Chapter 470: Off to the Kingdom of Raven

Father, Brother Alex and Sister-in-law Daniela carefully explained what had happened in the Kingdom of Raven, choosing every word with care. Naturally, they began by warning everyone not to repeat the story.Full novel: Frontier magic pharmacist — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

I would have to tell Lady Fabienne as well. Perhaps Father intended to explain it to her once she arrived.

I should have gone to the Ambert residence to collect her earlier, but I had hesitated, thinking that arriving so early in the morning might be inconvenient. Had I known this would happen, I would not have worried about it.

“So Julius will be going too. That sounds difficult—for him as well.”

“We do not intend to stay long, so it should not be a serious problem. Whether we will return before Brother Cain and Sister-in-law Meeka leave for the Royal Academy, however, is uncertain.”

“Julius-chan…”

Sister-in-law Meeka’s voice sounded directly beside my ear because I was currently sitting on her lap. How had that happened? Two soft, slime-like cushions pressed against my back. Brother Cain’s eyes had not been smiling for some time, which was rather terrifying.

“As matters stand, we do not know exactly when we will return. We will come home as soon as our business is finished.”

Sister-in-law Daniela nodded at Brother Alex’s words. If we remained in the Kingdom of Raven too long, strange rumours might spread. That was evidently her concern. We needed to make it clear that we were visiting only to see Princess Sophia.

Even Rosalia fell silent when she heard that monsters might be involved. She had once been attacked by a wyvern, and the fear must still linger. I felt sorry for her, but part of me was grateful for that experience. It meant she would not recklessly involve herself in danger.

“Kyuu…”

“I wish we could take Mira, but we cannot carry an important holy dragon out of the country. Besides, Rosalia and Lady Fabienne would be lonely without Mira.”

“I would be lonely without Mira too.”

“Kyuu!”

Mira squeezed between Sister-in-law Meeka and me. Pushed aside, I was finally released from her lap and returned to my own seat. The movement made Sister-in-law Meeka’s ample chest bounce beside me. That was dangerous for the eyes, and Brother Cain’s gaze had sharpened like a hawk’s, so I wisely looked elsewhere.

“Father, I would like to tell Lady Fabienne about this as well. May I?”

“Of course. But Julius, you must not take Lady Fabienne with you. Do you understand?”

“I know. I was hoping to ask Lady Fabienne to look after Mira as well.”

As soon as the discussion ended, I went to collect Lady Fabienne. It was later than usual, and she was probably growing restless at the Ambert residence. I picked up Mira and hurried there.

“So that’s what happened. Of course, I won’t tell anyone about it.”

While flying from the Ambert residence to the House Heine estate, I explained the situation to Lady Fabienne. She agreed immediately, though worry was written plainly across her face.

I understood how Lady Fabienne felt. Had our positions been reversed, I would certainly have tried to stop her. That was why I chose not to say anything more. Once I returned from the Kingdom of Raven, I would have to turn the whole affair into an amusing story for her. I had to do my best.

While I was away, House Heine’s territorial knights would escort Lady Fabienne between the Ambert residence and the estate. I had told her that she could make potions at home and have them delivered, but the royal magic pharmacists had specifically requested that ‘Lady Fabienne stay with us.’

They had recognised Lady Fabienne’s skill as a magic pharmacist and now looked up to her as a senior colleague and mentor. That was gratifying in itself, yet I had strangely mixed feelings. Why was that?

Preparations advanced quickly. Two days after the letter arrived, we were ready to leave. Our family, House Heine’s territorial knights and the royal magic pharmacists gathered before the estate gates. Naturally, Lady Fabienne was there as well.

“Travel safely. Alex, Lionel—I am counting on you to protect Lady Daniela and Julius.”

“Of course.”

“Leave it to us.”

Father evidently believed that Brother Alex alone could not keep me under control, so, as usual, he assigned Lionel as my personal escort. Was that truly acceptable? Lionel was the commander of House Heine’s territorial knights. Perhaps it simply proved how much of a troublemaker I was. The painful part was that I could not deny it.

“I am off, Lady Fabienne.”

“Please take care of yourself.”

As we hugged goodbye, I spoke softly by her ear.

“I will report to you through the communication ring every day whenever possible.”

“Yes. Please do not push yourself too hard.”

“I understand. I won’t.”

I made Lady Fabienne a firm promise. Building mutual trust was important.

Afterwards, I said goodbye to Mother, Rosalia, Mira, Brother Cain and Sister-in-law Meeka before boarding the carriage.

To avoid attracting attention, we kept the escort as small as possible: two carriages and six mounted guards. The journey would be somewhat inconvenient, but Sister-in-law Daniela had already agreed. She looked apologetic, so Brother Alex and I smiled reassuringly at her. Then the carriage set off for the Kingdom of Raven.
