Just another Isekai Lover~

Chapter 469: Sister-in-law Daniela’s Request

Sister-in-law Daniela was a member of the royal family who had married into House Heine. If anything happened to her, the consequences would be disastrous. No wonder Father was cautious; I completely understood his concern.Full novel: Frontier magic pharmacist — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Just as Father pressed a hand to his forehead in worry, Sister-in-law Daniela bowed so deeply that her head nearly touched the table. I was not the only one alarmed by the sight.

“Lady Daniela, please raise your head.”

“Father-in-law, I have a request. Please allow me to go to Princess Sophia’s side.”

Brother Alex, seated beside her, bowed as well. If Sister-in-law Daniela travelled to the Kingdom of Raven at her own request, the Spencer Kingdom would have little reason to object to House Heine’s involvement.

A heavy silence followed. It felt endless, though it probably lasted only a short while. Mother, her expression clouded with concern, finally spoke.

“Husband.”

“Very well. I shall permit you to go to the Kingdom of Raven. Alex, you will accompany her.”

“Understood. I will protect Lady Daniela with my life.”

Brother Alex raised his head and met Father’s gaze with unusual resolve.

What was going on? Would the journey really be so dangerous? His determination felt ominously grave. Uneasy, I looked towards Mother, and she gave me a sorrowful smile. Now I was even more curious.

“This must remain among us. The Kingdom of Raven is presently facing some trouble involving monsters.”

That explained it. The knight betrothed to Princess Sophia must have been wounded while fighting those monsters.

Perhaps he had distinguished himself in that battle while trying to prove himself worthy of formally becoming Princess Sophia’s husband.

I did not know what kind of monsters they faced, but would full recovery potions alone be enough? If the news had not yet spread beyond the kingdom, the situation was probably serious. The greater the problem, the more tightly a country would control the information.

“Father, I am worried about Brother Alex and Sister-in-law Daniela. May I accompany them? I would not be much use in battle, but I can make magic potions.”

That was my way of declaring that I would not join any fighting even if I went to the Kingdom of Raven. If I failed to say so, Mother would worry. She had even scolded me fiercely after the minor skirmish in the Mulan Marquisate.

“Julius…”

“It will be all right, Mother. If monsters are involved, the more recovery potions we have, the better. This may even be an opportunity to demonstrate the quality of the Heine Trading Company’s potions.”

Mother’s eyes filled with even more concern. Father closed his eyes in thought. Sister-in-law Daniela remained bowed while Brother Alex tried to persuade her to raise her head.

“Julius, accompany Alex and Lady Daniela to the Kingdom of Raven. Lady Daniela, please raise your head. Julius will be travelling with you. Everything will be all right.”

Only then did Sister-in-law Daniela finally raise her head. Frankly, Father’s faith in me was startling. Was it the trust one placed in a dependable person, or the trust one placed in someone certain to cause chaos but somehow resolve it? I was tempted to ask.

Mother looked down in silence. She must have opposed the decision but was holding back her words. I gently stroked her hand, and she immediately squeezed mine.

“I’m truly sorry for causing so much trouble.”

As Sister-in-law Daniela tried to bow again, Father stopped her with one hand.

“There is no need to apologise. I do not consider this troublesome at all. A father naturally does everything he can for his beloved daughter. Would you not agree?”

“…Yes, that’s true.”

Mother raised her head and offered a faint smile. She understood that this was the right decision; she was simply overflowing with love for her children.

Our course was decided. We would soon depart for the Kingdom of Raven, taking some of the mid-grade recovery potions stored by House Heine’s territorial knights with us.

Spring was the season for gathering River Moose antlers along the Toradel River. Lady Fabienne and the royal magic pharmacists could handle potion production while I was away, so the Heine Trading Company should have no supply problems. Wait… did that mean they no longer needed me?

The next day, while we hurried through our preparations, Rosalia finally realised that something was happening. She and Mira cornered me for an explanation.

“Brother Julius, did something happen?”

“Kyuu?”

“Oh, I am only going to the neighbouring Kingdom of Raven for a little while.”

“You’re going on a trip? Yay!”

“Kyu!”

“Rosalia and Mira, however, must stay here. Be good and wait for me, all right?”

Rosalia and Mira froze. Sister-in-law Meeka, who had been secretly listening from a short distance away, froze as well. The instant I thought, ‘Oh no,’ she crossed the space between us.

“Julius, what exactly is going on? Would you kindly explain everything to your big sister?”

Her smile did not reach her eyes as she approached. Once Rosalia and Mira realised they were being left behind, they began protesting noisily.

Brother Cain joined us after hearing the commotion, followed shortly by Brother Alex and Sister-in-law Daniela, who hurried over in alarm. Naturally, our parents came as well.

The uproar grew so great that Father gathered everyone in the salon. Apparently, he meant to explain everything now. He had probably intended to discuss it over lunch, and he looked faintly troubled.

He had evidently anticipated the commotion and therefore said nothing at breakfast. Unaware of his intentions, I had gone and revealed the matter myself.

I still had much to learn. I needed to become better at judging what information to share and what to keep to myself.
