Reyna hid her face in her hands as she frantically thought of what to do.
Her body shook with undisguised nervousness.
The conversation might have been stopped for the time being, but she knew that the freelancer wasn’t going to let it go.
She should have known this was going to happen the moment he started questioning her origins.
Reyna didn’t know why, but he seemed to have already suspected that she wasn’t from the Empire.
Now that he knew her son had been taken to an enemy country, he was going to pursue this topic to the end.
A warm hand rested on her shoulder, jolting her out of her spiraling thoughts.
She looked up at Jeanette, who looked surprisingly calm despite the seriousness of the situation.
“Aren’t you worried—” Her words were cut off as Jeanette tightened her grip on Reyna’s shoulder.
“I’m sure the others are doing just fine.
Don’t worry about what that man said.
It’s complete nonsense.
We’ll find Phoenix without him,” Jeanette said.
It took Rayna a moment to realize why Jeanette was acting like this.
They were in the middle of the police station.
Anything they said would be caught on camera and recorded.
She wanted to avoid leaving any incriminating evidence.
It seemed like Jeanette had some plan in mind.
Knowing that she could count on Jeanette, she chose to remain silent until the others arrived at the police station.
Some time passed and police officers occasionally checked up on them to make sure they were okay and that they weren’t messing with the equipment.
The two would wave off the officers with reassurances that they were doing okay and that they didn’t need to ask.
The officers would soon leave after, leaving them alone.
Reyna wasn’t sure why the police didn’t just kick them out of the room if they weren’t supposed to stay there unsupervised.
It seemed counterproductive, but if they weren’t going to force them out, she wasn’t going to move.
Then the man and his companions finally returned.
Reyna tensed as the man’s companion said, “Two men are in the lobby looking for you.
Are they the ones who were waiting?” “It should be my husband and son,” Jeanette said, helping Reyna to her feet and walking towards the door.
Neither of them were stopped though Reyna swore she heard the man murmur something.
What did he say?
She glanced back at the man, but he showed no emotion on his face.
As the two women walked away, she couldn’t help wondering if she had been imagining things.
After a moment’s thought, she decided to drop it for now.
She had other things to worry about and could worry about it later.
The moment Seamus and Waylon saw the two women step into the lobby, they rushed over.
Their sudden movement drew eyes, but no one stepped forward to stop them.
However, their every move was watched as the two groups met each other halfway.
Seamus hugged Jeanette as he asked, “You two okay?
The police didn’t give you any trouble, did they?” Jeanette got the hug and said, “No.
They didn’t trouble us at all except for that freelancer.” “Should we file a complaint?” he asked.
“Don’t bother.
Let’s just go,” Jeanette said.
Reyna glanced nervously between the couple, wondering what the plan was.
She was so focused on them that she didn’t notice Waylon approaching her from the side and nearly jumped out of her skin when he bumped shoulders with her.
“Sorry.
Didn’t mean to scare me like that,” he said as he backed away.
She waved her hands in front of her as she said, “No, it’s my fault for not paying attention.” Jeanette hadn’t been able to tell her anything without anyone listening, so she had no clue what they were going to do and what she was supposed to do.
They wouldn’t just leave the police station, right?
However, she was proven wrong as Seamus led them to the entrance of the police station.
Reyna tried to act nonchalant as she kept shooting glances at Seamus and Jeanette, looking for any hints of what the plan was supposed to be.
They had just reached the door when they heard a loud shout.
She flinched, thinking they had been caught.
Unexpectedly, she heard someone demand, “What possessed you to do something like that?
Are you insane?” The group shared a brief glance before looking back.
They apparently weren’t the only ones curious about what was going on as everyone was looking in the direction of the shout.
It was the freelancer, and he was currently being chewed out by what she assumed was his superior.
The man looked relaxed with his hands in his pockets while his companion looked ready to faint.
“Do you understand that your behavior reflects badly on this station?” the man’s superior asked.
“What’s your station got to do with me?
I’m just a freelancer.
Not even from here,” the man said.
“Just because you weren’t born in the empire doesn’t mean you’re not a citizen.
You still need to abide by the rules, especially this station’s,” the man’s superior lectured him.
The freelancer wasn’t a natural-born citizen?
She hadn’t expected that.
It wasn’t that there weren’t people from other countries living in the empire.
It was completely normal.
It was just that she didn’t think someone who wasn’t born in the empire could get a position as a police officer.
Actually, now that she thought about it, he technically wasn’t one.
He was just a freelancer hired by the police to work for them.
“Then just end my contract if you don’t like how I work,” the man said.
The man’s superior, seemingly having enough of the man’s attitude, stormed off, but not without giving one last warning.
“I’m telling you.
Don’t act on your own.
Otherwise, we will have to cut all cooperation with you.” Everyone stared for several moments before most returned to what they were doing.
Whispers filled the room, obviously about what had just happened, and Reyna could barely make out anything that was being said.
Suddenly, the man turned to look in Reyna and her group’s direction, making her flinch.
Embarrassed that she had been caught looking, she immediately looked away.
“Let’s hurry and leave,” she said in a small voice.
Unfortunately, the man chose that moment to call out, “Wait.”
