Chapter 471: The Border Town of the Kingdom of Raven

We were riding in a special carriage designed for long-distance travel.Full novel: Frontier magic pharmacist — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

In recent years, horse racing had dramatically improved the quality of horses, and the number of strong animals suited to long journeys was steadily increasing. Naturally, our carriage was drawn by such robust horses, and the vehicle itself had been built to be sturdy and minimise shaking. Even so, the constant vibration was hard to endure.

“Julius-chan, is your bottom all right?”

“I’m fine. No problem.”

A little while earlier, Sister-in-law Daniela had tried to put me on her lap, but I had refused. I had grown bigger, and I was no longer at an age when sitting on someone’s lap was appropriate. To be honest, I had turned her down with a heavy heart. Maybe I had wasted a valuable opportunity after all.

“It would be nice if we had a carriage that shook less.”

“Do you have something in mind?”

“Well, I’ve been thinking about something like this.”

With that, I described a structure that used metal leaf springs. I also mentioned coil springs. Until now, the usual approach had been to use soft cushions stuffed with wool or cotton. If my idea worked, it could provide another option.

“That sounds interesting. Once we return to the Heine Margraviate, let’s try it at once.”

“It’s only an idea for now, so I don’t know how practical it will be.”

“If it’s your idea, Julius-chan, I’m sure it will work. Oh, perhaps I shouldn’t call you ‘-chan’ any longer.”

“Yes. Being called that in the Kingdom of Raven would be a little embarrassing.”

When I lowered my gaze, laughter rose around me. Brother Alex and I were doing our best to keep Sister-in-law Daniela from sinking into gloom. Over the past two days, she had gradually begun to return to normal, but every so often her expression still clouded over like a stormy sky.

The carriage journey proceeded smoothly, without any attacks by bandits or monsters. That was only natural. At every town where we stopped, we joined merchants who were also travelling towards the Kingdom of Raven.

Travelling with merchants did carry some risk of attracting bandits, but greater numbers also made it easier to respond to danger—or to flee if necessary.

Thanks to that, the journey was uneventful, although it took a fair amount of time. I was sure Sister-in-law Daniela’s anxiety was steadily growing. Even so, safety came first.

A few days later, the Kingdom of Raven finally came into view.

“We can see the border of the Kingdom of Raven now.”

“Is that it? I’m rather excited to see what kind of country it is.”

“That’s right—this is your first time leaving the Spencer Kingdom, isn’t it? I’ve been here several times, but it isn’t very different from Spencer. The Kingdom of Raven does have a coastline and a large port, though.”

“The sea, huh? I imagine it stretches on forever.”

Of course, I knew what the sea was, so I played along with Brother Alex’s comment. The Spencer Kingdom was landlocked, so it had no connection to the sea or any major ports. With access to the ocean, it would probably have engaged in far more active trade.

When Brother Alex showed something to the border guards, their attitude visibly changed. They apparently knew who we were. I remained inside the carriage and could not hear the conversation, but Brother Alex, Sister-in-law Daniela and Lionel spoke outside for quite some time.

“Did something happen?”

I asked Sister-in-law Daniela as she hurried back into the carriage. Brother Alex and Lionel followed close behind her. The moment all three were inside, the door was shut. Their expressions were tense. Had we failed to arrive in time?

“It seems Princess Sophia is already nearby. She has brought the wounded soldiers with her, of course.”

“That’s reckless! What does she intend to do if something happens?”

“Please don’t blame Princess Sophia. After reading the letter I sent, she apparently couldn’t remain still. This is partly my fault as well.”

“Daniela…”

Brother Alex placed a hand on Sister-in-law Daniela’s shoulder. Unsure where to look, I turned towards Lionel. He also looked troubled, but he quickly gave the order to move the carriage. We were probably heading towards Princess Sophia.

We arrived at a large mansion in the border town. Anyone who knew what to look for would immediately have realised that it was under tight security.

Even so, the gatekeeper led our carriage into the garden. Several people in luxurious clothing were already waiting in the courtyard.

“Princess Daniela!”

“Princess Sophia, I’m sorry to have kept you waiting.”

“Not at all.”

They truly must have been close. The two embraced on the spot. A hug between two beautiful young women made for a picturesque scene. While entertaining that mildly inappropriate thought, I quickly considered what I needed to do.

“Sister-in-law Daniela, may I go on ahead?”

“That’s right. We have something important to do, don’t we?”

Sister-in-law Daniela turned to Princess Sophia. Her pale face now held a bright, hopeful expression.

“This is my fiancé, Alex Heine, and beside him is his youngest brother, Julius. Princess Sophia, Julius has brought a full recovery potion. May we see the knight in your care?”

“Of course.”

Princess Sophia nodded firmly in response to Sister-in-law Daniela’s request.
