As the night falls, the clouds gather across the sky with the half moon shining brightly.

On the second-floor windowsill of a secluded villa sat a boy with black hair.

He leaned against the frame, his hair falling softly over his brows, cheeks pale as snow, almond eyes round and bright, shimmering with a sly glint.Full novel: Sleep Early — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

With a swift motion, he slipped over the sill and into the room. Moonlight cascaded across his thin figure, but the floor below remained empty as no shadow followed.

The night wind stirred, brushing against his clothes, yet not even the hem of his garments stirred with a sound.

He looked like a person. Like a thief sneaking into someone else’s house. But more than that, he resembled a ghost.

A little ghost who specialized in pressing down on people in their sleep.

This sneaky little ghost, Mu Bai, peeked around at the glittering lights of the living room and let out a breath of awe.

The hall was opulent, wide to the point of extravagance. Styled in shades of black, the spotless marbles table sparkled under the blaze of the chandelier, dazzling to the eyes.

Yes! A new target, an actual CEO. He hadn’t come to the wrong place.

Mu Bai’s eyes lit up, impatient delight flashing in them as he drifted eagerly toward the bedroom, intent on finding his new prey.

For a ghost like him, survival depended on feeding on humans during their sleep. He draws in spirit energy, or else on incense offerings.

But fortune had not been kind to him. His last “bed-pressing target” had been a newly graduated manga artist, who stayed up all day and hardly slept at night.

Mu Bai had been starved for months, not even getting a proper mouthful to eat.

At last, hunger gnawed him into giving up on that one. He had overheard, while eavesdropping on a phone call, that his former host had an uncle.

An uncle who was a CEO, one who went to bed early without fail, woke early without exception, calm and self-disciplined to the extreme.

At that, Mu Bai’s eyes were practically burning with excitement. So tonight, the very moment darkness fell, he had wasted no time at all and hurried straight here.

Poking his head in curiosity, Mu Bai soon discovered his new target’s bedroom, and began to carefully observe the surroundings.

The main palette was black, white, and gray, steady and severe. The floor was laid with deep, dark-patterned wool.

Beside the gray bed stood a walnut desk, where a few English books lay sprawled across the chair. Apart from that, the space was clean and neat.

From the bathroom came the sound of running water, rushin and steady. Clearly, his new target was showering.

Mu Bai’s eyes gleamed brighter and brighter, almost bubbling over with joy.

His last host would drag himself to the bathroom at two or three in the morning, bathe half-dead, and only then collapse into bed like a dead man.

But now, it wasn’t even nine o’clock. The new host was already frsh from his shower, bedtime was just around the corner

Overjoyed, Mu Bai floated to the bed. Rolling up his sleeves, he perched on the pale-gray mattress and got to work, bustling earnestly about making the bed.

Just as he had done before, he smoothed every fold, tugged the corners taut, fussed and straightened until even the edges lay neat and flat. All he wished was that his new host might lie down soon and fall asleep.

Half an hour later, the bathroom door swung open, mist curling outward in a wave of warmth.

A man stepped out. Hair damp, strands scattered across his forehead, clad in black pajamas. His complexion was pale, his lashes lowered as

he toweled his hair, a string of purple sandalwood prayer beads wrapped around his wrist.

His face was strikingly fine, features sculpted sharp with edge, brows and nose well-defined. Even though buttoned up to the very top, his nightclothes did nothing to blunt the mature, ascetic air that clung to him.

Yan He draped the towel across his neck, one hand drying his hair, the other resting against the black doorframe. For a moment, he paused.

The door was ice-cold beneath his fingers, unnaturally chilled.

Lowering his gaze, he knew instantly that a yin energy was the cause.

His long eyes flicked across the room, faint annoyance flickering within. The aura around him grew colder still.

Yan He had always known that his body’s peculiar constitution drew unclean things like moths to flame.

Ever since childhood, vicious spirits with fangs bared and faces twisted had lunged at him, seeking to tear away the warmth of his life force.

Others had woven gruesome illusions, corpses and carnage conjured to shatter his mind and drive him into madness.

Just like now.

