Tang Dynasty Military Affairs

Amid the chaos of the late Sui Dynasty, Li Yuan raised an army in Jinyang in 617, declared himself emperor in 618, founded the Tang Dynasty with Chang'an as its capital, and gradually pacified separatist forces, laying the foundation for the Li family's rule. After the establishment of the Tang, conflicts among the princes intensified: Crown Prince Li Jiancheng allied with Prince Li Yuanji against the militarily accomplished Prince Li Shimin, leading to escalating tensions in both court and military affairs. In 626, Li Shimin launched the Xuanwu Gate Incident in Chang'an, killing Li Jiancheng and Li Yuanji. Subsequently, Li Yuan appointed him crown prince and soon abdicated. Li Shimin ascended the throne as Emperor Taizong, ushering in the 'Zhenguan Era' and propelling the early Tang toward stability and prosperity.
