They returned to City A that very night.

That night, every servant in the villa trembled with fear. Even Liao An, who had gone home for the New Year and rushed back, wore a deep frown, at a complete loss.

Inside the bedroom, it felt like a war was taking place. There were angry curses, restrained moans and faint, stifled sobs. By the end, even those sounds seemed to fade, leaving only the vague, barely audible echo of heavy breathing.Full novel: When a Straight Guy Transmigrates into an Alpha, He Can Get Pregnant — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Liao An let out a long sigh, his face tense as he ordered everyone to go to sleep.

Nothing should happen tonight… right? he thought.

Before returning to his own room, he cast a few more deep, lingering glances toward the direction of the bedroom, then went in and called Xing Mingyuan to report the situation.

The gunshot came a little after five in the morning, just as the sky was beginning to lighten.

It rang out without warning, shattering the stillness of the villa.

Liao An was the first to rush out of his room. He had been on edge all night, his nerves stretched taut and when he heard the shot, his legs nearly gave out beneath him as he ran toward Xing Hui’s bedroom. He was moving so fast he almost stumbled and fell.

The other servants, who had been asleep, all woke as well. They gathered in the living room, standing there in fearful silence, staring toward the bedroom.

“Call a doctor!” Xing Hui’s voice came from inside. “Uncle An! Call a doctor, quickly!”

As his words fell, the bedroom door opened.

There was a large patch of blood on Xing Hui’s arm. Liao An’s eyes widened in shock. “Young Master! You’re injured!”

“I’m fine. Call the doctor,” Xing Hui said. “And get He Chuan here too!”

He Chuan and Song Yu arrived together. When they got there, both were startled.

Seeing Xing Hui’s arm wrapped in bandages, clearly not lightly injured, they couldn’t help but ask, “You’re hurt? What about him?”

“Him…” Xing Hui felt a sudden stab in his chest, followed by a wave of lingering fear he couldn’t suppress. The image of You Miao holding a gun to kill himself flashed in his mind. He took a breath before managing to say, “He tried to kill himself.”

“What?” Both of them were equally shocked.

Xing Hui had forced himself on You Miao through the night. Before dawn, You Miao had taken a gun and attempted suicide. Xing Hui had stopped him in time but the shot had gone off and injured Xing Hui instead, the bullet grazing his arm.

You Miao’s emotions had been far too unstable and in the end, Xing Hui had no choice but to knock him unconscious again.

This New Year’s Eve was the most unbearable one in Xing Hui’s twenty two years of life.

The last time he had felt this miserable was the Spring Festival when his mother left.

Xing Mingyuan, worried about Xing Hui and also concerned for the child Xing Hui had taken away, came to City A to spend the New Year.

This New Year left him so exasperated by his own son that he felt he might lose a few years of his life but seeing Xing Hui in such a dispirited, hollow state, he couldn’t bring himself to say anything harsh, especially during the holiday.

What had happened between them was kept from all relatives and friends but He Chuan and Song Yu still called Shen Heng, Qi Huai and Yu Jiming over.

Xing Hui’s condition was terrible. They were afraid that the one lying in the room might start another confrontation with him. With them around, perhaps both sides could calm down a little.

“What are you doing? Can’t you just let him go?” Shen Heng was truly at a loss for words with Xing Hui. “He already tried to kill himself.”

“I’m telling you, it’s not that I won’t let him go, it’s that I can’t bear the thought of him being anywhere I can’t see!” Xing Hui was on the verge of losing his mind, utterly worn down. “If I can’t see him for even a moment, I’ll go insane. I’m scared! Do you understand?”

Shen Heng didn’t understand. He hadn’t expected Xing Hui to be this serious. After all the turmoil over the past half year, he still hadn’t gotten him, was this some kind of obsession with wanting what he couldn’t have? He sighed. “You really like him?”

Xing Hui lowered his head, silent and heavy.

“A forced melon isn’t sweet,” Shen Heng added, trying to persuade him. “You can have anyone you want.”

“Exactly,” Qi Huai frowned. “And he’s an alpha. Don’t your pheromones clash? Wouldn’t even kissing make you nauseous?”

Xing Hui didn’t like hearing that at all and shot him a glare.

Yu Jiming clicked his tongue and nudged Qi Huai with his leg. “If you don’t know how to talk, then don’t.”

Qi Huai fell silent. He simply couldn’t understand this kind of desperate, life or death love Xing Hui seemed to have.

Song Yu spoke up, “You could find a beta. Like He Chuan and me, there’s no issue of rejection.”

