Chapter 468: A Letter from the Kingdom of Raven

Before winter fully set in, Brother Alex and Sister-in-law Daniela returned to the Heine Margraviate. For some reason, another royal magic pharmacist accompanied them. Why…?Full novel: Frontier magic pharmacist — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“This is your way of thanking us for teaching you how to make the full recovery potion? There was no need to go so far.”

Apparently, the pharmacist had been assigned to House Heine’s service without charge. I gave a wry laugh when I heard the official explanation, but I knew the real reason. That was merely a pretext; in truth, they wanted the Heine Margraviate to train royal magic pharmacists.

Arisa must have demonstrated the results of her training. Once they saw how dramatically her skills had improved, they decided to send another royal magic pharmacist. From our perspective, another pair of hands for potion production was welcome, so I had no objections.

The days that followed were spent preparing for winter, making potions, magic tools and daily necessities for the Heine Trading Company, and experimenting with new materials in the greenhouse. Before we knew it, the year had ended and the thaw had begun.

“Lady Daniela, a letter has arrived for you.”

“Thank you. I wonder who it’s from?”

A servant brought the letter while we relaxed in a sunlit salon with Mira curled against us. Sister-in-law Daniela often exchanged letters with her family in the capital, so I initially assumed it was one of those. Apparently, it was not.

Sister-in-law Daniela took the letter opener and carefully broke the seal. Her expression stiffened. Brother Alex, who had been drinking tea beside her, immediately noticed. As she read, the colour drained from her face and her hands began to tremble.

“Daniela, what does it say?”

Brother Alex moved at once to support her and was already holding her hand. He was quick, as always. Lady Fabienne, seated beside me, stiffened and clung to my arm. Her figure seemed to have developed even further lately… No, this was hardly the time for such improper thoughts.

Sister-in-law Daniela was too shaken to speak and could only hand the letter to Brother Alex. He read it quickly, then looked straight at me.

“Julius, I would like to use the full recovery potion you gave me earlier. Would that be all right?”

“Of course. Don’t hesitate to use it.”

I did not yet know what had happened, but someone had clearly been gravely injured—so gravely that a full recovery potion was necessary. The person must also have been deeply connected to Sister-in-law Daniela and probably lived outside our kingdom.

If the injured person belonged to our royal family, the royal magic pharmacists would use one of their own full recovery potions. If that was impossible, the person was probably abroad. The fact that the letter had been sent directly to Sister-in-law Daniela also suggested that the matter was confidential.

Brother Alex said nothing further. Supporting Sister-in-law Daniela, he left the salon, probably to consult Father. Those of us left behind spent the remainder of the day in uneasy silence.

That night, Father summoned me to his study. It was almost certainly about the letter. When I hurried there, I found Mother, Brother Alex and Sister-in-law Daniela with him.

There was a seat open next to Mother, so I sat there. Naturally, the attendants and servants were dismissed from the room. Immediately, Sister-in-law Daniela handed me the letter from earlier.

In summary, a knight in the western Kingdom of Raven had suffered life-threatening injuries.

I returned the letter and waited. At last, Sister-in-law Daniela spoke in a heavy voice.

“Princess Sophia of the Kingdom of Raven and I have been friends since childhood. We often visited each other’s countries. The knight mentioned in the letter is her fiancé.”

I see. That explained most of it. A full recovery potion was an extraordinarily valuable item. If the recipient were royalty, the Spencer Kingdom could provide one without difficulty, naturally in return for appropriate compensation.

A noble or knight, however, was another matter. If we distributed the potions too freely, people might begin to think they were easy to obtain, diminishing their perceived value and inviting other countries to take advantage of us.

There would have been no problem if Princess Sophia and the knight were already married. Judging from the letter, however, they were only engaged.

If he was merely a knight, we could not casually provide him with a full recovery potion as an official act.

“Then you wish to give the full recovery potion as a personal get-well gift from one friend to another. In that case, no approval from the kingdom is required. I think that is a good solution. Please use it as you see fit, Sister-in-law Daniela.”

“As expected of Julius. You understood immediately, which is a great help. Father, Julius agrees. May I give one to Princess Sophia?”

Father folded his arms and seemed deep in thought. Was there a problem? Sister-in-law Daniela looked at Father with pleading eyes.

“Yes… I suppose we have little choice. However, we cannot simply send the potion to the Kingdom of Raven. If it is a personal get-well gift, would it not be better for Alex and Lady Daniela to deliver it themselves?”

Father was evidently concerned by how deeply Sister-in-law Daniela worried for Princess Sophia. He did not believe that merely sending the potion would ease her mind.

He was probably right. Her expression when she received the letter made her feelings obvious, and even now she looked unwell. Simply sending the potion would not calm her heart; the anxiety might begin affecting her daily life.
