He said, “In the next life, he’ll become your son and repay you with good food and drink…”
The malicious ghost, who had been gesturing wildly a moment ago, let his voice shrink smaller and smaller.
He stole a cautious glance at the man before him, whose expression was growing darker by the second, what had started as mild had already iced over into something terrifying.
The man spoke in a gentle tone, but the words were far from kind. “So, you’re saying he’ll be my son in the next life?”
The malicious ghost hesitated, lips trembling, before he whispered nervously, “I… I suppose so…”
For their kind, nothing was sweeter than the sound of prosperity and a flourishing family line. Ghosts lived on such hopes.
Just the cycle of descendants offering paper money and sacrifices could feed them comfortably for a long while.
One son, plus nineteen wives, not to mention the children and grandchildren that would follow… With a lineage like that, one would never worry about incense or offerings in the afterlife.
For a malicious ghost, such fortune was enough to laugh oneself awake in a dream.
He looked at the man’s faint smile and, quaking inside, forced himself to echo warmly, “That truly would be wonderful.”
But though his lips curved, the man’s eyes carried no trace of laughter. His face was pale and cold, and terrifying to behold.
“L-Lord…” the malicious ghost stammered.
The man’s smile remained, his tone still soft, but the words struck like frost. “So in the next life he’s supposed to bring along nineteen wives to support me?”
“How could that possibly be a bad thing?”
The malicious ghost finally seemed to realize something, for his mouth snapped shut. Not another sound escaped him.
At that very moment, three in the morning, the little ghost was drifting sleepily from the villa back toward the cemetery, eyelids heavy with exhaustion.
Halfway through the journey, he suddenly realized he had forgotten to bring the rhino horn tip back to A-Sheng.
The weather had been growing hotter by the day, and A-Sheng had little energy to move in the graveyard. Even incense offerings no longer roused much appetite. The rhino horn tip was supposed to help him restore his spirit.
Mu Bai forced his eyes open and turned back toward the villa.
Before long, he arrived as usual at the window of the bedroom, yawning as he slipped inside. The room was pitch-dark, lit only by the faint moonlight spilling through the glass.
Mu Bai floated to the nightstand, picked up the rhino horn tip, and tucked it into the folds of his oversized robe.
Having finished, the little ghost thought to do one last considerate act before leaving, tucking in his new target’s blanket.
But when he turned, his body froze. The wide, pale-gray bed was empty. Not a trace of the man.
Mu Bai’s eyes widened. He drifted to the bathroom, only to find it vacant as well.
Five minutes later, he had checked the entire villa from top to bottom. Not a shadow of the man remained.
Mu Bai nearly dropped in fright.
Three-thirty in the morning. Where could his new target possibly be if not asleep?
He didn’t have to wonder for long.
Half an hour later, the silence of the courtyard broke beneath the low purr of an engine. A jet-black Maybach rolled to a stop at the side of the garden.
The man who had gone out at midnight stepped down, removing his coat as he headed upstairs toward the bedroom.
He was a creature of habits, and his fastidiousness was well known. His intention was to shower again before bed, as he always did. But halfway through shrugging off his coat, he stopped in his tracks.
Three-thirty in the morning.
Yan He found himself staring directly at the little ghost pressed against his bedroom door.
“…”
For a moment, he froze. Then, as if nothing had happened, he continued calmly peeling off his coat.
But the little ghost leapt down and began circling him, eyes widening at once.
Mu Bai felt as though lightning had struck him. His legs nearly gave way.
Because clinging to his target, he caught the scent of another ghost.
This man! This man had gone out in the middle of the night to find another ghost.
Mu Bai’s mind thundered. The truth landed like a blow: at three-thirty in the morning, his new target hadn’t been sleeping, he had been with someone else.
Yan He, for his part, couldn’t make sense of why the little ghost suddenly looked stricken, his gaze locked on him with heartbreaking despair.
After a pause, he slipped his coat back on.
