JUNE’S POV “Are you certain about that?” Tristine asked.
Although, half awake, I heard the surprise in his voice.
“Yes, Alpha,” the Physician answered, his voice firm.
“I’m very certain about it.” “Your wife is two weeks’ pregnant!” His words hit me hard like a rock and my eyes flew open.
“What did you just say?” The words left my lips before I could stop them.
Pregnant?
My mind stirred as his words settled within me.
The night I had betrayed my father flashed before my eyes again, and my heart began to pound in my chest.
The fact that I was pregnant with my enemy’s child ignited flames in me.
Harrison’s head turned from Tristine to me, his lips slightly parted.
The thick lines creasing his forehead betrayed his confusion.
“You’re two weeks’ pregnant.
Princess,” he finally said, calmly, then turned to Tristine.
“She fainted because of the strength of the cub growing inside her,” he explained.
“It weakened her.
Since she hasn’t shifted yet, her body isn’t strong enough to withstand the cub’s power.” His confidence faltered as he spoke, it was clear he was trying to pick his words carefully.
“But there’s nothing to worry about, Alpha.
Her body will eventually grow to accommodate him,” he quickly added, his smile returning to his face.
Obviously, he was trying to lighten the atmosphere, but the smile quickly faltered when he saw the look on our faces.
The thump in my heart grew louder in my ears and as the seconds stretched on, my fists clenched at my side.
Seeing Tristine at that moment rekindled my hatred for him.
I swallowed hard, trying my best to quench the flames surging within me.
No matter how angry I was, I couldn’t let him find out he was responsible for my pregnancy.
It would ruin everything we had worked so hard for.
Tristine nodded, his gaze turning inwardly.
“That’s good,” he muttered under his breath.
His words cut through my heart.
It felt like a mockery to me, and I nibbled on my lower lip.
“Please excuse me, Alpha,” Harrison who had been standing awkwardly said in a low voice.
He had just taken a step away from us when Tristine called him back, halting him in his tracks.
He turned to Tristine.
“Yes, Alpha,” he answered with a bow.
“When can we go home?” Tristine asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
“She can go home anytime you want.
She just needs to rest,” Harrison replied.
“Her body’s in perfect health.
It’s better if she rests at home.” Tristine nodded as soon as he heard him, his gaze fixed on a particular point in space.
“Don’t let anyone know how far along the pregnancy is,” Tristine muttered.
His voice remained calm, but the threat beneath it was unmistakable.
His words slammed into me and for a moment I was stunned.
What was he trying to do?
Harrison nodded fervently.
“Understood, Alpha,” he replied, his voice firm.
“I will tell no one about it.” My brows knitted.
No matter how I thought about it, I just couldn’t understand what Tristine was trying to do.
I kept staring into his eyes, searching his face, but he didn’t look at me.
He couldn’t get himself to look at me.
The deep furrow on his forehead betrayed his emotions.
His calmness was nothing but a façade.
His eyes gave him away, and the slight downturn of his lips only confirmed what he was trying so hard to hide.
Every fibre within me longed to draw the days closer, so I could execute my plans.
I didn’t even want to think of the cub growing inside of me.
I still didn’t want to believe I was really pregnant with his child.
“Get some rest,” Tristine’s voice interrupted my chains of thought.
I turned to face him, and I finally met his gaze.
As I stared into his eyes, I realized the sadness and disappointment I had seen earlier had disappeared.
There was not even a spark of anger in them, instead.
I saw something that looked like pity in them.
My curiosity piqued.
He was too calm for someone who had just heard his wife was pregnant with someone else’s child.
“Are you not going to ask who’s responsible for my pregnancy?” I asked, searching his face.
Tristine shook his head and pulled his gaze away from me.
It settled on the empty space beside me before he spoke again.
“Nobody is responsible for the pregnancy.” His words made my brows furrow and I wondered what he meant by that.
“As far as I’m concerned, I’m responsible for the pregnancy.
The child is ours.” His voice was firm as he held my gaze.
The unwavering intensity in his eyes left no room to doubt his sincerity.
For the next few seconds, I was too stunned to think.
I wanted to ask him why he wasn’t angry with me; whether he didn’t feel betrayed, but the words refused to leave my lips.
Not that it mattered to me anyway.
Deep down, I couldn’t wait for the day September had talked about.
Tristine smiled.
The soft, breathy sound of his laughter pulled me back to the present.
“I know you’re surprised,” he said, a quiet chuckle escaping his lips.
I could tell he was trying his best to hide the pain behind that smile.
“You must be wondering why I decided to take responsibility.” His golden-rimmed eyes met mine once more, their unwavering glow refusing to waver.
“I love you, and that’s all that matters,” he said, his voice filled with sincerity.
“I’m willing to wait until you’re ready to tell me who the father is…
and what happened to you.” He walked over and sat on the couch beside the bed.
Lowering his voice, he continued, “I saw how angry you were when you heard the news.
I could feel the hatred in your heart.” He paused, his eyes never leaving mine.
“I have a feeling you went through something terrible – something you’re not ready to talk about yet.” His voice softened to almost a whisper.
“So I’ll wait…
until you’re ready to tell me everything.” My chest rose and fell rapidly as I listened to his calm voice, but somehow it strengthened my resolve.
I felt greatly repulsed, his nearness only made it worse.
As I stared into his eyes, I silently told myself.
‘You’ll eventually know who’s responsible, but that’s after I had driven a sword into your heart.’ The door suddenly swung open.
Luna Amelia walked in, with Princess Cassy trailing behind her, snapping me back to reality.
Only then did I realize my fists were clenched so tightly at my sides that my nails had dug into my palms.
