu Jiu tore open the bag and the tendrils stretched to an astonishing length, reaching inside to absorb contentedly.
Lu Jiu let out a laugh of disbelief.
“You’re this young and already eating junk food?”
111, playing the role of an indulgent elder, chimed in, “Ah, if the child likes it, just let it eat!”
“If it gets fat, it’ll be too late,” Lu Jiu narrowed his eyes. “No, this is the only time, there won’t be a next time. Tomorrow, you’re eating fruits and vegetables!”
The little dinosaur egg had no ears, it couldn’t hear him.
It continued slurping up the chips happily.
Which meant the roadside weeds were even less likely to be eaten.
Alright, Lu Jiu admitted, eating weeds was a bit pathetic but at least they were fresh, with no additives!
Forget it.
Tonight or tomorrow, he would definitely hunt down an animal!
…
Night fell.
Drones came and went in the ruins, one after another.
Even now, the faint buzzing still lingered between the buildings.
Lu Jiu tucked the well fed little dinosaur egg back into his waist pouch and stepped out of the convenience store.
Ahead, a drone flew past.
He immediately switched into “idiot mode,” his eyes turning vacant.
…
When the new drone from Base No. 1 entered the ruins, the first thing it saw was a regular drone from another base flying past and, not far off, a familiar zombie staggering out of a convenience store.
“Huh?”
Zhao Lushan craned his neck forward.
“Isn’t that the Berserk Tyrannosaurus Rex? Did it… get another pouch on its waist today?”
Seated in his chair, He Lin stared intently at the screen, a flicker of interest appearing in his eyes.
On the large display, the sluggish zombie shuffled slowly along the nighttime street.
Occasionally, when bumped by another of its kind, it would turn its head sluggishly, then slowly turn back…
Buzz, buzz, buzz.
Ordinary drones from other bases flew overhead, weaving back and forth above the wandering zombies.
Back and forth.
Back and forth.
Then, in a single instant,
One zombie suddenly sprang up and slammed a drone out of the air!
Smack.
It shattered into pieces.
In the surveillance room, everyone silently mourned.
Brother, why were you showing off like that? Didn’t you know to be more cautious at night?
With the buzzing gone, the entire ruins fell into silence.
Under the cover of night, the zombies wandered slowly, their footsteps producing soft rustling sounds.
At this very moment, not a single living being knew that there was still a camera high above, quietly watching them.
…Lu Jiu let out a breath of relief and straightened up.
Finally, no more drones.
Pretending to be an idiot was exhausting.
He rolled his neck.
That suddenly fluid, natural movement was captured by the hidden camera in the night sky.
In an instant, ten kilometers away, everyone in the surveillance room froze.
