“Huh? Something’s off!”
“The one who just walked into the study room—wasn’t that Su Yanfei, the number one on HKU’s campus beauty ranking? I think I saw some guy walking in next to her.”
“Pfft, a simp, right? That’s totally normal. We’ve all been through that phase. Don’t worry, we don’t need to get involved. In a bit, Simp No. 5 will come stumbling out looking dejected.”
“Haha, yeah, that’s true!”
“…”
Outside the study room, a bunch of guys passing by had seen Jiang Jun and Su Yanfei walk in together, and they all stopped to gawk, whispering and buzzing with chatter.
Of course, Jiang Jun and the others didn’t hear any of that, because they were already inside the study room, starting their one-on-one tutoring session.
It was the weekend, so there weren’t many people in the study room. The two of them picked a corner seat by the window.
Su Yanfei sat down across from Jiang Jun, pulled a test paper out of her shoulder bag, and said coolly, “This paper is mostly basic questions. Full score is 100, passing is 60.”
“Let’s see where your foundation stands first, then we’ll target the tutoring accordingly. Let me know when you’re done. Start now.”
With that, Su Yanfei sat down in her chair, a cold, aloof expression on her face. She pulled out her phone and ignored Jiang Jun entirely.
“Oh, okay.” Jiang Jun nodded in response.
He picked up the test paper from the desk and looked at the questions on it, and his face immediately fell.
What kind of joke was this?
These “basic questions” were way too basic. Without exaggerating, anyone who played on the computer even a little could easily score a few dozen points.
Was this an insult to his intelligence?
Well, he couldn’t blame anyone but “the previous Jiang Jun” for leaving such a poor impression of his academic performance on the important people around him. Otherwise, his sister wouldn’t have arranged a tutor for him.
In Jiang Jun’s eyes, of course, he thought tutoring and doing practice problems were completely redundant.
After all, in his past life, he’d been a genius in the computer science department of a top university. During those college years, he’d supported himself entirely on scholarships.
In his spare time, he’d round up his dormmates and go build simple restaurant ordering systems for shops near campus, splitting the money four ways.
Complaints aside, he still had to do the problems.
As he worked, Jiang Jun snuck a few glances up at Su Yanfei. On her desk sat a pink bear-shaped water bottle, but the water was still a bit hot, so she’d deliberately opened the lid and set it by the window to cool.
At that moment, Su Yanfei was holding her phone, intently staring at the screen, like a celestial maiden sitting serenely in a painting.
She sat not far from the window, and a breeze from outside ruffled her hair. She raised a hand to tuck the strands back—such a subtle motion, yet it left Jiang Jun utterly mesmerized.
That same breeze stirred something in Jiang Jun’s heart.
“Where on earth did my sister find this fairy of a tutor? She’s way too beautiful!”
“Back when I was in college on Earth, the CS department was like a monastery—guys everywhere, let alone a girl this gorgeous!”
“Wait… actually, tutoring doesn’t sound so bad after all. This is an opportunity. I need to seize it tight.”
With that thought, Jiang Jun’s gaze returned to the test paper, and with a flutter of excitement, he picked up his pen and started working.
While Jiang Jun was doing the test, Su Yanfei, sitting across from him, quietly snapped a photo of him with her phone.
Then she opened a chat window labeled “Yale (Boss)” and sent the photo over.
Su Yanfei: [Image]
Su Yanfei: He’s doing the diagnostic test now. Let’s see what his foundation is like first.
Yale: Good.
Yale: Today’s tutoring fee will be paid out together with your part-time wages from the music store last month. You can settle it tomorrow. From now on, just collect the tutoring fees directly from him.
Su Yanfei: Senior, why do we need to split the payments from now on?
Yale: Because only when he’s the one paying will this guy take it seriously. And we need to charge him a hefty price.
Seeing the messages on her screen, Su Yanfei let out a wry chuckle inwardly. She’d long heard that her senior had a younger brother who’d just started his freshman year, and that he was a rather odd fellow.
Now, it seemed, there was some truth to that.
A dozen or so minutes later.
“Senior, I’m done.”
Jiang Jun set down his pen and looked up at Su Yanfei with a bright smile. The latter’s expression flickered with slight surprise.
They were all multiple-choice and true/false questions, sure, but it had only been a dozen minutes—and he’d finished dozens of questions already?
But quickly, Su Yanfei’s face returned to its cool, composed state.
Because on second thought, doing such simple basic questions—wasn’t it as easy as breathing?
“Mm.”
Su Yanfei acknowledged with a soft hum, rose from her seat, walked over to his desk, and picked up the test paper to examine it carefully.
As she reviewed the paper, Jiang Jun suddenly spoke up.
“Senior.”
Jiang Jun put on a look of difficulty, his eyes darting away from Su Yanfei as he said in a low voice, “Um… there are a few questions I’m not too sure about. I might have gotten them wrong.”
Sure enough, finishing fast didn’t mean finishing right.
Su Yanfei set the paper down expressionlessly, already calculating Jiang Jun’s score in her head.
60 points.
But as everyone knows, a top student isn’t scary—what’s truly scary is a top student who knows how to control their scores.
“Your score barely passed, which means your foundation is still a bit weak.”
Su Yanfei glanced at him and said calmly, “It’s fine if you don’t know how to solve the problems—no teacher dislikes a struggling student. They just have no patience for those who clearly don’t know but refuse to learn.”
“Understood, I’ll remember that, senior.” Jiang Jun nodded seriously.
“Let’s end today’s test here. Remember to bring your textbook to class tomorrow—I’ll let you know the exact time then.”
The first tutoring session was over.
Su Yanfei glanced at her phone, as if she had something urgent to attend to, and immediately grabbed her bag and turned to leave.
Seeing this, Jiang Jun didn’t even bother packing up his things and quickly followed her steps.
“Senior, let me walk you out.”
“Mm.”
As they reached the door of the study room, not far outside was the outdoor basketball court. The moment the two of them stepped out, the guys around immediately turned their gazes toward them.
“Hey, look over there—the lapdog is following the goddess out!”
“Tsk tsk, this guy’s got some thick skin, sticking to her for this long.”
“…”
Just then.
Su Yanfei had only taken a few steps from the study room door when she suddenly turned around to face Jiang Jun, pulling out her phone and saying, “Let’s add each other, so I can contact you about the tutoring. I’ll scan yours.”
“Oh, oh, sure.” Jiang Jun nodded in response and quickly pulled out his phone to show his QR code.
With a “beep,” Jiang Jun successfully got added as a friend by the school beauty.
“What the hell?”
“Did the school beauty Su Yanfei just scan that guy’s phone? Could she have added him as a friend?”
“Impossible, absolutely impossible. Would you rather believe she added him as a friend, or believe I’m Qin Shi Huang?!”
“What friend request nonsense? If you ask me, Senior Su must have found that guy annoying and scanned to give him some money to get rid of him!”
Gotta say, this year’s students really have quite the imagination.
After seeing Su Yanfei off, Jiang Jun returned to the study room to pack up his things.
Suddenly.
Jiang Jun noticed something cute on the table in front of him, catching his eye.
