The high-stakes standoff on the sand burned with intense, unyielding heat.
Eagre remained backed against his boulder, his tail coiled beneath him like a stuck spring while his webbed hand stayed glued over his bitten shoulder.
His glowing emerald eyes flickered back and forth between Saira’s frizzy halo of hair and the two indestructible coconuts in the damp sand between them.
Saira sat back on her heels near her collapsing palm-frond villa, her jaw set, her sapphire eyes narrowed into sharp, calculating slits as her erratic, hyperactive mind scrambled to make sense of the absurdity of the morning.
Her brain, always eager to dodge humiliating realities like getting knocked out by falling fruit or biting an immortal aquatic entity in her sleep, hit upon a magnificent, breathtaking realization.
The pieces fell into place like a masterfully constructed house of cards.
The way he had been wrapped around her.
The protective clasp of his arm over her waist.
The undeniable truth that an ancient, terrifying sea-god had left the safety of his cool oceanic domain just to lie on a sun-scorched beach, cradling her against his chest all night long.
A slow, dangerously triumphant grin began to spread across Saira’s sunburnt face.
“Oh,” she breathed, her voice dropped into a smooth, melodic purr as she crossed her arms over her chest and leaned back with supreme, unearned confidence.
“Oh, I see what this is now.” Eagre’s fins flared defensively.
“You see what what is?
Stop looking at me like that.
You look like a starved gull eyeing an abandoned breadcrumb.” “Please, fish-boy, you don’t have to hide behind your furious sea-god persona anymore,” Saira said, tossing her frizzy hair over her shoulder with an air of aristocratic pity.
She gestured magnanimously between the two of them.
“The evidence is overwhelming.
The moonlight, the delicate embrace, the desperate need for physical closeness…it’s completely understandable, really.
I am, after all, a woman of exceptional high society, remarkable intellect, and flawless architectural talent.
It was only a matter of time before you fell hopelessly, madly in love with me.” Eagre froze.
His mouth opened, closed, and then opened again, issuing a sound akin to a dying sea breeze whistling through a rusty pipe.
“I…what?!
” He shrieked, his voice cracking violently on the second word.
“It’s okay!
You don’t need to be embarrassed!” Saira continued, getting to her feet and dusting off her torn skirt with aristocratic flair.
She took a slow, theatrical step toward the tide line, placing a hand gently over her heart.
“Living alone in the abyss must be dreadfully lonely.
And then I arrived-a shinning beacon of civilization, grace, beautiful, and luxury estate ownership.
You couldn’t resist.
You waited until I was rendered unconscious by an unfortunate, localized fruit incident, and you swooped in to cuddle me under the stars!” “I was cold!
” Eagre roared, his face flushing a furious, neon-blue that extended all the way to the tips of his iridescent ear-fins.
He slammed a heavy fist into the water, sending towering curtain of spray into the air.
“I am a cold-blooded aquatic entity!
The night temperature dropped!
You were emitting an obscene amount of disgusting human body heat!
You were nothing more than a glorified, fleshy hot-water bottle!” Saira held up a delicate, dismissive hand, nodding with deep, infuriating empathy.
“Shh,shh.
Denial is a natural stage of sudden, overwhelming passion,” she coaxed, taking another step forward and winking at him with a kissy face.
“You don’t have to make up tragic biological excuses, salmon-boy.
It’s sweet, really.
A bit forward, considering we haven’t even had a formal courtly introduction or a proper dinner date, but I admire the sheer, raw desperation of your affection.” “Desperation?!” Eagre slammed both hands against his boulder, thrusting his chest out as his glowing eyes flared with apocalyptic rage.
“I am the Terror of Aethel!
I have commanded abyssal trenches that would crush your fragile human bones into dust!
I do not cuddle!
I do not court !
And I most certainly do not possess feelings for a feral, shipwrecked land-pest who lives in a pile of rotting sticks and bites my shoulder like a rabid dog!” “Actions speak louder than ancient aquatic titles, my dear sardine,” Saira replied smoothly, resting her hands on her hips and gesturing toward the sand where they had been laying seconds prior.
“Explain the tail, then.
You had me wrapped up like a precious holiday gift.
Explain the chin on my head!
You were practically purring!” “I WAS NOT PURRING!
I HAD A CONCUSSION!” Eagre screamed, throwing his hands to the sky as if begging the ocean heavens for a swift, merciful lightning strike.
“A second coconut fell on my head while I was celebrating your humiliating defeat!
I lost consciousness!
My nervous system went into involuntary survival mode!
If anything, you took advantage of my vulnerable, concussed state to use my luxurious scales as a blanket!” Saira gasped, clutching her chest as if struck by a physical blow.
“I?
Taking advantage of you?” She scoffed dramatically, turning her face to the sky.
“I am a victim of unsolicited sea-god snuggles!
I wake up to find an aquatic beast spooning me on my own private property, and when I try to process your unrequited adoration, you insult my honour!
I should charge you rent for using my side as a mattress!” From his high perch atop the coastal boulder, Crabby watched the escalating shout-fest with absolute, unwavering detachment.
He raised his left pincer, clicked it once against his coconut shell helmet, and casually adjusted his position to get a better view of the theatrical collapse of human-divine relations.
“I would rather submerge myself in a volcano than spend another second within five feet of your suffocating human warmth!” Eagre snarled, his gills pumping rapidly as he began to drag his massive tail back toward the safety of the deep turquoise water.
“Oh, go ahead!
Run away from your true feelings!” Saira yelled after him, strutting right down to the water’s edge and shaking a dusty fist at his retreating form.
“Go back to your dark, lonely trench and think about what you’re missing!
But mark my words, Eager-the next time you feel the urge to spoon the island owner, at least bring big pink pearls first!” Eagre let out a long, agonized, soundless roar toward the sky, slapped his broad tail against the surface of the sea with the force of a thunderclap, and vanished beneath the waves in a massive, chaotic explosion of white foam.
Saira stood triumphantly in the wet sand, her silver frizzy hair blowing in the sea breeze, a smug, completely delusional smile plastered across her face.
“Works every time, Crabby,” Saira whispered, wiping a speck of sea spray from her nose as she turned back toward her shelter.
“Keep ’em playing hard to get.” Crabby gave a single, slow blink of his eye stalks and went right back to chewing his kelp.
take care!