Xing Hui grew irritated. “Stop trying to persuade me. I only want him. I’ll spend my whole life on him if I have to.”

“He’s not even a good person,” Shen Heng muttered under his breath.

Xing Hui disliked that even more. “I’m willing, alright?” Then, almost collapsing, he said, “Why are you all here? Just to rub salt in my wounds?”

“Calm down. Don’t let your wound split open,” Qi Huai reminded him.

Xing Hui didn’t care about his injury at all. He stood up, intending to go into the bedroom to see You Miao.

At that moment, He Chuan came out of the bedroom and stopped him. “What are you doing? Go, go, don’t go in. He doesn’t want to see you.”

Xing Hui immediately looked like he was about to devour someone. There was hurt in his expression but his steps halted. “He’s awake?”

“He’s been awake for a while,” He Chuan said, closing the bedroom door behind him, then gesturing for Xing Hui to sit on the sofa.

“How is he? What did he say?” Xing Hui asked urgently.

He Chuan sighed. “His emotions have stabilized. He only has one request, you let him go.”

Xing Hui’s eyes reddened instantly, though he forced himself to sound angry. “No!”

He looked toward the bedroom, something resolute flaring in his dark pupils, a determination to keep You Miao bound to his side for the rest of his life.

“I’m going to keep him with me,” he said, watching, guarding.

He Chuan’s brows immediately knitted together.

He was about to say something when he saw Xing Hui heading toward the bedroom again and quickly grabbed him. “What are you doing now? He’s still lying in bed and your arm is injured too. Doesn’t it hurt? Can you just settle down for a bit? Let him have some space, alright? Right now, the moment he sees you, he reacts like a startled rabbit. If you keep this up, sooner or later you’ll scare him into something worse.”

“What if he tries to kill himself again while he’s alone in the room?” Xing Hui sounded almost possessed. “I have to watch him.”

He Chuan opened his mouth several times, unsure how to continue persuading him. In the end, he said helplessly, “Honestly, I give up on you. Fine, do whatever you want. I’m just worried that if you go in, his emotions will get unstable again.”

Xing Hui knew that too but he couldn’t feel at ease leaving You Miao alone.

“All dangerous items have been removed from the room, haven’t they? It should be fine,” Yu Jiming said.

“But what if he hangs himself?” Shen Heng suddenly added.

Xing Hui’s breathing faltered. He nearly couldn’t catch his breath. The group of them all rushed toward the bedroom at once.

Xing Hui was the first to push the door open, the others crowding at the doorway right after.

You Miao was sitting propped up against the headboard. He seemed to tremble slightly, so faint it was almost imperceptible. The moment he saw Xing Hui, he turned his face away in clear aversion.

Seeing that he was fine, all of them let out a breath of relief.

At this point, they knew it wasn’t their place to interfere further. No matter what, this was between the two of them. One by one, they withdrew from the room.

Only Xing Hui and You Miao remained.

The room fell silent. Neither spoke. Neither moved.

Tonight was New Year’s Eve.

Fireworks and firecrackers sounded outside. You Miao looked out the window. Suddenly, his nose stung and tears burst forth uncontrollably.

Seeing him cry, Xing Hui wished he could slap himself. He stepped forward anxiously, apologizing, trying to make up for things as he reached out to wipe away his tears.

“Get away! Don’t touch me!” You Miao snapped, crying fiercely, his tone just as sharp.

Xing Hui awkwardly withdrew his hand. His gaze was filled with both pain and tenderness. He couldn’t bear to look at You Miao’s tear filled eyes, so his gaze dropped instead to You Miao’s collarbone.

Beneath the loosely hanging sleepwear, from his neck to his collarbone and down to his chest, there were marks, ambiguous, unmistakable marks, left by him.

You Miao was still sobbing, looking pitiful in a way that made him seem unbearably fragile.

Xing Hui hesitated before speaking. “…Stop crying.” He picked up tissues from the bedside table and offered them to him.

You Miao ignored him. Lowering his eyelashes, he sniffed softly. After that irrational act earlier, he felt oddly relieved, as if the shot he had fired had struck straight into his own chest, bang and all the long standing blockage inside him had suddenly cleared.

He would not try to kill himself again.

He refused to destroy his life because of someone else’s wrongdoing.

If anyone was going to die, it should be the person in front of him. You Miao thought bitterly.

Why hadn’t that shot killed him? he added viciously in his mind.

Xing Hui watched him cautiously. In truth, his entire body felt terrible, especially his injured arm, which throbbed with pain. He really wanted to lie down beside You Miao and get some proper rest.