The little ghost still stared as if devastated by betrayal. Yan He hesitated again, then deliberately removed the coat and hung it aside.
Not even two minutes passed before Mu Bai floated anxiously to the coat, nose twitching as he sniffed it over and over.
His brow furrowed deeply, his nose flaring, pale cheeks puffed tight with indignation. He looked for all the world like a little cat baring its teeth.
Mu Bai’s heart seethed.
Where had this other ghost come from?
To sneak in while he was gone in the second half of the night, to steal his person away?
He himself never dared to pin the man beneath him all night long, fearing he might cause harm. And yet some nameless interloper had taken advantage of his absence to slip in.
Yan He watched the ghost circle his coat again and again, bristling with fury.
The last time he’d seen Mu Bai this angry had been when some unlucky spirit had insulted him without thought.
Just as Yan He was about to examine his coat for whatever had caused such a reaction, the little ghost bolted for the window and vanished.
By four o’clock, Mu Bai was storming through the night sky, the rhino horn tip clutched in his sleeve. His fury burned hot enough to light the wind itself.
He landed in the cemetery with a thump. The water ghost was still counting incense offerings when Mu Bai marched over, pulled the rhino horn tip from his pocket, shoved it into A-Sheng’s hands, and declared he was about to pull off something big.
“…?” A-Sheng blinked in confusion.
Mu Bai fixed him with an intense stare. “A-Sheng.”
“In the struggle between kings and losers, only one ghost can remain in that house.”
He drew a deep, solemn breath. “Wait here. If I win, we’ll go soak in the great pool together.”
“And if I lose…” Mu Bai faltered, lips pressed tight before forcing the words out. “If I lose… I’ll come back for you.”
Two against one. He refused to believe he couldn’t defeat that sneaky little intruder.
A-Sheng didn’t understand, but he nodded anyway. He was just opening his mouth to reply when Mu Bai shot off like a streak of fire, racing back toward the villa.
Terrified that he might arrive too late and allow that unknown little ghost to sneak in again, the small ghost rushed back at once.
It was already past four in the morning when he slipped into the villa. He carefully inspected every corner, sniffing the air as he circled the entire place.
Only when he confirmed that there was no trace of another ghost’s presence did he finally breathe a sigh of relief.
The bedroom was already dark and quiet, the lamps extinguished. Yet the little ghost dared not rest even for a moment.
He climbed onto the bed, crossed his legs, and sat upright with vigilance, his eyes darting around the room as though prepared to pounce on any intruder that might dare sneak inside.
By six o’clock in the morning, the yin energy that blanketed the world during the night had begun to dissolve in the pale light of dawn. Thin strands of sunlight trickled out from the breaks in the clouds, slowly chasing away the night.
Inside the dim bedroom, the alarm clock rang out twice before a long, slender hand silenced it. On the pale gray bed, the man sat up.
Yan He was dressed in black sleepwear. His left hand rubbed against his neck as he tilted his head from side to side, trying to loosen his muscles. His messy bangs fell against his brow, shadowing his sharp features.
Rising from the bed, he walked toward the wardrobe, intending to change into gym clothes. But the moment he pulled the door open, he froze.
There, in the middle of his wardrobe, sat the black-haired little ghost, cross-legged atop a pile of expensive suits. His head was resting against the sleeve of Yan He’s tailored jacket, his expression deadly solemn.
Yan He instinctively cast a glance at the clock on the wall. Six-thirty in the morning. The time was correct.
So why was this little ghost sitting inside his wardrobe at such an hour?
The ghost, sitting stiffly among the clothes, shifted slightly the moment the wardrobe opened. He shuffled backward, moving deeper into the shadows.
Wardrobes and the space beneath beds were the places in a house where yin energy lingered most heavily in daylight.
As long as they avoided direct contact with the sun, ghosts like him could continue to hide in such dark places even during the day.
By all logic, a bed-pressing ghost like him should have chosen to hide beneath the bed during daylight hours.
