July 3, 2017.
Mo Han looked at the date on the calendar, then turned to the window. It was getting dark, and the city was slowly covered in a soft night glow.
Everything looked normal. Who would have thought that the apocalypse would begin on such an ordinary night?
Around 8 p.m., Mo Han suddenly felt very sleepy.
His heart jumped. It’s finally here.
On this night, every living thing on Earth would fall asleep until the next morning.
When people woke up, some would gain special powers. Those who didn’t wake up would turn into zombies.
Mo Han would awaken his power on this very night.
The sleepiness came like waves, stronger and stronger. In the end, he couldn’t resist and fell asleep.
The next morning, Mo Han was woken by a sharp, terrible scream.
Hearing the desperate screams and faint growls from downstairs, a deep fear rose in his heart.
The apocalypse had truly arrived.
Mo Han was not a brave person. He was actually very timid. Even though he had prepared himself mentally, his body still trembled with fear.
He didn’t know if he could survive in this cruel world.
He didn’t want to die.
That first scream seemed to wake up countless monsters and opened the beginning of the apocalypse. Soon, more and more screams filled the air.
Forcing himself to stay calm, Mo Han walked to the window and looked outside.
Through the glass, he saw chaos on the streets.
Many people who had been outside at night had already turned into zombies. Those who were still human were being attacked and eaten.
Even if he wanted to help, he couldn’t. With his newly awakened power, going outside would only mean death.
Wait—my power!
Mo Han quickly ran back into the room.
In the novel, his ability was control over the three states of water. He could control ice, liquid water, and even water vapor in the air. This made him stronger than most ability users, who could only control one form.
Mo Han focused his mind.
Soon, he created a crescent-shaped ice blade about the size of his hand.
It shot forward instantly and sank deeply into the wall.
Seeing this, Mo Han was shocked. The power was strong.
With this, he had a better chance to protect himself.
He estimated that he could only create about ten such ice blades before his energy ran out. So he couldn’t use them unless it was necessary.
According to the novel, there were several ways to grow stronger.
One way was to absorb crystal cores from zombies or mutated creatures. But only level-one or higher zombies had these cores.
Another way was to keep using abilities to train them or to meditate to recover energy.
Originally, Mo Han planned to go to the future base location before the apocalypse began.
But later, he gave up the idea.
In the early stage, nowhere was safe. Even if he reached the base, he might be forced to defend it because of his abilities.
Also, in the novel, his second ability—healing—awakened later on the way to the base with the male lead.
After thinking carefully, he decided not to go there yet.
Suddenly, his phone rang.
For now, communication still worked. But by the end of the day, all signals would fail due to unknown interference.
Mo Han looked at the caller ID.
“Zhong Tianxiang.”
He frowned slightly. It was the male lead.
After a short pause, he answered.
“Hello, Tianxiang.”
“Mo Han, where are you? Are you okay? ”Zhong Tianxiang sounded worried.
“I’m at home. I’m fine. What about you? ”
“I’m home too. I’m okay. Don’t go outside. Wait for me—I’m coming up to you.”
Zhong Tianxiang lived one floor below him.
Even though Mo Han didn’t like him much, he still felt worried.
“You shouldn’t come out. It’s too dangerous.”
“Don’t worry. I can protect myself.”
Then the call ended.
What was coming couldn’t be avoided.
Mo Han sighed and walked to the door.
To be honest, Zhong Tianxiang was a good person. At a time like this, he still cared about Mo Han. Most people would have run away alone.
So in the original story, Mo Han’s death really was his own fault.
Soon, there was a knock on the door.
“Mo Han, it’s me. Open the door!”
Mo Han quickly opened it and let him in, then shut it tightly.
“Tianxiang, are you okay?”
“I’m fine. The hallway is still safe for now.”
Zhong Tianxiang was about the same age as Mo Han, around 24 or 25. But he looked more mature and reliable—just like a main character.
Unlike Mo Han, who looked weak and gentle.
Zhong Tianxiang fell onto the sofa and rubbed his temples.
“What is happening? I just went to sleep, and when I woke up, the whole world changed.”
Mo Han shook his head.
“Who knows.”
He wasn’t lying—he really didn’t know the true cause.
“By the way,” Zhong Tianxiang said, “did you gain any special power? ”
“I did,” Mo Han replied.
“What about you? ” he asked.
“I can control metal.”
As he spoke, he waved his hand. The metal cup on the table instantly turned into a small iron ball.
Just like in the novel—his power was metal control.
Mo Han nodded.
“My ability is control over the three forms of water.”
“So… what are you planning to do? ”Zhong Tianxiang asked.
Mo Han hesitated and shook his head.
He didn’t really have a plan yet.
For now, he would just follow Zhong Tianxiang. According to the story, he wouldn’t be in danger until they met the female lead.
“What about you? ”
Zhong Tianxiang sighed, worry filling his face.
“My parents are in City C. I talked to them earlier—they’re safe at home. I’m going there to find them.”
In the novel, this was exactly when they would meet the female lead, who was also going to City C to find her parents.
Mo Han had no family left, no one to worry about.
So he had already decided—no matter what, he would follow the main character.
“I’ll go with you to find your parents.”
“Really? ” Zhong Tianxiang looked happy, but then his expression turned serious.
“The journey will be dangerous. I don’t know if we can make it there alive.”
Mo Han gave a bitter smile.
“Is there any safe place now? Staying home is only temporary. I can’t stay here forever.”
Zhong Tianxiang nodded.
“Alright. Then we’ll go to City C together. After we get there, we’ll decide what to do next.”