But he could only think about it.

Gradually, the sounds of fireworks and firecrackers faded. Occasionally, one or two would go off in the distance, adding faint noise to the quiet.

Midnight had already passed. The night had grown deep.

The two of them remained like that, stiff and unmoving, neither speaking.

No one knew how much time had passed before Xing Hui finally broke the silence. “It’s late. Let’s go to sleep.”

The words let’s go to sleep made You Miao’s face twist. He glared at Xing Hui, his expression shifting several times, from anger, to calm and finally to disgust.

Seeing that expression, Xing Hui immediately knew he had misunderstood again. So he said, “I’m not some animal, thinking about that kind of thing all day.”

“You are an animal,” You Miao replied coldly.

Xing Hui choked on his words. He opened his mouth but in the end, he couldn’t bring himself to say anything in rebuttal. He only let out a deflated sigh.

Silence fell between them once more.

A long, suffocating silence.

Xing Hui felt as though he were being tortured inside. Finally, unable to bear it, he spoke again. “Are you hungry? We haven’t even had our New Year’s Eve dinner yet.”

At the mention of the New Year’s Eve dinner, You Miao’s eyes grew hot again. He raised a hand to wipe his tears.

Xing Hui frowned, watching him for a moment before asking, “Do you miss home?”

From what he had investigated, Zhou You was an orphan with no parents. There were a few distant relatives but they barely kept in touch. As for those so called friends, they were hardly worth mentioning.

He asked only to make conversation. He knew full well that those tears were because of him.

But that single question only made You Miao cry even harder. It was as if something long suppressed had finally broken free. He could no longer hold it in and he began to sob openly.

Xing Hui panicked, completely at a loss. He wanted to step forward and hold him but he didn’t dare, afraid of provoking more disgust yet listening to You Miao’s crying felt like a sharp blade stabbing into his heart, hurting far more than the wound on his arm ever could.

You Miao cried until he was gasping for breath, his head spinning, his mind buzzing. Then, catching sight of Xing Hui’s expression, like the sky had collapsed and the world was ending, he felt nothing but irritation.

With a look of distaste, he lay down, turned over and faced away from him, continuing to shed silent, stifled tears.

Xing Hui’s heart felt unbearably bitter, unbearably restless. He was angry at himself and angry at You Miao, the emotions tangling together until he couldn’t sort them out. Sitting there, he ended up wiping his own tears as well.

That night, both of them fell asleep crying.

On the large bed, each took one side, with enough space between them to fit two more people.

With a few of his childhood friends there, Xing Mingyuan felt somewhat reassured but as a parent, he simply couldn’t sleep.

After the younger ones had all gone to bed, he quietly checked on them three times throughout the night. Seeing the two of them, each lying on opposite sides, their pillows soaked with tears, their faces blotched from crying like children, he frowned deeply and let out sigh after sigh.

A grown son was no longer under his control yet this situation was even more difficult for him as a father than going to war.

That night, Xing Mingyuan thought of Xing Hui’s mother. He missed her terribly.

On the morning of the first day of the New Year, after finishing dumplings, Shen Heng and the others all went home to pay New Year visits. Xing Mingyuan also left. Given his status, there were far too many people who wanted to visit him to offer New Year greetings.

He declined them all but there were still a few old comrades he had to meet. More importantly, he needed to visit his wife.

Before leaving, Xing Mingyuan went to the bedroom again. Both children were still lying there, eyes closed, whether truly asleep or pretending, he couldn’t tell.

He sighed softly, gave Liao An a few instructions and left, taking Liangliang and Huahua with him.

Xing Mingyuan went first to the cemetery, a vast martyrs’ memorial park. His beloved was buried there. Everything the Xing family had today had been paid for with her life.

“I’ve raised Huihui poorly. I don’t even have the face to see you,” he said, his voice tinged with bitterness. “That child, why is he so stubborn? Once he sets his mind on something, even if he crashes into a wall and ends up battered and bleeding, he won’t turn back. Is he like you or like me?” He gave a faint laugh. “Like you. Too much like you.”

On the gravestone was a young, handsome omega man in military uniform, smiling gently.

As Xing Mingyuan looked on, his eyes grew wet. He raised a hand to wipe them but the more he wiped, the more tears came, until he simply stopped and let himself cry freely.

Xing Hui had actually woken up early. His sleep had been restless, his arm hurt terribly, his head ached as if he had a fever and his entire body felt sore. Lying there, he didn’t want to move.

