Chapter 472: The Wounded Soldier
We were taken to the innermost room of the mansion, where very little sunlight reached.
There, almost as though he had been hidden away, lay the wounded soldier.
“Erwin Bergmann. I’m a knight.”
“Sorry to meet you in this state.”
Sir Erwin raised his left hand in a friendly greeting. Looking more closely, I saw that he had lost his dominant right hand and both legs. Sister-in-law Daniela gasped and clung to Brother Alex. Perhaps trying to shield her from the sight, Brother Alex drew her head against his chest.
“Er! I told you who these people were, didn’t I?”
“Oh, right. Of course.”
Sir Erwin laughed cheerfully. He was undoubtedly trying to lighten the mood for our sake. I, meanwhile, stared at him while using Appraisal to determine his exact condition. The word ‘Poisoned’ appeared before my eyes. I was glad I had brought an antidote just in case.
“I’m Alex Heine. This is my fiancée, Princess Daniela Crystal Spencer, and the silent boy staring at you is my youngest brother, Julius. Julius, do you have anything to say?”
“The bandages will obstruct the treatment. May I remove them?”
“Hm? Ah, of course. The wounds haven’t completely closed, though. They may be a little too much for the ladies to see.”
As we spoke, Princess Sophia gripped my shoulder with surprising strength. It hurt a little. Her eyes were wide with determination, and her finely shaped brows were drawn tightly together.
“Can Er’s wounds be healed?”
“Of course. As long as he is alive, I can heal any wound. However…”
“However?”
“The potion tastes like a refreshing forest.”
Silence fell over the room. World Tree materials were rare. The materials delivered to the royal castle had all been used by the trainees in their attempts to make full recovery potions, so I had not yet been able to compound another batch myself. I hoped to take on that challenge this year.
“A refreshing forest, is it? If it tastes better than a basic healing potion, I’ll be delighted. I’ll gladly drink it.”
“Sir Erwin, Julius’s potions are in a completely different league. Just be careful not to become addicted.”
Brother Alex smiled brightly. Addicted? That was a misleading way to put it. Still, once someone had tasted my potions, they would never want to return to the original foul-tasting versions. Perhaps it really was a kind of addiction.
We asked Sister-in-law Daniela and Princess Sophia to leave the room, then removed the bandages. Parts of the wounds appeared necrotic. That must have been caused by the poison Appraisal had detected. What in the world had he fought?
“This is the full recovery potion. Please drink it all at once.”
“So this is a full recovery potion? I’ve never seen one before. Here goes.”
Sir Erwin downed the potion in one gulp. His face twisted slightly. That was to be expected from something described as tasting like a refreshing forest. I wondered what it actually tasted like.
As I considered that, his missing limbs began to regenerate, writhing as they grew back. Yes, this was definitely not something the ladies should see. Even Brother Alex was staring with his mouth slightly open.
“H-His limbs are truly growing back. Unbelievable… They’re moving! They can move!”
“That is what this potion does. Sir Erwin, please drink this next. There are still traces of poison in your body.”
“Poison? Very well—bottoms up. Sweet! What is this? Surely this isn’t an antidote?”
“It is an ordinary antidote. I made it myself, though.”
Sir Erwin must have shouted loudly enough for the ladies to hear, because they burst back into the room. The moment Princess Sophia saw him whole again, she crumpled to the floor as her legs gave way.
Sir Erwin immediately sprang from the bed and caught her.
The full recovery potion had worked perfectly. My own ability frightened me—or rather, the ability I had inherited from the game did.
Princess Sophia broke down in tears, and Sir Erwin comforted her. Feeling that we should not intrude, we allowed a servant to guide us to a guest room.
“I’m so glad his wounds healed completely. As expected of a potion Julius made.”
“I’m relieved the full recovery potion worked as intended. I was confident in its effects, but I couldn’t be certain until I saw them for myself. I’m also glad I came here in person.”
“Oh? Why is that?”
“Sir Erwin showed signs of poisoning. I gave him an antidote as well, so I believe he is safe now.”
“I see. You did well. As your brother, I’m proud of you.”
Brother Alex patted my head. I felt both pleased and embarrassed. While I was still caught between those emotions, Sister-in-law Daniela embraced me. The pressure of her chest against me was intense even through her armour, but after being hugged so many times, I had learned how to keep my airway clear.
We then ate the sweets prepared in the guest room. Apparently, they were sold only in the Kingdom of Raven. They were biscuits filled with sweet bean paste, somewhat like monaka. The nostalgic flavour was delicious.
As we ate, Princess Sophia and Sir Erwin finally entered the room, apparently having calmed down. Sir Erwin was no longer dressed as a patient; he had changed into a knight’s uniform.
I had not noticed earlier, but Sir Erwin was a large, powerfully built man. Princess Sophia looked tiny beside him. It might have been rude to think so, but they resembled Beauty and the Beast.