The whole house was fine, but the bedroom, the air was thick with yin energy. Without doubt, some ghost was lurking here with ill intention.

Yan He pushed the door open, his expression steady, prepared to face blood on the floor, or a hideous demon lunging, jaws dripping.

But when the door opened, nothing happened.

He shifted slightly, eyes lifting.

There was indeed a ghost.

But not like the one that he was expecting.

Rather, a small ghost bent over his bed, rear end sticking up, diligently making the sheets.

The little thing had even slipped off his shoes, as if afraid of dirtying the bedding.

For once, Yan He’s composed mask cracked, he froze in shock? Surprise?

The little ghost lay across the bed, staring up at him, the tip of his nose pressed red against the blanket, eyes shining like stars, brimming with anticipation.

Yan He had seen countless spirits.

But never one like this, staring at him so pitifully, exactly like his nephew when he was young, nose squashed to the glass outside a candy shop.

The ghost’s clothes were dusty gray, but his body and face were very clean. And his manner, it was so nervous yet so eager that it was almost endearing.

Mu Bai truly was nervous.

If this new target didn’t fall asleep early, then tonight he’d go hungry again.

But even after settling into bed, the man showed no sign of sleeping. Instead, he reached for the book on the nightstand and began to read it, slowly and calmly.

Mu Bai grews frantic.

Stretching his neck, he craned over to see what had the man so engrossed. But the pages were covered in strange squiggles, he couldn’t make out a single character.

With a sulky huff, he pulled back, muttering under his breath, “What kind of ghostly scribbles are these…”

Yan He turned a page, just in time to glimpse the little ghost’s fluffy head leaning forward, two tufts of hair sticking up like horns.

Idly, he rolled the beads around his wrist, expecting the ghost to finally show its fangs.

But no, the little thing only peered at the page, then muttered about “ghostly scribbles.”

Yan He stared at the dense lines of English text. For once, he was struck into silence.

Half an hour later, Mu Bai finally saw the man set the book aside and switch off the light.

Delighted, Mu Bai floated closer, waiting with bright eyes for his host to slip into sleep.

Yan He lay down, closing his eyes with calm indifference, completely accustomed to the sensation of a ghost’s stare.

He resolved to call a priest tomorrow to get rid of this nuisance.

The best way to deal with spirits was simple was to ignore them. They couldn’t kill him anyway.

At ten o’clock, under Mu Bai’s anxious gaze, the man’s breathing finally grew deep and steady. Sleep had taken him.

Mu Bai’s nose twitched. A rich, heady fragrance coiled around the man’s body, like a vortex of scent, dark and intoxicating and instantly setting his hunger.

It was the essence of human sleep, the food that sustained bed-pressing ghosts like him.

Starved for so long, Mu Bai’s resistance crumbled in an instant. Dizzy with need, he floated to the bed, stumbled forward, and flopped down beside the man.

His head pressed into the pillow before he even touched the man’s chest.

Too fragrant.

The richness spilled like an overturned jar of fine wine, flooding the air, sinking into his hair, his skin, his very bones.

Eyes hazy, Mu Bai buried his head into the pillow, drinking deeply.

He had meant to take only a sip. But hunger overpowered him, and his body wriggled closer, still closer, until he was sprawled against the man’s chest, feeding greedily.

Nuzzling into the man’s neck, he drank and sighs of satisfaction curling in his throat.

Soon but full at last, Mu Bai lay across the man’s chest, eyes half-lidded, expression dreamy.

His once-flat belly now bulged faintly, pale skin stretch taut and soft.

As the night deepened, he had no will to leave. Instead, he squirmed under the blanket, curling up against the warmth, and drifted into sweet, heavy slumber.

By three in the morning, Yan He awoke, chilled to the bone, limbs stiff from the cold.

He Switched on the light as he turned and then froze.

Beside him, a little ghost slept soundly. His blanket stolen away by the bundled up little ghost with rosy-cheeked.

One foot had kicked out rudely onto Yan He’s side, and the messy tuft of hair atop his head stuck up proudly in the air.

Yan He fell silent, staring at the very same ghost who had diligently made his bed earlier, now curled up domineeringly in his blanket, sleeping like he owned it.