His eyes remained fixed on You Miao, who was lying nearby. After confirming he was safe, he closed his eyes again, intending to sleep a little longer.

But the moment he closed them, he heard movement beside him. You Miao was getting up.

Xing Hui opened his eyes immediately and sat up as well.

You Miao didn’t look at him, didn’t acknowledge him. With cold indifference, he got out of bed and walked out of the bedroom.

Xing Hui followed, uneasy. You Miao went to the bathroom, washed up, then headed to the kitchen to ask if there were any dumplings left for the first day of the New Year.

Xing Hui felt a flicker of secret joy. He shamelessly stepped forward, trying to start a conversation. “You want dumplings?”

You Miao ignored him completely, not even sparing him a glance.

The kitchen staff quickly prepared boiled dumplings. When the steaming bowl was placed on the table, You Miao sat down and began to eat.

During this time, he even went over to Liao An and said something, “Happy New Year.”

Liao An was flattered and pleasantly surprised. He turned to share the moment with Xing Hui but the moment he saw Xing Hui’s expression, he swallowed his words and quietly walked away.

After washing up, Xing Hui dragged his injured arm and sat across from You Miao. He had deliberately chosen that seat, one where You Miao would see his arm the moment he looked up.

But through the entire meal, You Miao never once glanced at him. The act of playing the victim had no effect.

It was the same at lunch.

And it was still the same by evening.

Xing Hui was deeply dissatisfied but he forced himself not to lash out. On top of that, he felt increasingly dizzy, so much so that once he sat down, he didn’t want to get up again. His energy was low, he was certain now that he had a fever.

He stood up, intending to check his temperature and take some medicine but the moment he rose, a wave of dizziness hit him. His vision went black and he collapsed unconscious onto the floor.

When he regained some awareness, he vaguely heard voices, You Miao speaking to someone.

Xing Hui’s fever had reached forty degrees, caused by the wound. The moment he collapsed, You Miao, acting on instinct as a medical student, rushed over to help him. He immediately had Xing Hui sent to the hospital.

At the hospital, Xing Hui’s fever subsided and he was put on an IV drip. After briefly speaking with the doctor, You Miao prepared to leave.

At that moment, Xing Hui woke up. He looked at him weakly, confirming it wasn’t a dream before speaking in a hoarse voice, “Zhou You… is that really you?”

You Miao didn’t answer. He simply looked at him.

Xing Hui tried to sit up but the movement tugged at the wound on his arm, making him suck in a breath of pain. Looking at him pitifully, he said, “I want to sit up. Zhou You, help me, will you?”

You Miao remained expressionless and called the nurse.

“….” Xing Hui was helped up by the young nurse. After a moment of silence, he tried again, playing the victim. “Zhou You, I’m thirsty. With such a high fever, I need to drink more water. Can you pour me a glass?”

You Miao called the nurse again.

This was a VIP ward in a military hospital. Given Xing Hui’s identity, he was a priority patient.

The nurse poured water for him. Xing Hui’s face darkened completely. This time, he behaved.

Ignoring his attempts to hold him back, You Miao returned home to sleep.

Liao An approached him with two red envelopes, one from himself, one from the Commander.

“Happy New Year, Mr. Zhou,” he said kindly. “You’re still young. You should have New Year’s money.”

The sincerity was unmistakable and You Miao could feel it but he didn’t know how to respond. After a long silence, he said, “You’re an elder… you can call me Xiao You from now on.”

Liao An smiled warmly. “Xiao You.”

You Miao forced a faint smile, accepted the envelopes and went into the bedroom. He placed them on the bedside table on Xing Hui’s side of the bed.

Xing Hui stayed in the hospital for three days before running back home. If You Miao didn’t go to see him, he grew anxious just from not seeing him.

No one could stop him. He continued receiving IV treatment at home for several more days.

There was, however, one thing that secretly pleased him, the needles were removed by You Miao himself. He would even take the opportunity to complain about arm pain.

Once, he deliberately reopened the wound, letting it bleed quite a bit and You Miao had to stop the bleeding and bandage it.

Seeing through him, You Miao said coldly, “If you want to die, do it somewhere far away. Don’t cause trouble for others.”

Xing Hui smiled. “If I die, you’ll be left a widow.”

You Miao glared at him, applying a bit more force with his hands. Xing Hui cried out, sweating from the pain.

On the Lantern Festival, Xing Hui had his stitches removed. Shen Heng and the others had wanted to visit but he refused.

There was finally a slight shift in his relationship with You Miao and he wanted to savor it. He didn’t want anyone interfering.

