‘Run! Run quickly!!’ That was the only frantic thought racing through the little ghost’s mind.

He knew all too well that if he and this man were caught together, then to that savage evil spirit, the two of them combined would be nothing more than a lavish feast, a complete nourishing tonic, pure essence and soul all in one.

Terrified to the point of losing his wits, the little ghost flew desperately, darting upward until he landed right on top of Yan He’s head.Full novel: Sleep Early — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

He clung there in sheer panic, yanking wildly at the man’s hair as though he could somehow drag him along in their frantic flight for survival.

But the man only stumbled slightly at first, then stood utterly motionless.

The little ghost, bewildered and more frightened than ever, lowered his head to look. Only then did he realize that his hand had passed straight through the man’s hair.

He couldn’t actually touch him at all. His earlier stumble must have been no more than his own desperate imagination.

Not far away, the green-faced, fanged evil spirit stood, exuding a chilling aura of death and dread.

The little ghost trembled violently, perched atop the man’s head, his skinny legs quaking so hard he thought he might fall. Stiffly, almost against his will, he tilted his head up to look.

But what he saw made his blood run cold.

The evil spirit, who only moments ago had been radiating menace, now looked equally shaken. It stood rooted in place, not daring to move, its eyes locked on the sight before it: the pale-faced little ghost sitting astride the head of a notorious god of slaughter.

This was the same god of slaughter who, not long ago, had so casually and effortlessly used a strand of prayer beads to strangle him half to death, leaving him writhing in agony on the floor.

And now, this same fearsome being had a scrawny little ghost perched awkwardly on his head, tugging anxiously at his hair like a frightened child clinging to its parent.

The evil spirit’s expression twisted with disbelief and pain. What on earth is that little ghost so afraid of?

Shouldn’t the one trembling in terror right now be him, the evil spirit, instead?

That little ghost actually dared to sit on the god of slaughter’s head!

If this terrifying man were to take offense at being used as a perch, the evil spirit was certain he wouldn’t live to see another breath. He’d be ground to dust and scattered to the winds before he could even cry out.

Meanwhile, Yan He himself was speechless, “…”

The little ghost had no weight, no tangible presence, he couldn’t truly touch him. But when he clambered onto his head, that all-too-familiar chill of ghostly energy still jolted Yan He enough to make him stagger.

After all, in his entire life, never once had a ghost dared to climb atop his head and treat him like a chair.

And he certainly had never imagined that day would come.

It was three o’clock in the morning.

Inside the brightly lit bedroom, a ghost and an evil spirit and a man stood locked in an eerie stalemate.

Yan He could clearly sense the little ghost on his head trembling so violently that his legs might give out at any moment. Yet, surprisingly, the little thing clung there stubbornly, refusing to flee.

Subtly, Yan He flicked a glance at the evil spirit across the room, giving him a small, deliberate signal.

The evil spirit blinked, confused. Misunderstanding, it hesitantly took two steps forward, trying to decipher what the man meant.

Instantly, the little ghost grew even more petrified, nearly scrambling upright on top of Yan He’s head in sheer fright.

Yan He’s eyes turned cold. He fixed the evil spirit with a sharp, accusing stare, his expression carrying a faint air of reprimand as though silently blaming him for frightening the timid little ghost.

The evil spirit faltered.

“…”

It dared not move closer. Instead, trembling all over, it shuffled backward several steps.

From his precarious perch, the little ghost also glared timidly at the monster. And when he saw it retreat, his confidence surged ever so slightly. Summoning all his courage, he bared his tiny teeth and gave the evil spirit a fierce glare of his own.

Well… if there’s no running away anyway, might as well look scary, he thought.

The evil spirit stared at him, the pale-faced, delicate little ghost with wide eyes flashing defiantly as he perched atop the god of slaughter’s head.

It was a ridiculous sight, like a kitten crouching on a tiger’s skull, baring its milk teeth as though it were ferocious.

The god of slaughter flicked his eyes meaningfully again.

This time, the evil spirit understood perfectly.

Oh.

He was telling him to get lost.

