Humans die for wealth; birds die for food.
The little ghosts who had previously fought tooth and nail over the title of “big wife” were now shoving and pushing each other.
In the end, they managed to shove the underworld ghost out. Quietly, they encouraged it to act in the role of the “big wife” and steal Mu Bai away from the man standing in front of them.
The underworld ghost stepped back a few paces, shoving the little ghost who had contested most fiercely against him. “You go… I’ll give the big wife title to you.”
The little faceless ghost that had been shoved: “…” Immediately, it turned to push another little ghost by its side. “You go… I’m not a big wife…”
“You go! You go… ”
“I’m the second wife! You go! You go… ”
Back and forth they went, shoving each other like snails retreating, slowly inching backward, until they had finally spilled out of the courtyard. No one dared to glance at the man in the yard, all retreating while pushing and shoving one another.
Yan He stood calmly in the center of the courtyard, watching the eighteen little ghosts vying to “act as the big wife” and encourage each other to steal Mu Bai, while also herding the little ghost behind him.
Wait. No. That made nineteen wives. The nineteenth had no head and had hidden behind the group of ghosts, which was why he hadn’t counted it earlier.
The little ghost clung tightly to his sleeve, only daring to peek his head out and timidly watch the group of little ghosts.
Two minutes later, the shoving, pushing little ghosts had completely retreated, vanishing from the courtyard at lightning speed.
Yan He glanced back at the little ghost who had hunted down all nineteen “wives.” His hair was messy, clothes disheveled, one hand clutching the robe tightly, cheeks bright red, and round apricot eyes brimming with embarrassed panic.
He had run so fast he had even lost his shoes, floating barefoot behind Yan He. Perhaps feeling it improper to be barefoot, the little ghost awkwardly crossed his own feet while floating, the red-and-white arches stretched tight, looking somewhat pitiful.
All this effort just to claim nineteen “wives.” What was there to be pitiful about? Yan He lightly ground his teeth. Yesterday, when the little ghost had been lying on the bed swinging his legs, he should have given those plump, rounded curves a few good smacks, light but firm.
Then he could have sorted “big wife” and “small wife.” Listening to the repeated cries of “wife! wife!” and trying to manage nineteen “wives” at once, how could anyone cope?
Mu Bai sniffled, floating in the air with a deflated expression, tugging at his messy clothes. No wonder, long ago, his mother had worried about him going to the capital to take the exams.
He remembered her sitting in a chair, holding her forehead, and saying anxiously, “Someone like you, going to the capital, would be eaten alive.” At the time, he had been stuffing a bite of osmanthus cake into his mouth and mumbled, “Don’t worry, Mother. I’ll earn you a titled husband.”
Now, looking at just managing a crowd of little ghosts, he could see he would be eaten alive.
Mu Bai glumly followed Yan He into the villa, floating to the TV screen and brushing at his messy hair. Since he had no shoes, he tapped his bare feet before stepping onto the sofa.
The little ghost sat obediently on the sofa, watching the TV light up, a device that usually only ran on weekends. The man held the remote, putting on a horror movie.
Not only that, he drew the curtains and turned off the lights, plunging the spacious living room into darkness, leaving only the horrifying blood effects on the screen, amplified by the 360-degree surround sound of the built-in home theater.
At first, Mu Bai hugged a cushion, legs crossed, thinking as a little ghost, he had seen every possible scene. Until he realized the film was about an unfaithful husband being killed by his big, second, and third wives in concert.
A chill ran down the back of his head. “….”
Carefully, he edged closer to the man. When he looked up, the screen showed the big wife, expressionless, holding a knife, covered in blood, stabbing again and again. Blood spurted everywhere, splattering the screen. Mu Bai swallowed hard, pressing closer to the man.
On the huge screen, the almost hacked to pieces husband dangled, bright red blood dripping to the floor. As he struggled, he muttered in regret, lamenting his infidelity, cheating on his wife, bringing mistresses home, provoking her.
By the end of the movie, the terrified little ghost had buried his head firmly in the man’s chest, like hugging a tree-kangaroo, refusing to lift it.
Yan He glanced at the movie, expressionless, silently giving it a five-star rating. The little ghost had seen ghosts fighting, breaking arms and legs, but never such blood-soaked scenes. Blood spewed out on the screen as if it were free.
When the movie ended, the little ghost lifted his head, eyes wide, still clinging to the man. From then on, whatever Yan He did, he stayed attached, following him to the study, helping with cooking, even into the bathroom.
In the bathroom, the normally stoic man suddenly froze, standing perfectly still. Mu Bai, draped over Yan He’s shoulder, peeked curiously. The man silently rested a hand on his belt, not moving further.
