The Riverside

In the remote and impoverished Qingxi Village, young Chen Niansheng, unwilling to be bound by farming, drops out of school to pursue his dream of writing, facing opposition from his family and criticism from the villagers. Amidst hardship, the gentle and resilient Lin Wanxing approaches him, accompanying him through illness and drought, and their hearts grow close in the rural days, pledging to stay together. A chance opportunity arises when Niansheng's distant cousin helps him become a reporter at the county newspaper, setting him on the path to his dreams, promising to return for Wanxing. However, the vanity of the county town and the betrayals in the workplace gradually erode his original intentions, leading him to break his promise and betray Wanxing. After hitting rock bottom and losing everything, he awakens. Returning to the Qingxi riverside, he finds the girl who waited for him for three years, now exhausted by hopeless waiting. Niansheng abandons all vanity, roots himself in the countryside, and spends the rest of his life making amends, protecting Wanxing and his homeland.
