After finishing breakfast, Wen Ming drove Liang Ling to the company. Along the way, he handed him a document bag and said calmly, “That app project I mentioned to you earlier will be handed over this week. Can you handle it?”
Liang Ling quickly flipped through the thick stack of documents, feeling his eyes glaze over. But since he had already boasted, how could he take it back now? Putting on a brave face, he smiled and said, “Of course! President Wen, you can rest assured.”
Watching his stubborn facade through the rearview mirror, the corners of Wen Ming’s mouth curved up slightly.
“If there is anything you don’t understand or don’t know how to do, remember to come and ask me. Do not shoulder it all by yourself.”
His tone was gentle, sounding very much like an old father caring for his child. Liang Ling froze, his cheeks turning slightly red as he hugged the document bag and whispered, “I know.”
The car quickly pulled up in front of Mingqi Tower. Wen Ming checked his watch. It was almost time for his scheduled phantom training session with Ye Wanqing. He turned his head and smiled at Liang Ling. “I have some matters to take care of. Take the elevator up to the fourth floor; the doctor is already waiting for you there.”
Liang Ling was somewhat surprised. Wen Ming was a notorious workaholic, and in the past, he always insisted on organizing meetings with various levels of leadership in the office around this time of noon. Why had he changed his tune today?
Sensing his confusion, Wen Ming chuckled, slipped his hand into his trench coat pocket, and said with a deliberately casual air, “What, as a CEO, must I personally handle everything without ever resting? You cannot drive a donkey from the production team this hard!”
Amused by his analogy, Liang Ling nodded in deep agreement. “Indeed. President Wen, you really haven’t rested in a long time. Don’t worry, Secretary Yang will let me know if anything comes up, and I will report back to you.”
Wen Ming gave a slight nod, pointed toward the elevator that had already arrived, and smiled, “Go ahead. Good luck with your checkup.”
Liang Ling waved at him, squeezed into the elevator with the crowd, and pressed against the glass window to watch him drive away.
“Hey, you’re Liang Ling, right?” A voice suddenly called out from behind him. Liang Ling turned around to see Dou Zhao, the director of the marketing department.
Dou Zhao was quite a veteran at Mingqi, having brought up quite a few newcomers under his wing. This newly launched app should have naturally been his responsibility, but a few days ago, President Wen suddenly changed the plan and appointed Liang Ling as the project lead, instantly overshadowing Dou Zhao and his team.
Liang Ling hurriedly bowed to him. “Director Dou.”
Patting his middle-aged protruding belly and tidying up the sparse hairs on his head, Dou Zhao looked at him with a smile, “Don’t be so polite. From now on, we are good comrades in the same trench. By the way, when are you going to hold a meeting? I’ll have my people brief you on the project since you jumped in midway and surely don’t know a lot of details.”
Liang Ling scratched his head awkwardly, clutching the document bag tighter. “Let’s make it this afternoon. I’ll head up to the fourth floor for my checkup first, and then I’ll come right over.”
Hearing this, Dou Zhao’s expression immediately turned meaningful. He nodded with a smile, “Alright, let’s say 3:30 then. I’ll go check in with the production engineering department in the meantime. The app is likely going into internal testing in the next couple of days, so we really can’t afford to be careless.”
Liang Ling nodded along hurriedly. “Alright, thank you for your hard work, Director Dou.”
“Ding!” The elevator finally stopped on the fourth floor. Liang Ling practically fled out of it like lightning, leaving behind several cold figures staring after him.
Phew, this is so miserable. I have to start working on it without knowing anything. Liang Ling thought, feeling disheartened while following the address the doctor had sent to his phone. 403. Oh, right here.
The moment he thought about facing a doctor, Liang Ling immediately began to grow nervous. He swallowed hard and tapped gently on the door twice.
“Is anyone inside?”
The door opened immediately, revealing a kind and amiable smiling face. “Oh, you must be Mr. Liang! Hello, I am Wen Ming’s personal physician, Zheng Xiaoran.”
Liang Ling was quite surprised. Given Wen Ming’s personality, he had always assumed the CEO’s personal doctor would be an unsmiling, gray-templed old academic. Instead, Zheng Xiaoran looked around the same age as him and appeared exceptionally lively and cheerful.
Seeing him standing there frozen in place, Zheng Xiaoran shrugged with a hint of amusement and smiled, “What’s wrong, Mr. Liang? Come in! Science has certainly advanced nowadays, but it hasn’t reached the point where you can get a checkup standing outside the door.”
His remark cracked Liang Ling up, sweeping away the previous gloom and making him feel much more relaxed. He walked in, sat down on a stool, and looked obediently at Zheng Xiaoran.
“Hello, Doctor. I’m here for a checkup.”
Zheng Xiaoran plopped down onto a stool, pulled down his glasses to take a look at him, and tilted his head. “Aigoo, I know all about it! President Wen sent you over for a checkup, didn’t he? Said that whenever you get excited, you run a fever and insist on him holding you to sleep. Ah, not to sound preachy, but for a young man, that counts as an illness, you know! You’ve got to treat it early, otherwise what’s going to happen to your lifelong happiness?”
Realizing that a doctor could be so utterly unserious, Liang Ling blushed immediately and lowered his head shyly.
This is so mortifying…
Zheng Xiaoran chuckled and patted his shoulder. “Don’t worry, there’s no shame in seeing a doctor! Come on, lie down, and I’ll take a CT scan first to check if there are any issues with your prostate.”
Hearing that, Liang Ling nearly lost his mind. His jaw dropped in shock, and he instinctively covered his dignity with his hands. “Ah, do we really have to check that?”