Without a moment’s hesitation, the terrified creature spun on its heel and bolted straight for the window, fleeing without daring to linger even a heartbeat longer.

The little ghost, still mid-snarl, froze in place. He blinked in astonishment as the savage, fanged monster he had dreaded moments earlier suddenly wore an expression of pure horror.

Within seconds, it was gone! vanishing out the window in a panic that looked exactly like his own desperate escape earlier.

Swallowing nervously, the little ghost reached up and gingerly touched his teeth.

Were my fangs really that terrifying?

Even as he wondered, Mu Bai lowered his hand, still shaken. No matter how much he thought about it, he couldn’t quite believe it was his own fierce display that had sent the evil spirit packing.

But apart from himself, there was only one other presence left in the room…

Slowly, Mu Bai glanced down. His eyes landed on the man beneath him. The man’s expression was calm and impassive, his face betraying no hint of the recent confrontation.

As if nothing unusual had occurred at all, he even went so far as to casually shut the window that the evil spirit had fled through, showing not the slightest awareness that a monster had even been in the room.

Remembering how earlier the man had gone so far as to consult a bald monk just to deal with him, Mu Bai set aside his suspicions.

After all, this was someone who was terrified even of a mere bed-pressing ghost like himself. Surely, if he truly saw an evil spirit, he’d be ten times more frightened.

Still perched on the man’s head, Mu Bai followed nervously as he closed the window, his heart pounding. He half-expected at any second for that green-faced, fanged monster to burst back inside.

The little ghost was constantly on guard, ready to bare his fangs at any moment.

Fortunately, until the man closed the window, the evil spirit never reappeared.

Yan He watched as the little ghost jumped down from his head and ran straight to the huge mirror, gazing in awe at his own reflection while fiddling with his fangs.

Yan He: “…”

The little ghost poked and prodded at his teeth, mumbling to himself in low whispers.

It wasn’t until the lights were turned off that the little ghost scuttled back to bed, crawling in beside him.

Under the faint moonlight seeping through the window, Yan He could see the little ghost lying on his stomach, still touching his own teeth with a look of pure delight, cherishing them as if they were precious gems.

He focused slightly, catching the soft muttering coming from the little ghost’s lips.

The little ghost was mumbling that if he had known he was this powerful, he would have gone out with A-Sheng earlier and pulled off something big.

Yan He’s expression cooled. A-Sheng again. That wild ghost.

Just what kind of relationship did that little ghost have with A-Sheng, to keep mentioning him like that?

Yan He closed his eyes, and after a while, he felt a familiar chill pressing closer.

He didn’t need to open his eyes to know, it was the little ghost again.

Yan He’s expression softened a little. Whatever that “A-Sheng” was, what did it matter? When the evil spirit showed up, the little ghost still clung to him for safety.

Whether he sat on his head or lay beside him, it wasn’t much of a difference.

The next morning, in the daylight.

At the cemetery, the little ghost was chattering excitedly to the water ghost in front of him. “That evil spirit got scared off by me, just like that, ran for his life!”

The water ghost didn’t quite believe him. After all, evil spirits weren’t so easily frightened away.

He suspected the little ghost must have accidentally run into something that made the spirit wary enough to flee.

Still, the water ghost always humored him. He nodded, face as expressionless as ever, and said flatly, “Impressive.”

The little ghost rubbed his teeth, laughing. “Honestly, I didn’t even know I could get that fierce when I got angry…”

“Seems like from now on, I can take you anywhere I want,” the water ghost said lazily.

Meanwhile, elsewhere…

A sleek black Maybach glided smoothly down the road.

Inside, the secretary, Du Ping, was delivering his routine report on the day’s upcoming schedule.

“This afternoon at three o’clock, you have a meeting with President Lin of the Lin Group”

In the backseat, the man leaned against the chair, eyes closed, his sharp nose casting a deep shadow across his strikingly handsome profile.

Suddenly, Yan He’s eyes snapped open. His brow furrowed, and he interrupted curtly, “Wait. Stop there. Tell me the schedule for the day after tomorrow again.”

Du Ping blinked in surprise, but quickly responded.

