A Wolf Falls for a Sheep
by 纤朔尘
On a blizzard night deep in the northern mountains, a lone wolf named Cang Ya pins down a ewe separated from her flock. He should have bitten through her throat in one snap, but instead he brings her back to Black Stone Cliff and pens her in as "live rations" for the winter. A wolf pens a sheep; the sheep hates the wolf. One keeps to his inborn hunter's nature, the other longs for the flock down the mountain. But winter is longer than hatred: snow seals the mountain, prey vanishes, and the wolf ends up digging grass for the sheep, standing night watch, blocking the wind. Later the wolf steps in a hunter's trap, gravely wounded and near death—yet the sheep, who should have fled, turns back and drags him from the gates of hell with herbs and her own body heat. Through one winter they lean on each other across the stone pen; through one spring they learn to cross the river side by side. The wolf gradually forgets his fangs, the sheep slowly forgets her fear. But a wolf is still a pack animal, and a sheep must still return to the world of humans. When the pack from Birch Gully moves south and the old law presses down before them—is the living creature a hunter brings back food, or a life? To protect her, Cang Ya breaks with his pack, fights her out through the wolves, wades the icy river of the spring flood, delivers the lights of Xiawan Village to her eyes—then turns and walks away alone, to hold the One-Line Gorge. He was born a wolf and will die a wolf; only in this one life, he loved a sheep. — Description from novelcodex.org
