The little ghost lay on the bed, swinging his legs as he read his comic. The underpants he wore on the lower half of his body were worn thin from so long a use, the fabric reduced to a fragile layer.

That thin, translucent cloth clung to his plump, rounded curves, full and perky, like ripe, juicy peaches.

Yan He glanced at the little ghost’s tattered lower half, then at the meticulously stitched, soft gray robe covering his upper body. Perhaps because the offerings had been pocketed by some greedy evil ghost, the robe had arrived incomplete, leaving the little ghost with only a top half.Full novel: Sleep Early — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The man holding the prayer beads frowned, realizing he had been too gentle with the evil ghost that night. At three in the morning, he had driven half an hour into the outskirts to catch that ghost and burn offerings specifically for the little ghost.

Since Mu Bai was absent during the day, he had deliberately sent only a single set of offerings, so that no other ghost could snatch them.

The result? Mu Bai still could not wear the set properly. And that was nothing compared to the hardships he had endured in life; who knew how badly he might have been treated.

The little ghost lay on the bed, touching his own backside and feeling a little strange. It was as if something were staring at him, a chilly sensation. But when he turned his head, no other ghost was watching.

Mu Bai assumed it was just his imagination. After all, besides him, there were no other ghosts in the room. Even if there were, they would be focused on a new, punctual little ghost rather than staring at his bottom.

He closed the comic and, like always, burrowed under the covers, pressing his head against the fluffy pillow, waiting for the new target to go to sleep.

At two in the morning, Mu Bai slipped out through the slightly open window, as usual, oblivious that no sooner had he left than the bedroom light turned on. The man, in his pajamas, got up, changed clothes, grabbed his car keys, and drove out to the suburbs.

Perhaps because he had eliminated so many evil ghosts in recent days, there were none within a ten-mile radius of his home. Yan He still had to drive through the midnight fog to seek out any lingering evil spirits.

Half an hour later, the ghost on the ground, beads tight around his throat, wailed and shook his head, lifting his robe to show the man the underpants he wore, as if he wanted to prove he hadn’t stolen the little ghost’s new pair. Yan He looked away in disgust.

The lower half of the ghost’s clothing was clearly not the new robe he had burned for Mu Bai. Feeling the beads loosen slightly, the ghost cried out, “Master… I really didn’t wear that little ghost’s pants…”

Seeing the ghost’s blue-faced, tear-streaked expression, Yan He felt an exasperating sense of unfairness. Why did all ghosts differ so much? This one was desperate to prove his innocence, tears and snot mingling, insisting he hadn’t taken the little ghost’s pants. Perhaps another evil ghost had stolen them.

Yan He waved his hand, recalling the beads, and ordered the ghost away. Begrudgingly, it shuffled off, only to be called back moments later. With no choice, it returned, trembling and fearful, standing by the man’s side.

On the desolate mountain road, the man in the black overcoat crouched, burning premium paper money and silver wax. When finished, he said to the ghost, “Take these and give them to him.” The ghost, clutching the fine incense, dared not look closely, simply nodding obediently.

By the next evening, in the eerie graveyard, Mu Bai crouched on the ground, counting the incense sticks. When he reached the end, he drew a sharp breath, these were premium offerings, clearly not cheap, and yet people in the living world had burned them to him in bundles.

Whispering to the water ghost beside him, he said, “A-Sheng… do you think there’s really someone who died at the same time as me being taken by ghost messengers? Otherwise, how would these offerings reach me?”

The water ghost, expressionless, shoved some of the finest candles into his mouth, “Eat first.” Such premium incense, even if he went out to gather, could not be obtained in a single haul. Mu Bai swallowed the offerings whole. After a moment, he chose not to continue eating, instead carefully storing the incense.

The water ghost asked why he was putting them away. The little ghost replied sheepishly, “Save them for now… what if one day I get a wife? I can’t let her suffer…”

These were the best offerings he had ever received as a ghost. The water ghost considered this logical and even suggested, “Dig the hole bigger; maybe someone else will burn offerings for you later.” Excited, the little ghost eagerly followed the advice.

Not far off, the long-tongued ghost watched enviously. It shyly crept over, retracting its tongue in embarrassment, and asked, “How do I look? We’ve known each other for years; I can be your wife. I can do anything, you just give me some incense…” While saying this, it couldn’t help slurping, stretching its head toward the hole. Mu Bai froze.

The water ghost, unimpressed by the crooked, odd-looking ghost, tossed it away. Then a headless ghost floated forward, shyly asking Mu Bai if it could be his wife, willing to eat just a little incense.

Expressionless, the water ghost threw its headless companion out as well. The ghost wailed, vowing never to be Mu Bai’s wife while the water ghost was around.

With the long-tongued ghost involved, it didn’t take an afternoon for all the little ghosts in the graveyard to learn that Mu Bai had secretly stored incense for a future wife. Tempted by the incense, the ghosts gathered in droves, shyly claiming they could be his wife.

Mu Bai had never seen such a scene before, dozens of ghosts squished together, chattering, vying for the title of his wife, secretly sabotaging competitors. They yanked hair, twisted arms, tripped and tumbled, any trick went.

The little ghost jumped in fright, scattering, leaving a shoe behind as he fled to the villa. But even there, a crowd of little ghosts followed, pressing and jostling, all hungry.

After a hundred years of life, they cared little for propriety, full bellies came first. Mu Bai, pretty and charming, blushed as they begged to be his wife, each hoping for a share of incense. Such a windfall demanded full effort to claim.

Mu Bai pressed against the glass window, trying to slip inside, only for the little ghosts behind him to grab his hand and plead him not to go. He could make them his little wives, but the amount of incense each received had to be carefully balanced.

If too little, they would fight for the position of his “big wife.” Just as he turned, a dozen little ghosts pressed around him, shouting for him to choose the “big wife.” Younger ghosts, knowing they had no chance, began dividing up the leftover slots, aware that the higher the rank of the wife, the more incense she would get.

As Yan He returned from work that evening, he stopped at the paper-offering shop in the alley to buy a few bundles of premium paper money for the trunk. By the time he returned, dusk had fallen.

Glancing at his watch, he wondered when the little ghost would appear tonight. Unlike before, it came late, yet tonight it had arrived unusually early. He parked in the courtyard, surprised to see the little ghosts crowding around the glass windows.

His little ghost was in the center, adored by a mass of others, all clamoring and shouting.

One little ghost snapped, “I’m Mu Bai’s eighteenth wife! You go behind me!” Another yelled, “I’m the big wife, don’t step on me! Mu Bai just touched my hand! I’m the big wife!”

A third wailed, “I’m the second wife, please stop fighting me!” The courtyard erupted into chaos, little ghosts yanking hair, arms, and shouting over who could be his wife.

Mu Bai, pressed and red-faced, struggled through the throng, one shoe left behind in the mess, hair and clothes disheveled. Seeing the man at the gate, he floated toward him, hiding behind Yan He.

The crowd of little ghosts stopped instantly, faces full of astonishment, as the tall man in a black suit, trousers hugging long legs, shoulders broad and waist narrow, regarded them coldly.

After a pause, a spirit was pushed forward by the others, whispering, “You’re the big wife. Go get him…”

The chaos, tension, and absurdity of it all made Mu Bai’s night seem even stranger, yet strangely fitting in this world of mischievous little ghosts.