“Yes, sir.”

“The day after tomorrow, at two in the afternoon, you are scheduled for a business trip to S City. The trip will last for three days…”

Yan He’s frown deepened.

“Three days?” he repeated.

“Yes,” Du Ping answered carefully. “At least three days. It’s an important conference. You were invited last year as well…. ”

But in the back seat, Yan He had fallen silent. His fingers turned the prayer beads wound around his hand, pressing them against the base of his thumb as his thoughts drifted.

He thought of the little ghost who appeared every night, lying across him, pressing him down.

He remembered that time when he himself had slipped out in the middle of the night. Unable to find him, the little ghost had panicked so badly he’d sat in the wardrobe the entire day, legs crossed and face tense, refusing to move.

Yan He’s throat bobbed with a subtle motion. One hand rose to press against his temple.

If I disappear for three days this time… who knows what chaos that little ghost might cause?

His secretary, Du Ping, seemed to catch a glimmer of his boss’s concern. He wisely held his tongue, waiting silently for instructions.

But after a long pause, the man’s low, resonant voice finally sounded, “As for the business trip, arrange for the meeting to be held online tomorrow night.”

Du Ping was briefly puzzled, but quickly lowered his head and acknowledged the order with the utmost respect.

Eight o’clock that evening.

In the study, a video conference was underway.

The distorted voices of subordinates carried through the speakers. The man sat back slightly in his chair, his voice low and magnetic, every word distinct. Occasionally he interjected with a question, but most of the time, he listened quietly.

Then, out of the corner of his eye, he caught a familiar shadow.

The little ghost had arrived.

Moving with practiced ease, the ghost clambered onto the desk, found his usual spot, and began flipping through a storybook as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

The meeting neared its conclusion.

Sitting straight, Yan He finally raised his gaze to the group of subordinates onscreen and said, “Now, let’s move on to….. ”

“Let’s talk about the business trip the day after tomorrow.”

The people in the video conference held their breath as their boss’s voice grew heavy with emphasis, “The day after tomorrow, I’ll be leaving for S City. The trip will last three days.”

Almost word for word, he repeated slowly, “Three days. Day and night. I’ll be in S City continuously, without returning home.”

The secretaries listening looked bewildered, their faces blank. They could only keep their eyes fixed on him, waiting for some kind of explanation.

When Yan He finished stressing those words, he lifted his eyes. On the desk, the little ghost was still happily flipping through a comic book, completely oblivious to the gravity of what he had just said.

“…”

Yan He was silent for a while, then added calmly,

“For those three days, I won’t be at home.”

At last, the little ghost raised his head. His expression was dazed, as though only now realizing what those words meant.

The secretaries, meanwhile, could only watch in confusion as their normally composed, serious boss suddenly projected a large digital map onto the big screen.

He began explaining the flight path from Jin City to S City in painstaking detail.

Halfway through, he even spoke into the air, saying sternly, “Listen carefully,” as if he were instructing someone invisible to memorize the general route.

Five minutes later, Yan He glanced at the little ghost.

The ghost had dutifully turned his head toward the map once, then promptly turned back, completely absorbed in his comic book.

Yan He pressed his fingers against his brow. Inwardly, he sighed. Forget it. Worst case, I’ll just have that evil spirit run extra errands, burn more incense, deliver offerings. At least that way, this little ghost won’t starve while I’m gone.

With that thought, he raised his head again, speaking to his subordinates in the meeting, “That’s all for today. Thank you for your hard work.”

The staff on screen nodded quickly, and not long after, the video call ended with the screen fading to black.

Mu Bai, still flipping through his comic, muttered to himself in admiration: My new target really has it rough. Imagine having to fly all the way across the sea just to work. Truly exhausting.

That very night, the little ghost crawled into bed early. He counted carefully, he only had about two nights left to press down on the man before he left. So these two nights, he had to make sure he was absolutely full and satisfied.

Thus, when Yan He entered the bedroom, what he saw was the little ghost already curled under the covers. But instead of sleeping, he was puffing out his cheeks, blowing furiously at the aromatherapy candle on the nightstand.

