In the office, Yan He leaned back in his chair and dialed a number from his contacts.

The call connected almost instantly. A young man’s cheerful voice came through, laughing, “President Yan, long time no see! ”

Yan He gave a short greeting. His fingers tapped lightly against the desk, his voice low after a pause.Full novel: Sleep Early — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“Something from home followed me in.”

The man on the other end, Hong Hui, went quiet for a moment, then asked in serious voice, “You’re being followed again?”

Yan He gave a soft “mm.”

The Yan family had noticed his strange condition since he was a baby.

As an infant, he rarely cried or fussed, but often fell into deep sleep for days without waking.

Sometimes they would find him talking to thin air as if speaking to someone invisible.

Back then, the family had invited Master Hong Bai to take a look. With exorcisms and blessings, the master had driven away the evil spirits and even adjusted the feng shui of the Yan residence. Yan He’s condition improved somewhat after that.

But since his body carried extreme yin, and because the Yan family owed the master a favor, Master Hong Bai gave him a rare string of purple sandalwood prayer beads.

The beads could destroy any malicious spirit that dared approach him with killing intent, leaving nothing but scattered ashes.

Over the years, Yan He had unknowingly killed quite a few ghosts this way. Perhaps because of that, most spirits avoided him. He rarely had to trouble Master Hong Bai anymore.

Hong Hui was Master Hong Bai’s disciple and he knew about Yan He’s situation. After a moment’s thought, he asked in a grave tone,

“My master isn’t at the temple these days. Tell me, did that ghost tried to hurt you?”

Yan He thought about the ghost who stole his blanket last night, “…”

After a short silence, he finally admitted, hesitating, “…Not really.”

On the other end, Hong Hui’s voice stayed serious, “Huh? Nothing? What does that little ghost look like?”

Yan He replied, “Not very old, looks like a young boy? He doesn’t look vicious like the usual spirits, all bloody and terrifying.”

“Oh?” Hong Hui muttered in surprise, “Then what kind of ghost is it?”

A hanging ghost usually had its tongue sticking out and eyes rolled back.

A hungry ghost had a dried-up body and swollen belly.

Most spirits carried clear traits that made them easy to recognize.

But when Yan He recalled the little ghost curled up on his bed last night, sleeping so peacefully and innocently, his expression turned strange.

“…I couldn’t tell at all.”

Hong Hui was silent for a long while before sighing.

“My abilities are limited. I can’t calculate what kind of ghost this little one is. I’ll try to reach my master in the next few days. If I succeed, I’ll let you know immediately. Until then, keep a close eye on it. Once you know what kind of ghost it is, let me know. Things will be easier to handle.”

Yan He responded with a quiet “en.”

After hanging up, he leaned back against his chair, fingers still tapping on the desk. He seemed lost in thought, wondering what that little ghost could really be.

Meanwhile, in the suburban graveyard, the well-fed little ghost suddenly sneezed.

Sitting on a tree trunk, Mu Bai rubbed his nose and muttered,

“Who’s talking about me behind my back…”

But after thinking it about it for a while, he realized that it’s not possible. There was no one who would remember him. Well, other than that water ghost, Ah Sheng, who had always been on good terms with him.

Back in the Qianlong era, Mu Bai had been a young scholar heading to the capital for the imperial exams. But along the way, he encountered a flood.

He lost his life in the chaos, and when he woke again, he had already become a wandering ghost.

At the moment of death, his only thought had been how he hadn’t yet gained glory for his mother. He hadn’t yet become an official to make her proud.

Unfortunately when he opened his eyes again, he was already a ghost.

Beside him was another spirit who had also drowned in that flood.

That was Ah Sheng, a water ghost.

Unlike Mu Bai, who was nothing more than a small, weak bed-pressing spirit, Ah Sheng was much stronger by nature.

Mu Bai could only hide in graveyards with heavy yin during the day, but Ah Sheng could go out and steal incense offerings to sustain himself.

Every now and then, Ah Sheng even shared some offerings with Mu Bai. Without that, Mu Bai might have starved to death (He’s already dead, though) long time ago

Now perched on a tree, Mu Bai swung his legs, eyes bright as he counted down the hours till nightfall.

For the first time, he couldn’t wait for the sun to set as once darkness fell, he could eat again.

Just thinking of last night’s warmth from that human made his mouth water.

It had been so comfortable.

Like being frozen stiff in the middle of winter and suddenly stepping into a hot bath, the warmth had seeped into his very bones, so soothing he nearly sighed out loud.

Last night, he had been starving so He had eaten too quickly, gulping down the energy in a rush, not even savouring the taste.

Today he planned to savour it.

Finally, the sun sank. The city lights flickered on one by one.

At a villa, Mu Bai slipped in through the windowsill like smoke.

Tonight, he came earlier. The moment he opened the window, he was startled to found a round little thing rolling across the floor.

Mu bai stood on the sofa and quietly examined it. The strange thing automatically swept up the trash on the ground, then hummed its way into the bedroom.

The little ghost tilted his head, lips curling in amusement. The thing seemed really dumb, bumping into walls here and there.

After poking it curiously for a while, he was quickly distracted by another sound, the rush of running water.

The shower.

Mu Bai’s eyes lit up at once. He floated straight into the bedroom. Just like the night before, he carefully fussed over the bed until it was neat and tidy.

Then he sat waiting expectantly for his target to finish showering.

At first, he was patient. But his hunger soon grew unbearable. He found himself wishing his target would hurry up. Finally, he couldn’t hold back and crept to the bathroom door.

In the end, he pressed himself right against the glass, peeking inside.

The bathroom was wide and elegant, black-gold marble shining under the mist.

A tall man stood under the spray, shoulders broad, waist narrow, skin pale with faint muscle lines.

Yan He stood there with his eyes closed, water streaming down his face as he slicked his hair back from his forehead.

His features were sharp and refined, arched brows, straight nose, every line like a painting.

Mist has curled thick in the air. With eyes still shut, he pressed a black button to shut off the water.

As he lifted his head, he suddenly saw a little ghost plastered to the glass door, eyes shining as he stared straight at him.

Not hiding at all. Just staring openly.

Yan He: “…”

He paused, then calmly reached for a towel and wrapped it around his waist.

The little ghost lowered his head to look, then let out a sharp gasp of awe.

“So big! Like a mutated radish!”

His loud voice carried crystal clear through the glass.

Yan He froze. His hand slowly tightened the towel around his waist unconsciously.

At this point, he had a pretty good guess about what this little ghost was.

Eight or nine times out of ten, this was a little pervert ghost
