The Cold Pawn

During the Zhengde era of the Ming Dynasty, the morally ambiguous protagonist navigates between the Jinyiwei, the Eastern Depot, and the emperor, gaining imperial favor and rising in power. Through contact with virtuous ministers and scholars, he gradually becomes righteous. Over sixteen turbulent years, he evolves from a naive youth into a worldly-wise man, experiencing bitterness, sweetness, and hardship. He encounters bandits, corrupt officials, power struggles, princely rebellions, imperial campaigns, and mysterious family affairs. Despite his efforts to uphold justice, he finds his struggles futile. With the help of a good teacher, loyal friends, and a beloved woman, he steadily advances, eventually retiring to seclusion amid court changes. The story reflects on life as a game of chess. 'The Cold Pawn' is the first of seven volumes, detailing the protagonist's accidental entry into the Jinyiwei as a junior officer, his early career during Emperor Zhengde's reign, and his manipulation by various factions, ultimately becoming a 'cold pawn.'