Yan He’s fingers lingered lightly on the doorknob. Half-lidded eyes softened with a faint thought: So, he still can’t quite bear to part with me.

Otherwise, why would he lie there, just like before, helping me blow on the candle so I can rest better?

On the bed, Mu Bai’s cheeks bulged with effort as he huffed at the scented candle. Inside, he muttered: Hurry up and light, hurry up! Once he’s asleep, I can finally eat properly!

And so two nights passed like this.

During those two nights, Mu Bai had the anxious air of someone eating their last stores of food. Long before bedtime, he would already crawl onto the bed, waiting eagerly for the man to fall asleep.

Yan He only assumed it was because the little ghost was growing more reluctant to leave him.

Even his beloved comic books and TV dramas were abandoned at night, he simply lay obediently in bed, waiting.

Yan He felt a subtle stirring of emotion. His mood was softer than usual. So much so, that on the last night before leaving, when he burned incense and the fanged evil spirit appeared, even that creature seemed more pleasing to the eye.

First day of the trip.

Nine o’clock at night.

In his S City hotel room, Yan He sat on the bed, towel in hand, drying his hair. He wondered idly if the little ghost had, as usual, rushed to the villa, only to find it empty, no one there.

Second day of the trip.

Two o’clock in the morning.

Yan He awoke suddenly in his hotel bed. Still half-asleep, he reached out by instinct to pull the quilt over the little ghost lying beside him, only to grasp empty air.

Third day of the trip.

Eight o’clock in the evening.

Sitting in the back seat of his car, Yan He suddenly remembered the robotic vacuum cleaner at home, which could be monitored through his phone. Opening the app, he checked the real-time movements of the device.

As expected, the vacuum was currently roaming all over the villa.

The corner of Yan He’s lips curved faintly upward. He didn’t need to guess to know that the little ghost was very likely perched cross-legged on top of it, riding it around the house like a toy.

He checked the tracking map on the app. Over the past two days, the robot’s favorite destination had been his bedroom.

Sometimes it would sweep that room several times a day, circling round and round as if refusing to leave.

Yan He pictured it, the little ghost endlessly riding circles in his bedroom until the floorboards were worn thin and the curve of his lips only deepened.

But thankfully, tomorrow night he would return.

The little ghost wouldn’t have to sit all alone on a robot vacuum, circling endlessly in his absence.

Yan He lifted his gaze slightly, looking out at the glittering nightscape of S City. To his surprise, a strange warmth flickered in his chest, an odd sense that perhaps, back home, someone was waiting for him.

Even if that “someone” wasn’t human.

But rather, a little ghost who pressed down on his bed.

The following night, at eight o’clock.

A black Maybach sped smoothly along the winding mountain road.

At a red light, Yan He glanced at his wristwatch. By eight-thirty, the car finally rolled into the courtyard.

He stepped out, opened the trunk, and pulled out his suitcase.

As he walked toward the villa, he felt it immediately, a familiar ghostly aura lingering inside.

The little ghost was waiting for him.

This realization softened his usually calm, impassive face with a rare trace of joy.

But when he unlocked the electronic door and stepped inside, suitcase trailing behind, his footsteps slowed.

The living room was empty.

The ghostly aura was not there, but upstairs, on the third floor.

Pulling the suitcase along, Yan He climbed toward the rooftop swimming pool.

Under the bright lights, the water shimmered with ripples.

And floating serenely in the pool was a water ghost, dressed in gray shorts, his face utterly expressionless as he bobbed with the waves.

At the sound of the suitcase wheels rolling across the floor, the water ghost turned his head. Blank-faced, he stared at Yan He.

Yan He stood in silence, gazing at the unknown stray ghost drifting leisurely in his rooftop pool, now turning its head to look straight back at him.

The water ghost hesitated. In a flat voice, he muttered to the little ghost below, “I… I think he can see us.”

At that moment, bubbles rose to the surface. Mu Bai’s head popped up from beneath the water. He turned, spitting out a mouthful, and declared with absolute confidence:

“No worries!”

“He’s afraid of ghosts!”

“You can keep swimming in peace!”
