Su Ni had spent two peaceful days at the Su family home. Early this morning, she was woken up before dawn and treated like a dress-up doll, with a group of servants fussing over her—doing her makeup, trying on clothes, and changing her outfit again and again.
Looking at the row of gorgeous dresses in front of her, Su Ni could tell just how much importance the Su family placed on the Huo family’s banquet this time.
If that was the case, she was even more eager to see the disappointment on the faces of the Su family.
“All you need to do today is stay obediently by your mother’s side. If I find out that you said anything you shouldn’t have, you know what the consequences will be.” Su Zhengguo was still uneasy, so he warned Su Ni again before leaving.
Su Ni merely glanced at him without saying a word. She had her own reasons for going to the Huo family’s banquet today.
As they spoke, Su Mengyao slowly came downstairs. Compared with Su Ni, she was dressed to the nines.
She wore a pink off-the-shoulder evening gown with a floor-length train, adorned with countless sparkling diamonds. Under the lights, they glittered brilliantly, making her look like a princess straight out of a fairy tale.
Su Ni blinked strangely. Wasn’t Su Mengyao supposedly uninterested in marrying into the Huo family? Then what was the point of putting on such a show today?
Su Ni soon got her answer.
The moment they got out of the car, Su Mengyao rushed forward like a colorful butterfly.
“Minghui, big brother!”
Not far away stood a man in a white suit. He was tall and well-built, with handsome features.
Based on the information Su Ni had gathered about the Huo family, he was the Huo family’s adopted son, Huo Minghui.
Apparently, the Huo family’s matriarch was very fond of her adopted son and treated him almost like her own biological son.
When Huo Minghui saw Su Mengyao, a faint smile appeared on his face.
“Mengyao, you’re here.”
Su Mengyao quickly walked over to him, and the two began chatting happily.
Watching Su Mengyao’s behavior, Su Ni immediately understood what she was thinking.
Madam Huo had only one biological son, Huo Shiyue. Although Huo Minghui was an adopted son, he was still recognized by Mrs. Huo as the Huo family’s second young master. While Huo Shiyue had been bedridden, she had even advocated handing the Huo Group over to him to manage.
If Huo Shiyue really didn’t make it through this ordeal, Huo Minghui would very likely become the Huo family’s sole heir.
The Su family really had played their cards well.
Su Ni followed Mrs. Su into the banquet hall. The guests inside were dressed in splendid attire, smiling and chatting amiably. The sounds of conversation and clinking glasses blended into a lively din.
Mrs. Su was an expert at socializing, effortlessly chatting with the wealthy wives around her. She had absolutely no intention of introducing Su Ni.
Those women exchanged knowing glances and tacitly chose not to ask.
But the way they looked at Su Ni made her extremely uncomfortable.
Su Ni couldn’t be bothered to entertain these people. She was already thinking about how to slip away. She needed to see Huo Shiyue’s condition with her own eyes before deciding what to do next.
While Mrs. Su wasn’t paying attention, Su Ni slowed her pace and deliberately fell behind.
By the time Mrs. Su realized what had happened, Su Ni was nowhere to be seen in the banquet hall.
Mrs. Su called Su Jingheng over.
“Hurry up and find that wild girl, Su Ni, and bring her back. Don’t let her embarrass me here.”
Su Jingheng had been happily chatting with several company executives, but Su Ni’s disappearance immediately stirred up an inexplicable anger in him.
Meanwhile, Su Ni had already changed out of the cumbersome dress. She casually found one of the Huo family’s servants and, using her own methods, obtained the exact location of Huo Shiyue’s room.
She snapped her fingers.
The servant in front of her immediately came to his senses. He looked at Su Ni in confusion.
“Miss, would you like something to drink?”
Su Ni shook her head and declined, then turned and walked outside.
She knew that a place like the Huo residence would certainly be equipped with surveillance cameras and guards everywhere. There was no way she could meet Huo Shiyue by conventional means.
A short while later, Su Ni climbed through a window and dropped lightly into the room.
The room was decorated in an exceptionally understated style, with dark tones that gave it a quiet, solemn atmosphere. A few potted green plants sat beside the bed, adding a touch of life to the otherwise somewhat chilly space.
Her gaze slowly shifted toward the bed.
Someone was lying there.
It had to be Huo Shiyue.