Yet Mu Bai felt differently. If another ghost truly tried to sneak in while he was hiding under the bed, then the way he would crawl out would lack impact, not nearly menacing enough to scare off the intruder.
For that reason, he had chosen to guard his new target from inside the wardrobe instead.
Yan He stood stunned for a moment, the shaft of sunlight from the window spilling into the room. Only after a pause did he move decisively toward the curtains and tug them shut, plunging the bedroom back into semi-darkness.
Then he turned his head to glance again at the wardrobe.
Inside, the little ghost was still as solemn as before, but this time his backside had shifted back into place, right onto one of Yan He’s custom-made shirts worth tens of thousands.
Mu Bai, completely oblivious to the fact that he was sitting on a shirt that cost more than most people earned in a month and that the top of his head was pressed against a jacket worth just as much, simply burrowed deeper into the clothes.
Only his head poked out, eyes sharp and determined, his hair sticking up messily from where Yan He had brushed past.
For the entire day, Mu Bai remained crouched inside the wardrobe, watching, listening, guarding with unshakable determination as he waited for the mysterious intruder to show itself.
But after a whole day of vigilant watch, he discovered nothing.
When night fell, Yan He returned home earlier than usual. He looked to be in an unusually good mood.
Mu Bai slipped out of the wardrobe, circling around Yan He’s coat like a patrolling guard. He sniffed carefully, confirming that there was no trace of another ghost on the man’s clothing. Relieved, he finally allowed his taut nerves to ease.
That night, he sprawled across Yan He’s back, yawning again and again. Sleep tugged heavily at him, and though he nearly dozed off, he remained vigilant, keeping his eyes half open, always alert for any sign of another ghost.
And so time crept toward three in the morning.
Fighting against the crushing weight of sleep, Mu Bai sat cross-legged at the head of the bed, forcing his eyes wide open as he waited for the intruder he was certain would try to sneak in again.
Coincidentally, Yan He’s body clock had adjusted in recent days so that he often awoke around the same time.
As soon as he opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was the little ghost sitting at the end of his bed, his face taut with grim seriousness, his small arms folded tightly across his chest.
The moment Yan He’s eyes opened, Mu Bai’s sharp gaze snapped to him.
The two locked eyes in silence.
Yan He: “…”
With no other choice, Yan He forced himself to act naturally, rising from bed as though simply going to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Mu Bai sat unmoving on the bed, watching him carefully until, all of a sudden, a familiar scent wafted in from the living room.
It was the very same scent he had detected on Yan He’s jacket the night before.
His heart jolted. The intruding ghost had indeed returned, sneaking around under the cover of night!
The little ghost immediately shot upright, his body trembling with energy. With a bold, defiant cry, he charged toward the living room, his speed swift as lightning, ready to strike before the other could react.
And then he froze in place.
In the middle of the living room stood a terrifying figure with a green face and sharp, jagged fangs. The intruder wasn’t some harmless wandering soul, it was an evil ghost.
Mu Bai: “!!!!”
An evil ghost could harm humans, but worse, it could devour smaller ghosts like him to strengthen itself. Ten of his kind would not even fill the teeth of the creature before him.
The small ghost’s expression changed instantly. Without hesitation, he turned on his heel and bolted back toward the bedroom at full speed.
Yan He, who had just stepped out of the bathroom, was about to turn the doorknob when he saw the little ghost hurtling toward him as though fleeing for his life.
At that critical moment of life and death, Mu Bai leapt onto Yan He’s shoulder, scrambling up until he was practically riding on the man’s head.
In his panic, he still found the presence of mind to grab hold of Yan He’s hair, tugging furiously as though urging him to run as well.
Yan He, dragged into a stumble by the ghost clinging to his head: “…”
The evil ghost, who had waited all night but failed to lure anyone out and had finally come inside in desperation, only to see the small ghost now hiding atop the human’s head: “…”