That evening, he personally made black sesame tangyuan and had the kitchen prepare several dishes to celebrate together.

You Miao didn’t look happy, nor did he look unhappy. He always carried that distant, indifferent expression, as if there were an invisible barrier between him and Xing Hui and everyone else and the entire world.

But because the festival here was the same as in his hometown, You Miao didn’t refuse the tangyuan Xing Hui had made.

Black sesame filling, his favorite.

On a clear day in early spring, Xing Hui returned home and handed You Miao a new phone.

When You Miao turned it on, he discovered several saved numbers, Zhou Zhaosheng, Uncle Zhou and Aunt Zhou, Xiao Xin, Brother Chen, Sister Xu… even Fang Xinyu. There was even Du Huailin, whom he had met during his hospital stay.

Xing Hui said, “Zhou Zhaosheng’s money has been repaid and the three hundred thousand your old flame owed? That’s been repaid too.” His tone turned especially sour at the last sentence, almost as if he were gritting his teeth.

Holding the phone, You Miao frowned slightly. So Fang Xinyu and Zhou You had been in a relationship?

Seeing that You Miao wasn’t responding, Xing Hui frowned and emphasized, as if seeking credit, “I got all their numbers for you and saved them. I even sent people to repay the debts and told them about your situation. You can contact them anytime.”

At last, You Miao looked up at him. After a long pause, he spoke with difficulty, “I understand.”

Xing Hui pursed his lips. Seeing that You Miao’s attention had already returned to the phone, he added, “But you can’t contact them every day. I won’t allow it.”

You Miao frowned slightly but said nothing.

That spring, Xing Hui filled the study with a large number of medical books. From the way You Miao skillfully handled injections, removed needles and dressed wounds, he could tell he had professional knowledge.

He had investigated before but the results showed that Zhou You had no background in medicine whatsoever.

Yet the person before him clearly did. When he had tentatively asked, the answer he got was simply that he was interested.

So Xing Hui bought many medical books and various instructional videos, even purchasing a laptop for You Miao.

He did many things, anything that might make You Miao happy, even if it was just to make him smile once.

But You Miao remained distant, never smiling at him. He began spending more time in the study than in the bedroom and the person he talked to most on the phone was Du Huailin.

In the end, Xing Hui could no longer endure it. Losing his composure, he warned, “If you keep chatting with him like this, I’ll make sure he can’t continue his graduate studies.”

This became their first serious conflict since the argument during the New Year.

There was another source of tension as well, what happened in bed.

Since that incident, Xing Hui had not touched him even once. During their susceptible periods, they relied entirely on suppressants.

Even outside of those periods, when Xing Hui wanted him so badly he could hardly bear it, he forced himself to endure, either taking cold showers, going outside to smoke, or handling it himself.

That night, Xing Hui couldn’t take it anymore. He pressed close, clinging to him, his voice low and strained. “Xiao You… it’s been more than three months. Can you give me once?” He cautiously reached out, trying to undo You Miao’s clothes.

You Miao slapped his hand away, displeased. “Don’t touch me!” Then he added, “Don’t call me Xiao You!”

“Why can Uncle An call you that but I can’t?” Xing Hui said, leaning in to kiss him.

Yu Miao dodged him, grabbing a pillow to smack him but Xing Hui still managed to get his way, pinning him beneath him and stealing a few urgent kisses.

In the brief space between breaths, Yu Miao shoved him away, turning his face aside to avoid looking at him. His entire face flushed red, as though he were about to erupt in anger.

Xing Hui stared at him with burning eyes, his whole body feverish. That overwhelming urge, wanting yet being denied, tormented him unbearably. Still, afraid that things between them would worsen again, he forced himself to endure it and climbed off the bed.

Half an hour later, he came back rigid and straight backed, his breathing uneven and disordered. He climbed onto the bed again, as though he had lost control of himself, unable to restrain it any longer. Roughly, he pressed Yu Miao down beneath him again.

“Just once, okay?”

Yu Miao resisted. “Get out!” Then added coldly, “Go find an omega to deal with it! Don’t come to me!”

“I only want you!” Xing Hui bent down to kiss him again. “Only you!”

His eyes were bloodshot with desire as he looked at Yu Miao. He truly resembled a beast that had been starved and restrained for far too long, as if in the next second he would devour Yu Miao whole and yet, he was still clenching his teeth, holding himself back.

At some point, he grabbed Yu Miao’s hand and pressed it against himself. His breathing grew heavier instantly, his voice rough and pleading.

“Then… help me out with your hand.”