Not going to the bathroom?
The little ghost patiently waited, but after a while, still nothing. He blew two gentle whistles near the man’s ear.
The man: “…”
Seeing no reaction, Mu Bai puffed his cheeks and blew one long, sharp whistle. Yan He closed his eyes slightly, as if restraining himself.
Mu Bai finally realized the man couldn’t hear his whistles, and he felt a twinge of regret. His whistling had been excellent, everyone he had played it for before had praised it.
If the man could hear, he would have gone to the bathroom long ago, without having to stand by the toilet and stew like this.
The little ghost jumped down, muttering to himself as he went outside to practice his whistling.
Not long after, when it was time for the man to shower, the little ghost sat on the glass door, swinging his legs and watching him.
As soon as Yan He glanced up, he could see the little ghost staring at him, even curiously glancing downward, seemingly waiting for him to pull down his pants.
Yan He: “……”
Calmly, he reached out and with a swift motion pulled down the shower curtain that had never been drawn from the glass door.
The little ghost let out a small “Ah,” apparently a little disappointed.
The overhead shower quickly sprayed hot water, filling the bathroom with mist and steam.
As Yan He rinsed the foam from his hair with closed eyes, he suddenly felt a familiar cool presence beside him.
It was the little ghost.
His eyelids twitched. He rinsed the foam from his hair, opened his eyes, and saw the little ghost floating beside him, holding a gray robe, lifting his red-and-white feet, and muttering: “Squish a little… squish a little… let me wash too…”
The little ghost held the robe seriously, carefully washing the feet that had wandered barefoot everywhere that night. After finishing, he cheerfully stomped on the bath mat by the door, satisfied, then climbed back onto the glass door to watch Yan He.
Once Yan He finished rinsing, he pushed open the bathroom door and saw the little ghost slip down from the glass door and cling to him.
Ghosts don’t have the concept of bathing. Perhaps because this little ghost came from a refined family, he subconsciously had the idea of removing shoes before getting into bed.
Yan He brought the clean little ghost to bed, watching as he rolled and flopped comfortably across the covers.
Late at night, the little ghost still slept soundly. Yan He, wearing his sleepwear, gently lifted the blanket and, without much effort, measured the little ghost’s feet while he slept. The little ghost had his legs resting on top of the blanket, snoring softly, sleeping deeply.
Yan He measured the little ghost’s feet, then picked up a notepad from the bedside table and jotted down a few numbers. He had never raised anyone before.
Last time, when he burned a set of clothes, he forgot to burn the shoes as well. He’d need to ask his brother what else should be prepared when raising a child, aside from clothes and pants.
After some thought, he jotted down a few more measurements in the notepad before turning off the light and going to sleep.
The next day, at three in the morning.
On the desolate mountain road, the underworld ghost squatted on the ground, holding a pair of finely crafted shoes in his arms.
In front of him, the man burned paper money, his sharp features flickering in the candlelight, looking slightly unreal.
Once he finished burning the finest paper money, the man lifted his gaze and said calmly: “After you deliver these, stay close to him.”
He wanted to see how the little ghost had managed to gather all nineteen “wives.”
The underworld ghost nodded repeatedly, promising he would stay near the little ghost all day, observing his reactions to offerings and paper money.
Yan He brushed the incense ash from his fingers, raised his hand, and signaled for him to leave.
The underworld ghost didn’t dare linger and immediately floated off, clutching the shoes and incense.
The next day, at dusk.
Once again, a few bundles of premium incense and a pair of fine boots were placed near the grave. Shui Gui had grown accustomed to this, expressionless as he picked up the boots, preparing to help Mu Bai put them on.
Mu Bai stared at the perfectly fitting shoes with delight, thanking the person who had burned the wrong items for him.
Late at night, the little ghost, excited in his new shoes, climbed through the window. He seemed to adore the shoes. When he reached the bed, he carefully placed them at the foot before getting in. Yan He watched, amused, as the little ghost crouched to arrange the shoes properly before settling in.
If he was this excited just putting on shoes, how thrilled would he be when receiving them? One could only imagine what he’d say.
At three in the morning, on the desolate mountain road, the underworld ghost hunched before the man. Tonight, the man seemed in a particularly good mood; his usually indifferent expression had softened a bit.
He asked: “What did the little ghost say when he received the offerings?”
The underworld ghost puffed himself up, eager to please, and replied eagerly: “The little ghost was ecstatic. He also respects you greatly, saying you are a kind, virtuous man, and that next life he wants to be reborn as your son.
He even said he would study and learn painting, so that if reborn as your son, he could grow up and earn a lot of money to support you!”
